Jared Allen rips rookies who waste money on jewelry

Posted by Michael David Smith on May 6, 2011, 1:39 PM EDT
http://nbcprofootballtalk.files.wordpress.com/2011/04/allen_jared.jpg?w=250 Vikings defensive end Jared Allen (http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/player_main.aspx?sport=NFL&id=2837) has made tens of millions of dollars in his NFL career, but he doesn’t look like it: He’s known for wearing jeans, tattered shirts and a haircut that looks like he did it himself. So when Allen sees NFL players who look like a million bucks but haven’t earned a million bucks, he does a double take.

In an interview on KTAR in Phoenix (http://icestream.bonnint.net:8000/az/audio/2011/05/05052011095101.mp3), Allen said he shook his head while watching the NFL draft and saw players who haven’t earned a dime playing football yet but have clearly spent thousands of dollars on watches and earrings.

“I think the bigger disappointment was to see the jewelry on these kids’ arms and ears,” Allen said, via SportsRadioInterviews.com. “Are you kidding me? You haven’t played a down in the league yet and thousands and thousands of dollars on these kids’ arms (http://sportsradiointerviews.com/2011/05/06/jared-allen-minnesota-vikings-nfl-draft-nfl-lockout/#more-38502) and I’m like, ‘You guys understand you’re getting drafted into a lockout where you don’t know what rules you’re playing under or how much money you possibly might get?’”

Allen is right: Last month Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant (http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/player_main.aspx?sport=NFL&id=5558), who was drafted last year, was sued over hundreds of thousands of dollars in unpaid debts to jewelry stores (http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/04/15/dez-bryant-settles-one-of-his-jewelry-lawsuits/), and he’s far from the only player who has had trouble paying debts related to gold and diamonds. Spending that kind of money on jewelry is, frankly, stupid.

[snip]

And he said he was also bothered by the mere fact that players were embracing NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell on stage at Radio City Music Hall, noting that those players were hugging the man who is leading the lockout that’s preventing them from signing the lucrative rookie contracts they want.

[snip]

I honestly think it would’ve been cool to see all of the players elect to not show up. I think that would’ve given a really big sign to the NFL. You want us to appease you guys by coming to this show — because that’s what the NFL Draft is on TV, it’s a show for their fans and a show for the league — you want us to do that? Then let’s get this deal done, let’s quit locking us out, and let’s get back to work.”

And until players do get back to work, Allen advises them to save their money.

Once in a lifetime event. These kids spend entire lives waiting and hoping for the day they are drafted into the NFL.

They are supposed to just walk away from the LIVE draft and not show up because some already made millionaires can have some solidarity day in court?

ORLY?

Shut up Jared. You had your day. Im not supposed to have mine?

Tell you what! Go shave - get a hair cut and put on a T-shirt w/o stains and wear some new levis. Is that really too much to ask?

There is more important things in life than concerning yourself w/ THESE KIDS business.

Freakin Grizzly Adams makes me laugh.

See its veteran players who say things like this that really irks me. How the hell can you stand there and tell rookie players who dreamed of walking across the stage when there name is called to not show up after they worked for at least 3 years to get to that point. Just because your NFLPA and the Owners couldn't sit down and iron out a deal doesn't mean that the rookies who have waited years to walk across that stage can't.

Aw...poor guy. He's mad because he knows the Viqueens won't even sniff another NFC championship game without Brett Favre.

Because wearing a suit makes you a better person? That's the con-man's first principle.

Jarrad's out of line in getting on the draftees going to the show, and enjoying their moment.

Spending like a house afire in the midst of league troubles? He's probably right that it's somewhat risky.

These kids are dumb like all kids are dumb.

You see a new graduate on his first job making 40k a year but driving a 600 dollar a month lease car and living in a condo he doesn't own. 2 years from now he'll have zero to show for either even though they ate more than half his income. Add in money spent in bars and the kid will be lucky to come out after 2 years with a decent wardrobe for a business casual environment.

The vast majority of us were stupid with our money in some way. It's all a part of growing up. But it does speak to the fact these NFL rookies are getting very lax or soft advice. If one of them were my son they'd be catching one last noggin thump if they did that junk.

He's right about the bling and the fiscal irresponsibility, but telling them to boycott the draft crosses the line. They're allowed to have some fun.

Most of them were 1st Rounders with guaranteed contracts and with big-time upside. You ONLY live once and some of the kids wanted to make sure they looked 'big time' with the big diamond earrings and watches on their DRAFT night!!! Nobody wants to go up there looking like a BUM from Kentucky or Tennessee like Jared looks like all of the time. Yeah, the Commish moving $300 million from insane Rookie contracts to Veterans shouldn't be a 'negative' to Jared since he and the vets are the ones that come out making more money with this change to the CBA. And, it's always EASY to use judge black players who like to look the part of a rich NFL player (because it was true at one time). Anyone of them could the TAKE the money and run all the way to the bank because of the dumb CBA signed by the owners and negotiated (in the background) by the filthy rich AGENTS which now stand to lose the most with a new CBA agreement that favors sanity!!!!

None of the fat cats among the players have a right to say a damn thing about any rookie. NOT a thing.

Now as regards rookies blowing thier money; I am willing to bet that they were TOLD by their coaches; their agents; their parents NOT to do it. So yes they are dumb.

You cannot cure stupid.

Three. I think it is dumber to drink while under the influence, but that didn't stop him. Buying jewelry is dumb? Endangering the lives of innocent people is worse. What an idiot.

A lot of them take out loans to be able to afford all of that.

I noticed it too. More aware of the jewlry thing since Dez story. One of the players i noticed when he was standing up there had a ring on his pinky that if real would've cost 100k. It looked like the ring Elvis used to wear in those old clips that the lights would hit just right. It was easily 2 inches long and inch wide of diamonds. It was a broach on a finger.

I also noticed the moms and the family and the rings and necklaces they wore. "Here's the money to buy the jewels just pay me back when you get paid." Thats fine if its just jewels but we see the rings there are cars and houses and furniture and everyone wants there money when you get you r check. Most have never had anything and feel like they must quickly shed that history. Financial trouble is waiting in the alley with a baseball bat.

Completely agree.

It's stupid that they'd ever ask these kids to skip the draft. It's just plain stupid.

But that kind of spending, not just this year but any really, is beyond stupid.

He's right about the bling and the fiscal irresponsibility, but telling them to boycott the draft crosses the line. They're allowed to have some fun.

If you want a Rolex, buy an older Datejust and not a Daytona. If you want jewerlry buy it on the used market for a quarter or less what it costs in a store. And be prudent with your tastes. Buy a used car with low miles. Some of these kids go crazy and it's unfortunate. They all need a mentor and I would suggest a seasoned and mature vet be appointed to each and everyone. Their agents should be helping at least.
