Giants let players work out at facility

John Kasay of the Panthers was unofficially the first player to show up a team facility since the lockout started.
It looks like the Giants have allowed defensive lineman Chris Canty to break another barrier. Canty confirmed to Mike Garafolo of the Newark Star-Ledger that he was allowed to work out at the team facility when he arrived Tuesday.
Note, now i am confused again, can someone explain to me why jerry said they werent letting players work out, while waiting on word from NFL league, but the Giants lets their players work out?

Could be simple miscommunication. It could also be the Giants' owners covering his butt in case the court think the owners keeping players from working out is in violation of the ruling yesterday. Each team is being treated as a separate competing company, so this could possibly keep the Giants from having to pay back damages for this issue. Lots of speculation there from me obviously.

This is such a stupid issue, why does anyone care if players are allowed to use the gym or not. It's not like they can't go to a 24 hour fitness. The owners could just send the entire strength and conditioning staff on vacation or some form of staff training and let the players enter an empty gym. Then what does it prove? Half these guys choose to workout outside the complex until their are mandated anyway.

I was just thinking that if they could come in and work out, in the teams facility, then that opens the door that you can talk to coaching staff, head trainer etc...

According to ESPN, Canty also spoke to the coaches including Coughlin.

Players should have access to coaches and facilities and all staff in the injunction on the lockout.

I know ideally we would want them in the building, working out, meeting with coaches etc. All I'm saying is that I fail to see how this is even being discussed. If the NFL wanted to make it difficult for the players they could. Most likely, the league had alterior motives surrounding keeping players out of the gym, like maybe insurance reasons, etc. The draft is days away, I could care less about players exercising at the complex or at home.

a) The Cowboys had almost near perfect attendance in their team offseason workouts in recent years.
b) Are you really saying Mike Woicik is no better than the local trainer at 24 hour fitness? And that Jerry is so stupid he can't see that there is no difference, and needlessly paid Mike Woicik a lot of money for a job that any one could do?

I'll add to the speculation ... Jerry is a lockout hardliner, while John Mara is much more moderate.

What I am saying is that I fail to see how this is even a story. So the league *supposedly told the owners not too allow players to use the gym. Perhaps this comes down to a liability issue or something, who really knows. If the league and owners wanted to make it difficult for the players, they could do so without shutting the doors and appearing to challenge the lifting of the lockout. Resurfacing the parking lot and making them walk a couple blocks would do just fine, lol.

Can we get an update on the other thirty teams situation? Must know how badly Jones is treating the organized/player/facility access by comparison before he plants himself in the warroom starting Thursday. Then I can boo him through my television appropriately during the draft for keeping the divas away from Valley Ranch.

No! Woicik is a superior trainer, in my estimation. I was just wondering why Giants are allowing their players to work out, and cowboys are not. I would rather have them in the building, so coaches can talk to them, so the staff can get an idea how the players are in shape, knowing their play book etc so come draft time when draft actually takes place. Cowboys know what they need in the draft and later in free agency. So, cowboys are on schedule towards mini camp, OTAs, and training camp. But you cant do that if you as coaches cant talk to the players or have them workout in facility so Woicik can report to head coach Jason Garrett where they are as a team physically.

And the first team crosses the picket line.
I wonder who will be the first to sign a FA.

Sorry to quasi-spam this thread but there is something that i would like to point out.
The NFL Management Cousel (re:trust) advised the teams to not allow the players to work out at their facilities. The Giants ignored that suggestion.
If nothing else this shows that the NFL at least in some regards is not acting as a trust. This is a good thing for all of us.
Kudos to John Mara. Its your business do what you want with it.

maybe they didnt get the memo jerry jones did, or goodell informed the giants after story broke out giants were allowing players to work out, goodell said you shouldnt do that when other nfl team owners arent letting their players work out,
thats why i asked in the post to begin with :starspin

Maybe the Giants allowed the players in today so that it didn't look like they were colluding with the rest of the NFL. Tomorrow, the Jaguars will allow players to work out but then no longer. The day after that would be the Packers and so on. ;)

Giants' weight and training rooms now closed (http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/giants/2011/04/giants-weight-and-training-rooms-now-closed)
Looks like the NFL put a stop to that. The league is playing a dangerous game with this blatant collusion in light of the judge's ruling.
