Are scouts scouting for their job this year? They could well be. But I will say that I've been in that room and I've seen the scouts have the proper grades on players, but Jerry gets overly persuaded by outside influences like a college administrator and makes the wrong pick.
Redskins could be a key to trading down depending on what they do.
Still could see Cowboys trading back to the Rams spot at 14 and taking JJ Watt. Think that's what they'd prefer to do.
If they get stuck at 9, I still think it's a tackle. Lots of speculation on Smith, but wouldn't be surprised if they took Castanzo there.
Think JJ Watt would get more effort sacks, say when the QB holds the ball too long and Watt just out-efforts his blocker. I think Cam Jordan is more likely to beat his man on athletic ability on an inside nickel rush situation.
I heard they really like Brent, so NT may not be a priority.

I dont think NT is a priory is a big need this draft since we have Brent, but if Ryan wants to move Ratliff to DE we need a NT late for depth.
I think Garrett wants Castanzo, I think Jerry wants Smith and Ryan wants Watt. I think all three likes all three but each are their favs.

I've been saying that for months now. Josh Brent is good enough to play NT for the Cowboys.

If the pick was between Cameron Jordan and Watt as a DE I rather have Cameron because he can be a 3 down player and has experience in a 3 man line. Watt just seems like a DE that gets taken out in pass situations (2 down player).

That doesn't surprise me. I think we stole him. He should spell Rat a lot and keep them both rested and ready for the playoffs.

This is key, imo. We've got to get enough quality depth/quality rotation to give guys like Rat and Ware enough of a break so they don't wear out by season's end.

What scares me about Watt is we have had a lot of guys here that seem to get to the QB a second late. I want a guy that can beat players with his natural ability whether it be great speed or unstoppable strength.
I know he was a 4-3 DE but I want a Reggie White. Guy could throw 300 lb OL aside with one arm and also had a great first step.
I do believe the info about them liking Brent, no reason not to. He did very well as a rookie. I still think DL in general is a need....with only Igor, Rat, Brent and Lissemore we still need at least one in the draft that is a fairly sure guy to make the squad and we need to resign Spears or Bowen IMO.

I do think Watt would be a good pick. The guy can play in a lot of spots and Ryan would probably ask him to.
He has rare quickness for a DL and he should be able to help.
That said, I still would like an OT in round 1.

Reggie White was one of the greatest to ever play. I like Watt and think he'll have a productive career, but not a realistic comparison.

Hopefully this was years ago and Jerry has learned his lesson. A guy can hope can't he?

Interesting...was a pretty bad drafting years with the possible exception of the last two.
I often look at a person (whether it be a coach, player or scout) and wonder how well they did at their next stop after leaving the cowboys. Just curiosity makes me wonder if they were part of a possible solution that just could not shine enough due to lack of players, other coaches or maybe the players and once they leave to another team they do much better.
Say someone like Sean Payton who went on to do well with the Saints.
Or if one moves on and does not do much better say someone like a Larry Brown.
Has Broaddus done much better for another team? Not saying that is all good or bad. Does not mean he is a bad scout. However one would think that maybe another team would acquire his services.
Then again maybe he decided he did not want to work for another team. Maybe he figured doing his current gig was better for him or his family as I am sure the hours are much better and he would not have to do as much traveling.
Just something out of curiosity that I often wonder about when players, coaches or other positions leave the team.

He talks to a lot of people. Just because you might not like one of them does not make him a bad guy.
I will say this also.
I like how some of the bloggers have gotten more stuff their way over the last few years. There were times when you would not get that kind of information other than from some big news paper or network or cable channel.
Now you see a good number of football guys talking to guys that don't have those big connections and that is good for the fellow fans because we get more info.

That is true.
My only real problem with Broaddus is that it seems to me like he has somewhat of an agenda in regards to Dallas.
I can't really put my finger on it, and it could simply be that he's being influenced negatively by being around Timmy Mac and Calvin Watkins, but it just seems like there is a little.... something... lurking under the surface with Broaddus when it comes to Dallas and their personnel department.
Heck, it could be my imagination, but I'm just not sure about what he says.

I did NOT compare Watt to Reggie.
In fact, I was comparing him more to guys like Ebenezer Ekuban and Anthony Spencer. Guys that always could get close but were too often a half second late in getting there. I think Ekuban was the king of the "almost Sack".
The only reason I mentioned Reggie White is that is the kind of guy I want....a guy that just has immeasurable ability. Watt gets by on having a good motor. White got by with unbelieveable skills and strength. I want someone with the total package.

I don't know the circumstances with him no longer being employed by the Cowboys in the scouting department.
I know he was still here a year or so after Parcells took over so it was not a clean sweep of everyone when Bill arrived.
I don't know if they were eventually unhappy with the job he did for them. If there were other things that led to him no longer working with the cowboys.
It would be interesting if there was something there where he may hold a slight grudge against the cowboys.
I have read some things from him that could be taken that way but at the same time I think many here are hypersensitive to any criticism by anyone in the press when they talk about the cowboys...even if it is a valid criticism said in a possessional manner.

Not saying Watt has skills like Reggie... but JJ has quite a bit of natural athletic ability. He moves like a much smaller guy and some of his combine scores (like 3-cone) were better than many running backs, safeties, etc.
He's not some clumsy overachiever. He has very good athleticism to go with a motor that never stops and top notch competitiveness.
He is worthy of a high pick IMO, and Rob Ryan would be able to do a LOT with a guy like JJ Watt.

I think Watt compares alot to Justin Smith.

Put Watt at RDE to rush the passer and move Igor to LDE to stuff the run. Then add another 34 DE in next years draft to replace Igor. I like Bowen but Bowen is not a run stuffer, this past season has shown that.
I think Watt can out up the same numbers that Smith does for the 49ers. Those are great numbers for a 34 DE

Yeah, I know a lot here think the criticism is unwarranted when it really isn't... and maybe I'm one of those guys... but there seems to be *something* lurking below the surface with him when it comes to Dallas.
Maybe I'm just hypersensitive with those ESPN Dallas guys and am sick of their snide comments about Dallas, and I'm unintentionally grouping Broaddus with them in my mind.
Oh well... I probably should just keep it to myself if I'm not sure. :D

Nah you don't have to keep it to yourself.
You are just expressing an opinion.
And who knows, you could be spot on. I guess I have not seen to much of it. I have disagreed with him a good deal on some things but I don't see him in the same category as a Galloway or JJT that sometimes just seems to rant and rave on some things in order to get attention...or someone like Skip Bayless who plays a specific role.
I think for the most part Bryan seems to tell it like he thinks it is and there are times we will disagree with him.
But, you just don't know, maybe there is something there, even if it is minute, that might make him view things with the cowboys in a way that makes it hard for him not to paint things to a degree.

Well we know for a fact that some in the Dallas media visit this board.
Not a shocker that they see someone info or posts and run with it.
At this time of the year anything is good for the rumor mill and causes some fan to click on a teaser link to some info.
However maybe you should email some of them and ask them to add this when writing out their stuff....according to an anonymous source (named SDOGO)...:laugh1:

See, that's just it. I don't think that Rob Ryan is going to be spending the majority of the time lining up the defense in a base 34. There are going to be a lot of 4 man fronts, 46 looks, and his signature "cloud", "psycho"/ etc. fronts. He could use Watt inside in a 4 man line on passing downs and he would be ideal for that.
If Phillips were still our D Coordinator, I would agree that Watt would just be put at end and that's about it. With Ryan though, his history shows that he's going to do a whole lot of different things with his talented, versatile players... and Watt would be one of those.

I used to battle with Calvin Watkins daily. I dont even find it worth my time anymore. I dont care that they do, it's not like I'm the only one they do it with but at least have enough courtesy to give a private shout out to the source. Most of the time it took me says to even get an email reply.

I agree but Ryan runs the base 3-4 about 80% of the time. I like Watt and I'm ok with drafting him if we trade back and stock pile picks. The only problem is, I think we can find a DL that can play 4-3 DT and 34 DE in the 2nd and 3rd round. We need a starting RT and I don't want to trade back into the 1st and lose all our other picks in the draft.
I would rather have Castanzo, Harris, Ellis, Rackley and Sheppard over Watt and Carimi
I like Watt and would be happy with the pick if its at 14-17.
But if we get Watt can we still get a RT, a CB and a OG.
I would be fine with Watt if the draft goes Watt, Carimi, Harris, and Rackely.

I agree with all of that 100%.
I really think Watt is a good player and that he'd do well for us... but give me a Castonzo (with a small trade back) and a DE later on if it is my choice.
As a matter of fact, I'd love RT in round 1 and a G like Watkins in round 2.
Your Watt, Carimi, Harris, Rackley looks terrific if we could pull it off though.

thats the thing,we wouldn't be able to pull that off if we take Watt due to having to trade back in to the 1st
I don't want Watkins, no thanks. I think drafting a player early in the 2nd thats only going to play 4-5 years is a waste of a pick. Give me a Rackley, Ijalana, or a Cannon there as a OG over a 27 year old rookie.
If we have to trade back into the first then we lose our 2nd and 3rd round pick. We might have to then trade the extra 3rd and 4th to move back into the mid-late 2nd to get Rackely but that our draft, no more picks really.
