Fixing the flaws in Cowboys' draft
Published 10:38 p.m., Friday, May 20, 2011

The longer the NFL lockout continues, the less time the Dallas Cowboys coaching staff will have to tutor a draft class filled with question marks. Express-News Cowboys beat writer Tom Orsborn takes a look at some of the flaws connected to the eight rookies, a few of whom are expected to contribute immediately:

Tyron Smith
OT, first round: Scouts say his hand placement and "punch" strength need work. Offensive line coach Hudson Houck must also find out whether Smith can someday make transition from right side to left.

Bruce Carter
LB, second round: Rehabbing his surgically repaired left knee is his top priority, but Carter also needs plenty of classroom time to lay groundwork for move from OLB in 4-3 scheme to an inside spot in the 3-4.

DeMarco Murray
RB, third round: Lesson one from running backs coach Skip Peete would be simple: Don't run so upright....

That is a league wide problem not just a Cowboy problem. Even the first pick of the draft Cam Newton needs work. I really don't get this article Orsborn writes at all. I mean, because of the lockout, isn't this true with every pick?

I think that Osborne is watering the view of a fan who wishes to watch the growth and group integration of players. It could as well fuel a strengthened view of how the coaching staff and changes affect the growth and development in a return to a Cowboys' way of play.

It is a comparison exercise that allows fan objectivity and enjoyment in watching the process. Being critical is an element of a fan, but the process is important as well. As much as the love of the sport by a player....but that is a choice also.

Weak evaluations made from reading some draft guide. Orsborn took the easy way out to meet a deadline from the look of things.

This article confuses the team with the draft. The draft went well. The players may need some coaching, however.

Rookies that don't require the benefit of sound coaching to prepare them for the pro game simply don't exist. The Cowboys will be fine eventually, although the lockout may affect them more than some of the so-called "elite" teams due to their coaching staff being relatively new and somewhat unestablished. Even the veterans will feel the pressure to absorb the newances of the offensive and defensive schemes.

Also, let's bear in mind that this is one offseason that finds reporters scraping and scrambling to avoid the very real pitfalls of the lockout and the desperation to conjure up something newsworthy that follows in its wake. It's definitely gotta be a tough time to be a writer.

You should post more often.
