This has been going on for a couple days now and it's really starting to irritate me. I don't play on PSN much, but I want something out of the store really bad at the moment. :(
ANON denies taking out the PSN and Sony refuses to talk (like usual). Sony can't even give an estimate of when they might come back up. Whatever happened, it was bad.
It's been down since Wednesday, very annoying as i just bought Mortal Kombat on Wednesday and it's easter so i actually have time to play now, should have bought the 360 version even though i hate the 360 pad for fighting games :bang2:

It has something to do with ensuring the security once the system is back up. They have to do some testing with it live. At least that is what my wife said she read from Little Big Planet.

From their blog
Latest Update for PSN/Qriocity Services Posted by Patrick Seybold // Sr. Director, Corporate Communications & Social MediaWe sincerely regret that PlayStation Network and Qriocity services have been suspended, and we are working around the clock to bring them both back online.
Our efforts to resolve this matter involve re-building our system to further strengthen our network infrastructure. Though this task is time-consuming, we decided it was worth the time necessary to provide the system with additional security.
We thank you for your patience to date and ask for a little more while we move towards completion of this project. We will continue to give you updates as they become available.

It was a protest for the way that they(Sony) handled the GeoHot jailbreaking. They wanted to punish GeoHot and everyone for downloading it. Sony got tight last couple of years eliminating features in the PS3 like multi-OS. So GeoHot decided to let people choose how they wanted to use it and undo any Sony updates.

What's this "Playstation Plus" I've heard about?
From wikipedia:
PlayStation Plus is a paid PlayStation Network subscription service that was officially unveiled at E3 2010 by Jack Tretton, President and CEO of SCEA. Rumors of such service had been in speculation since Kaz Hirai's announcement at TGS 2009 of a possible paid service for PSN but with the current PSN service still available. Launched alongside PS3 firmware 3.40 and PSP firmware 6.30 on June 29, 2010, the paid-for subscription service provides users with enhanced services on the PlayStation Network, on top of the current PSN service which is still available with all of its features. These enhancements include the ability to have demos, game and system software updates download automatically to the PlayStation 3. Subscribers also get early or exclusive access to some betas, game demos, premium downloadable content and other PlayStation Store items as well as a free subscription to Qore. Users may choose to purchase either a one-year or a three-month subscription to PlayStation Plus.

For now.
Pretty soon, Sony will go pay-to-play.
And if they don't, they'll likely scale back the services on the free side so much that you'll be forced to go to a pay plan.
Actually, I take that back. It may not be soon but I can almost assure you it will happen with the next console.
Both M$ and Sony take a beating on console sales at release. With used games eating into their potential profits, they have to find money in other areas. M$ has it figured out. $60/year from the millions of people who pay it brings in a lot of money.

Let's face it. If someone wants your personal info, they are going to get it no matter what. There hasn't been a security system created yet that can foil the most determined/skilled of cyber criminals. Laugh all you want, but it's the truth. Too many service provider/processors/anyone holding customer personal info or account info have had security breaches with hackers making off with tons of personal data. PSN and XBL are huge targets and have in the past both weathered several attempts. It's only a matter of time before someone is successful.

It looks like PP is trying to be more like XBox Live (although still doesn't have anywhere near the amount of features for almost an identical price) and the regular PSN that is free will remain how it used to be.

No the stupid comment, and the acting cool (not surprised you didn't get this really) was you making a smart *** comment about him being able to read the future, your fortune teller comment, and then turned around in the EXACT SAME POST and did THE EXACT SAME THING with your fortune telling of Xbox eventually having this problem as well.
It wasn't about you liking Sony or not. If you do, good for you, I couldn't care less. It was you being a smart *** about his opinion, and calling him a fortune teller, and then turning around and doing the same thing after you got butt hurt cause some Xbox 'fanboy' prefers something over PSN.

PSN Plus may not offer much more now. I actually don't know what it offers. Some games and stuff from what I can tell.
Anyway, I think any additions to the online services of PSN will be primarily to the PSN Plus service.
Long story short, Sony needs to charge. Both companies do in order to make up some of the loss they incur when they sell a system shortly after launch.
Really, it doesn't matter to me. We're talking about like $5/month?

I mean, I spent that much on a cheesy lunch today. Price isn't really an issue because $5/month is pretty much nothing.

True.
Sony does have to start charging for this. They need proper staff to run the network and consistently upgrade against threats and attacks. Not doing so is leaving themselves open to...
well this!!!!!
I cannot for the life of me understand why they wouldn't want a better online community than what they have. You need to charge for that. You don't have to kill the customer, but we all understand the need to pay to get a great online experience and I for one am always for it.
If I don't like it, I'll just not continue to subscribe.
