The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo 2009...
You either have to watch sub-titles, or change the language and it's almost like watching an old Kung Fu movie, but even with that tis is a great movie. easy 8/10... They are making an english version, I only hope it's as good as this one was...

Still a great horror movie. The lighting in horror movies, when done right, makes it that much better. The pumpkinhead monster was done well for that time. I've been on an old-school horror movie kick lately.

Paranormal Activity 2 - 3/10
I thought it was completely lame. Some parts were actually funny that probably weren't supposed to be, but the pre-quel adds almost nothing to the series.
I'm a sucker for cliche horror movies during the fall and stuff, but it was just so not worth the time and this is coming from a fan of the first film. The "demon" just didn't seem nearly as menacing this time around.
On top of that, they never really bother to answer the big question. Why is some evil demon gonna waste his time opening and shutting kitchen cabinet doors and taking the pool cleaner out of the pool every night?
******* 3D - 7/10
I enjoyed it for what it was, after a while you kinda just stopped noticing the 3D, which is probably a good thing. It was entertaining, disgusting and groan inducing.

Did you hate the first one as well? No, I thought it was much better. But that may be just a bias due to expectations. In other words, the first was good for what it was -- i.e., a low profile, low budget production. It had good use of suspense and anticipation, which the second one lacked. The second one was just boring.

Due Date - 8/10. Pretty funny. Not as good as the Hangover. Zack G. is main thing to see this movie for. Jamie Foxx's cameo was kind of a waste.
I also saw Girl with the Dragon Tatoo (probably a 7/10) and noticed a funny bit of lazy film making. During one of the flashbacks with the journalist as a kid it pans down and shows his feet and he's wearing shoes with Velcro and the main character from 'Cars' on the side. This is supposed to be in 1966.

I'd give it a 6/10.I think it was pretty far from predictable and obvious -- inasmuch as a love story can be, at least. For one, I thought it was odd they didn't even touch physically pretty much the entire movie until the last few minutes. I thought the female lead did a great job keeping distant. The emotional attraction was subtle and the interaction was very real (the night before and morning of entering the infected zone was near perfect in terms writing and acting).
Edit: I just realized who I was responding to and feel stupid for even typing up the response.

subtle? It was obvious in the first 10 minutes where it was going. I figured that out long before I realized that was what the entire movie was going to be about. The whole thing with the ring and her fiance made it way too obvious.
Now the characters themselves were somewhat subtle with each other (well not really the guy, he was pretty obvious), but the movie wasn't.

Nothing gets by you. You're the guy that yells out that something bad is about to happen when the music gets dark and ominous, aren't you?
Now the characters themselves were somewhat subtle with each otherUhh...yeah, that was my point.
(well not really the guy, he was pretty obvious), but the movie wasn't.No, the guy was realistic. He got drunk and tried to hit on her in a half joking/half serious manner seeing if she would bite -- and when she didn't, he went and hooked up with some random. Like I said, realistic. But that's what made their RELATIONSHIP subtle. It wasn't just "boy meets girl, boy and girl fall in love, and go through disaster while falling in love." The relationship was nuanced and realistic -- even if it was oh so obvious that the only two main characters, of opposite sex, would have a relationship.

What you call "realistic" I call cliche and predictable (and going by your favorite site there are a lot of critics who agree with me). There was nothing uncommon about that aspect of the movie.

4/10 for me. It was boring and there were obvious mistakes in the movie, like they drive from pittsburgh to buffalo in like an hour? Right. Also, she was in county jail for 3 yrs? She'd be in prison already. Also, like the guy chasing them would immediately spot them in a crowd of people all dressed the same. That's not believable. Then, at the end the detective all-of-a-sudden (after 3yrs of the trial/appeals) realizes she's innocent because he said that the woman heard a button pop. He then asks if it was raining the night of the murder, so he can check the storm drain where the button that popped off the woman's jacket still remained after 3yrs...right.

Harry Potter & The Deadly Hallows Part I: 8.5/10
It's amazing watching all three actors playing the central characters grow up on screen, especially Emma Watson who plays Hermione Granger. She has excellent on-camera presence and very good potential in becoming a great actress in the future (in my opinion). Hopefully, she will do more American-made movies after the Potter series has officially ended.

Maybe they don't go out when it's raining? And maybe because the character doesn't know the aliens can't handle water and a bat is what is handy at the time?
I mean, while we're at it...why didn't Dorothy take an uzi with her to Oz?

Harry Potter: Deathly Hallows I - 8/10
The fact that they split the final book into two movies meant the 1st movie was destined to be slow. All the books are this way, they start of slow and finish in a flurry. The second movie will make up for the slowness of the search. The cast of adults they cast in these films are so top notch, the series would have been a disaster without them.
Human Centipede - 7/10
It's one of those things where you want to turn it off but can't. Here I was foolish enough to think the human centipede would be formed towards the end of the movie but lo and behold, the damn thing is created about 30 minutes into the movie! The actor they got to play the mad doctor was perfect, dude could be creepy just putting sneakers on in the morning.
The Losers - 5/10
Okay as far as action movies go, the fact that they had the balls to leave a cliff hanger on a movie that is completely undeserving of a sequal pissed me off though. Wrap the damn story up!

I thought if Smith's character was both a little more detailed and slightly less mysterious, the movie could have been a touch better at least. The organ donation sub-lines were done well, but I enjoyed the ending of his helping the battered wife/mother storyline just as much as the others.
Whether it's real life or fiction, I always like seeing a happy ending to a domestic abuse situation. Seeing the mother and her kids running free along the beach was a great scene.

Unstoppable: 6.5/10 - Not really much tension in this movie at all. The performances were pretty good (outside of the executives), but never much of a feeling that anything really bad would happen. The news reports that were scattered throughout were really poorly done, and one of the last ones had the audio not match so poorly it was like watching an old kung fu movie.
127 Hours: 7/10 - A really good performance by Franco who is on his own for about 85% of the movie. Otherwise nothing too extraordinary about the movie if you already know the story (which I assume most do), but solidly done. Some of the "flash" (for lack of a better word) scenes pulled me out of the story somewhat. I realize they were trying to show what was going on with his mind being out there, but a few were just so different from what you've been watching that it's somewhat distracting. The end is somewhat moving, as you would expect.

It's because you pretty much have no opinion of your own and you like seem to like a movie if it's liked by critics, and dislike it if it's not. As if in your entire life you've never differed from their collective thoughts. It's like they're the Borg and you've been assimilated.
I don't appeal to popularity. You act like I'm alone in my opinion and that it's absurd to have such an opinion. I'm just pointing out the fact that is just ignorant (perhaps stupid?). I'm not some crazy wackjob all on my own with thoughts no rational person would have like loving Battlefield Earth or something. I can explain my reasoning for liking and disliking a film (more than I can say for you most of the time). I'm not going to degrade anyone for liking the movie, but I thought it was terrible, boring, uninteresting drivel, and I'm obviously not alone in that assertion. It's okay to have a different opinion on something, particularly forms of entertainment. It's okay to agree with the critics, it's also okay to disagree with them. It's slightly disturbing however to ALWAYS agree or disagree.

Wife actually found this one on Netflix Stream Instantly, not at all what I was expecting. There's very little dialog but some awesome fighting and a lot of atmospheric build up. It's about a Viking slave who is forced to fight by various Viking Clans as a way to earn money. He has never lost and doesn't say a word throughout the entire movie. He escapes at some point, accompanied by a boy slave and eventually comes across Christian Vikings who want to take him to find and fight to recapture Jerusalem. They don't quite make it there. I definitely recommend this one.
Get Him To The Greek - 5/10
The only person I really found funny in this was Sean Combs (Puff Daddy). I thought it was a painfully average movie, to be honest and can't believe it was as hyped as it was. I don't find Jonah Hill funny really. What really pissed me off was how stupid and dumb the "rock star" songs were in the movie. I get what they were trying to do with it by making fun of the simplicity of rock music or whatever but no one on earth could become a rock star singing that nonsense.

The movie was pretty good for what it was. Just an action flick with some funny lines, moments that didn't really make much sense to even put them in the movie, and then lots and lots of killer explosions and people being blown apart by crazy gun fire.
Some of the CGI'd stuff in this movie made it somewhat distracting though. THere are a couple of times, at the end of the movie, when the CGI is completely distracting cause of how it shows up on screen.
But still it was worth watching just to see how they'd incorperate all these action stars and stuff.

There's just not really much of a story to this one at all. And what little that does constitute the story is just copying elements of the previous two. The characters haven't changed. They still struggle with the same kind of issues they've supposedly overcome in the past. I haven't read the series beyond LW&W but I get the feeling this chapter could be completely skipped except for the introduction of the character Eustace (who is much more of a natrual actor than the other main characters).

because I enjoy fantasy, and liked the cartoon. After 10 minutes of it, we decided to get riff traks so we could get through the movie. It made it bearable.

Black Swan with Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis. Damn it freaked the crap out of me. Psychological thriller right up there with The Sixth Sense.
Many of you here wouldn't like it due to the sexual content and the lesbian scene between Kunis and Portman which you aren't sure was real or just imagined by Portman (however as my friend said last night afterward, who cares, lol).
It is only in limited release now but if you can see it, do so.

I don't know if I will like it or not (I suspect not based on the fact it's by Aronofsky), but the Kunis/Portman aspect is certainly NOT a reason I would dislike it. In fact, it may make me like it no matter what I think of the rest.

True Grit - 7/10. I've never seen the original, and I'm not a big fan of westerns or the Coen bros. in general so I wasn't really expecting to like this all that much. It's an entertaining movie, but not some huge wondorous experience some of the reviews at AICN would have you believe. The performances are all good, particularly the young girl who is very spunky. The main characters are all likeable, and the film's greatest strength is in their interactions with each other and the humor. It's not terribly dramatic, and I probably would have rated it higher if the ending (not the epilogue) hadn't been so anticlimatic.

Tron Legacy: 8.5/10. I had to reason out not giving it a 9
Pretty much I can call this a simplistic adventure/action movie, but simplistic in a GOOD way. I had pretty strong reaction to this movie due to the subject but honestly it has been a looong time since I felt this way about a movie, in fact it was the Matrix movies.
I won't kill this with detail but you will recognize the directors biggest influences in Kubrick,Wachowski brothers and Christopher Nolan.
The facets in the movie are just executed so very well, from story to direction to editing this is a very harmonious film.
In a new age of "comic book" movies and other kitschy films that are normally half-cocked and choppy/messy it is refreshing to see this kind of approach that really punches through. I will say there are definitely familiar themes in the movie, and yeah it can be somewhat predictable but it still was just such a well made movie.
Visually you know it is amazing, yes, but I still have a bit of a beef with 3D it is not really worth seeing in 3D and it can be distracting like I thought ,just go see it.

Well honestly, it's not really like a typical Coen brothers movie, so that didn't downgrade my score at all, it just lowered my expectations going in. The same for westerns. While the story here isn't really anything better than other westerns for me, the characters were more interesting (or at least more enjoyable) and the movie was more humorous to me than westerns usually are.

Did a little marathon today:
Tron: Legacy - 6.5/10. It's pretty to look at and mildly entertaining, but storywise not much goes on. It's okay, but not mesmerizing.
The Tourist - 5/10. Pretty predictable and generic "thriller." Jolie looks old most of the time, and there's not a lot to the story/action/humor etc. that is worth much effort. Good enough for a rental when you're bored someday, but not much else.
The Fighter - 8.5/10. Very good movie. I'll say right now that I think Bale should be the front runner for best supporting actor and I wouldn't be surprised if Amy Adams and the lady who plays the brother's mom got nominated as well. Only thing that keeps this from an even higher score is that it could have been a little longer and had a little more of the fights included (particularly the Gatti fights which aren't in this at all).
Tron: Legacy - 6/10. The effects were intense, especially the CGI of young Flynn. The plot was weak and I didn't really connect with any of the characters. Michael Sheen's over the top antics and old Flynn channeling Lebowski were mildly annoying. Overall, it was "just ok".
Right At Your Door... Oh yeah, I fell asleep on it... Anyone seen it?

Exactly what I expected and I enjoyed it. You can see that Disney's intent here was to plant the seed of a new franchise, perhaps to take over for Pirates of the Carribbean since I can't imagine there will be another one after this one. (Penelope Cruz, Really?)
I actually thought they were using Jeff Bridges as a gimmick to get the older fans back in but he was actually in a lot of the movie.

True Grit -- 9/10
I love Westerns, so that might partly explain why I liked it so much. I enjoyed the original, but it was a movie dominated by the charisma of John Wayne and his performance as Rooster Cogburn.
This film was a little more true to the book and Mattie Ross is more the focus of this version. The book is written in her words, and I thought it was interesting that most of the characters in this film spoke like her. There are no contractions in the dialogue -- "I'll" is always "I will," or don't is always "do not."
The girl who played Mattie (Hailee Steinfeld) was outstanding. Jeff Bridges did a good job with Cogburn, but I think some people may have had trouble understanding him (his accent is strong and his speech is slurred quite a bit -- one person suggested subtitles for him ... haha). Matt Damon's performance was a little better than Glen Campbell's work as the Texas Ranger, but that's not hard to do.
I really enjoyed the score. The music was great in the first True Grit, but I like this one, too. It's mostly orchestra instrumentals of Gospel hymns such as "Leaning on the Everlasting Arms." This also more accurately reflects the book, which paints Mattie as a devout young lady who knows the Bible and believes in the triumph of good over evil.
I've read some reviewers say the movie was sort of odd and quirky, but that's the way the book is. The Coen brothers were true to author Charles Portis' original story.
It has some funny moments, some horrifying moments and very entertaining overall.
I'll end with this. I know some of the John Wayne fans don't want to see it. Earlier today on Twitter, I asked Jennifer Wayne (John Wayne's granddaughter, who is now a country singer) about how she felt and her answer was that she viewed the film as a compliment to her grandfather. She did add that her mother (Aissa Wayne) didn't want to see it because she was afraid it would make her sad. Jennifer said she could see both sides.
Westerns are just so rare that it would hard for fans of that genre to let this one go by without seeing it because of the allegiance to the Duke. I think he would have enjoyed it.
It's a very good film that really told Portis' story well.

Some of the best movies made have been westerns. You should check out the following movies. (I don't watch to many black and white movies or movies in what I refer to as UglyColor)
Tombstone The Unforgiven Young Guns The Good, the Bad and The Ugly (spaghetti western) Quick and the Dead (a spoof of a spaghetti western)
I own all these films except Good, bad and ugly. I don't buy many films. They have to be really good for me to purchase them.
The Quick and the Dead gets mixed reviews from people. (some like it, some don't) I really enjoy it. It has a lot of big name stars in it, many before they were big stars. (Russell Crowe, Leonardo DiCaprio, Gene Hackman, Sharon Stone) The best part of the movie is the fact that it's a spoof of a spaghetti western. As if the make up of spaghetti westerns weren't funny enough. :laugh2:
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly is probably far and away the best spaghetti western ever made. It was movies like this that immortalized Clint Eastwood even before he made the Dirty Harry movies. Then there is The Unforgiven (also Clint Eastwood) This is one of the best westerns ever made IMO. You should definitely check it out.
Young Guns is just a fun movie to watch. Tombstone has one character that absolutely makes the film great. Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday.

I'm about as big of a Wayne fan as you can be, but I thought this one was a much better version. They play out as two completely different movies, and I'm a big fan of both. There aren't enough new westerns these days, and I like seeing movies like this and 3:10 to Yuma coming back around.

I haven't seen the first two but The Outlaw Josey Wales is a great movie. Damn near any Clint Eastwood western is good to watch. High Plains Drifter isn't a great movie, but I can't help myself but watch it every time I see it on. Then there is Pale Rider too. That is another good Clint Eastwood western.

You're right about The Quick and the Dead. I absolutely hate that movie. :D I wouldn't say that those actors weren't stars before they made that either....I would say that most of them were fairly household names by that point.
I like the rest of the movies on your list. Tombstone and Young Guns aren't your traditional Westerns, but awesome movies regardless. I like Unforgiven, but don't think its as good as one that you left off of your list.....Open Range.
Other (somewhat modern) Westerns people should check out if they're unfamiliar with the genre:
Open Range
Outlaw Josey Wales
The Proposition (non-traditional Australian western)
The Trinity Series (particularly 'My Name is Trinity')
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
Lonesome Dove
Fistful of Dollars / A Few Dollars More
I really liked Appaloosa, but I seem to be in the minority on that one.
I like 3:10 to Yuma until the last 5 minutes.
I enjoyed The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford....but, like Appaloosa, I seem to be in the minority.

The biggest movie Leo did before Quick and the Dead was "Whats eating Gilbert Grape", but I still wouldn't say he was household name. Neither was Russell Crowe. Looking at what he did before Q&D I don't think I've heard of any of it. Crowe's role in Q&D is why I like the movie. He was really good in it.
Obviously Sharon Stone and Gene Hackman were already A list celebrities.

Open Range was fantastic...I watched it and Hidalgo (another good one) last night for about the 10th time. I liked both Appaloosa and The Assassination of Jessee James as well. Appaloosa is just so damn depressing though! I wasn't exactly expecting Blazing Saddles out of it, but you feel like your gold fish died after watching it. I just finished reading Big Sky, and it makes you feel just about as bad. I've screwed my Christmas spirit over the last week.

I've never gotten into John Wayne, although I haven't tried very hard. If I wanted to watch both versions of True Grit, which should I watch first? The Duke or The Dude?

Most reviews give the new one the nod from what I've read. I'm planning on going sometime this week.

Have to agree with you and in retrospect I would give it an 8 or even a 7.5, it is still a good movie for the right type of sci-fi geekdom fan. I do take issue when the critics wanted this to "re-invent" the Tron franchise, that would have been difficult to make it 180 from the original.

Thought the movie was average myself, but I can't agree (at least not completely) with your criticisms.
1. There are little hints at Tron's true loyalties spread throughout the movie.
2. I wouldn't call it the most convenient moment, just the moment where it became necessary. Considering the cost, it's not something he'd want to jump in at any old time, only if it was absolutely necessary.
