View Full Version : SUV Drivers 50% Less Likely to Die in a Crash

If you drive an SUV, you know that part of their allure is the feeling of safety they provide. Even compact SUVs can seem studier than their shorter, svelter car cousins. But studies haven't supported that impression of safety with facts -- until now.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has compiled data from auto accidents occurring on U.S. roads between 2006 and 2009. The major finding? Fatality rates for SUV drivers were significantly lower than for drivers of other models. How significantly? About 50%.

I have a 335 and the wife an X5. In the 3 series I feel like I can avoid more accidents but in the X5 I feel as though I can survive more accidents. So I guess it's a trade off.

Why is that?
Well, let's see. It's a COMPLETE waist of gas. A huge part of the reason we are so dependent on foreign oil is all the SUV's we Americans feel we need. They are too wide for the road. They completely defeat the purpose of a REAL hummer. They contribute probably TWICE as much pollution. People don't buy HUMMERS because of their functionality (they can get a CRV, or something smaller). They get HUMMERS because they are total "me-me's" and the world MUST notice them as they drive their doosh-mobile around.

What's the % difference between less likely to die and more likely to kill?
Probably have to combine that data myself, as 2 seconds of google wasn't much, other than a biased link.
Also have to wonder about a sort of Peltzman effect. With increased feeling of safety/safety regulation, leads to increased risk-taking behavior.

Screw your little dinky cars. I'll take the F-Series Fords over just about anything.
True story on why I won't own another car. I think I've posted it here before as well.
Back in 1999 or 2000 when the F-350 4 door long beds were becoming pretty popular, all Ranch Handed out, my gf and I were headed through San Marcos to eat at Katy Station and passed by Strahan Coliseum. There was a white and silver F-350 that had run into the back of a semi with a low boy trailer. Fluid everywhere, but it didn't look like that bad of a wreck honestly.
We eat, driving back home and see the F-350 on the road there on Sessoms with the brush guard pretty dang beat up. He's driving it home. My girlfriend mentions all the fluid must have been from the windshield wiper reservoir, and I say it was probably him blowing out the transfer case seal for the 4WD and he thought he could drive it over to the dealership.
We get back to the front of Strahan and the police and fire department have the semi-trailer jacked up and are cutting out the car that was smashed to the size of the desk your monitor is sitting on.
My fault, your fault, nobody's fault; physics wins and you die. You get a closed casket and I get a new radiator and paint for the grill guard.
The more massive the vehicle, the more force it can absorb in a wreck. Force = Mass x Acceleration
If you're in the smaller vehicle you're on the losing end of that equation. I'll keep my trucks, and know that you're more likely to see me merging in traffic. I'm safer because I'm more visible. I'm safer because my vehicle is more massive than most minus commercial vehicles.

The thing that annoys me most about SUVs and the like are the drivers.
Not because of the gas issue, not because of some perceived ego issue.
What annoys me about them is seeing them in a nice SUV but driving like they are afraid a small pot hole, mud hole, bump in the road or other things are going to ruin their precious ride.
You got a darn SUV...Drive it like it is an SUV and not some vehicle you are afraid it is some fragile vehicle.
Same for people in big trucks.
Just irks me to no end.
I remember driving my Hummer Ambulance and the 113 track ambulance in the army and I would put that thing through the ringer. They both were driven up to their abilities.
Now I see some wimp in a nice truck or SUV driving like they are carrying a box of sweating dynamite and afraid the smallest bump will blow them up. Drive that Son of a Gun and quit pussyfooting around in it.

Yeah, but up here we have the flip side of that condition: the clown that thinks an SUV is impervious to ice and drives like a fool in an ice storm. It's not an odd sight to see the crushed remains of an SUV on a flatbed. In fact I had crawl past two that were tires up in the same accident, this past winter.

One difference here though. You didn't pay for that Hummer Ambulance. (I bet the wounded in the back didn't appreciate you slamming into potholes!) That said, I would take the LR3 I had off road, but I was still careful with it. I wasn't going to dog a car I paid quite a bit for. Now, if I owned a Ford Super Duty or something that I bought for work, I would put that thing to work and not worry about the paint job.

That I agree with. If you bought a 4x4 just because, then you should use the damn thing like one.
I bought the LR3 for two reasons. First and foremost, it can snow 18+ inches here and do it several times a year. High clearance and all wheel drive lets be worry less for my wife's safety when she is out and conditions are bad. Second, sometimes we can have 6+ people in our car or may need cart larger cargo.
Those have already become an issue since we purchased a sports sedan just a couple of months ago.

SUV drivers?????
Drivers?????
I rarely see SUV drivers on the roads.
I see alot of people occupying SUV's.
The vast majority of them seem to be in the fast lane of interstates, doing 52 mph, with their left hand turn signal flashing. The person who is supposedly driving seems oblivious to the act that there might be other vehicles on the road.
The people doing all the actual driving are the ones avoiding the SUV occupants.
I went from a Mercury Mountaineer to an Infiniti G35 sedan and I feel far more safe in the Infiniti. Mostly because I know I can avoid/get out of trouble spots easier with the faster more agile car than I could with the lumbering SUV. I don't miss the SUV one bit.
As for the SMART car hate, those things are great if you live in a large city where traffic never gets too speedy, but if you take that thing on a road or an interstate you are asking for death.

That is fine if you see trouble in time to avoid it; or are in a position to avoid it. If not- What then?

Under any conditions they are not "great" at all. If they got better gas mileage they would be OK to run to the grocery store or errands. But their MPG is nothing to brag about.

Nothing smart about driving those silly cars and getting hit by a F150.
The advantages lie on the idea that you and the car would fit in a casket,or a cremation furnace if that's how you roll.

Hell I had a Geo Metro back in the day that was bigger held 4 people and room for some cargo in the back and got the same gas mileage as the smart cars.
Yea yea it was probably as safe but I find it funny a smaller car gets the same as a car I use to drive back in 1993. (Hey I was poor in college and that was a cheap car that I could afford)

the 40-50mpg their owners get is a hell of a lot more than my VQ-powered infiniti gets, that's for damn sure. D:
If you get hit in a Smart by slow-moving city traffic, you probably aren't gonna die or get messed up. Like I said, it's only good for running around in an urban area. Not gonna lie, i'd drive one here in Midtown Atlanta. But I don't think I'd take one anywhere else.

I'll take my chances. Most major traffic accidents are somewhat avoidable. I'll take the superior handling and braking of my sedan over the go-ahead-and-hit-me defense of an SUV any day.
Edit: Oh, i just read the full article. This study only looks at SUVs from the 2005-2008 model years when they finally started putting Nannies (ESC, VDC, whatever your manufacturer calls it - stability control) on SUVs to cut down on the rollover-prone-ness. So if you've got a pre-2005 SUV, cross your fingers!

Not getting hit by an F150 in any car seems to be a good route to go.
Shut down.
Don't post any in here.
Spintopia got shut down? Is there a replacement? Can someone PM the location to me?

True that...however driving that matchbox only exacerbates the anatomical carnage and skeletal pulverization that would result because you wanted to save a few pennies on gas.

hur hur well aren't you a barrel of laughs. A simple "Its not allowed" or something would have sufficed. Nevermind.

My feelings on SUV's and drivers in general are best summed up by the following quote from Dave Despain.......
"I'm asked a lot if I think this or that form of racing (and I've heard everything from rally to motocross) will ever be as popular in America as it is in Europe. My answer is always "No" because there's a big difference between America and Europe. It's the difference between the Autobahn and the Montana Interstate speed limit, which marked the death of common sense in U.S. transportation.
Europe is different...it's the difference between scooters filtering to the front at stoplights then going on their way when the light changes, and road rage maniacs shooting each other in stop-and-go logjams.
...the difference between Italian stuff and most of what we get from Detroit and Japan. The word you're looking for is "passion."
It's the difference between people who can't grasp the "Keep Moving" sign beside the right turn lane, and people who don't need that sign in the first place.
...the difference between parking your bike next to four old men who walk over and comment on the make and model, then drop the name of the '50s GP star who made the brand famous, and pulling into the same spot here and noticing the old men edge away a couple steps (except for the one who yells, "Wow, is that a Harley?").
It's the difference between automotive performance that only exists in TV commercials, and the same thing found every day, in real life - and appreciated, not looked down on.
...the difference between seeing one comin' fast in the mirror and moving right, and not having looked in the mirror since your last make-up job.
In Europe, the majority of people "get" this car and motorcycle thing. The American masses don't. Responsibility lies with a dumbed down, National Nanny, lowest common denominator Transportation Bureaucracy that insures a driver's license to anyone who can fog a mirror, then mandates a bags-and-belts cocoon to protect them when they run into each other, which is inevitable because they have no idea what they're doing out there.
Bottom line...a culture that can't grasp "slower traffic keep right" is not fertile ground for the growth of sophisticated forms of motor racing. If you live here and you "get" it, savor your place among the enlightened few, but don't expect the guys around the water cooler to share your appreciation of the German Touring Car series."

I laugh because what I seen of foreign drivers in the US they are just as terrible if not worse. They have just as many idiot drivers in Europe you can see pictures of there wrecks all over the internet as well. The real difference is the US is bigger, more spread out and has more cars on the road. As you can tell I think the statement is hyperbole

50% less likely is no surprise for SUV drivers. Just a guess, but also most likely:
SUV drivers are 50% more likely to tailgate:mad:
SUV drivers are 50% more likely to talk on cell phone while driving:mad:
SUV drivers are 50% more likely to be the only one in their car:mad:
SUV drivers are 50% more likely to be overweight (not that there is anything wrong with being overweight);)
SUV drivers are 50% more likely to drink chocolate milk while driving:)
I don't know about european drivers, but every time I see a car with Canadian plates it's always doing something stupid. Worst drivers ever.
It's hard to imagine the euros driving worse than us, though. The daily commute in Atlanta is a rage-inducing affair.

Yes
The IIHS study attributes much of the SUV segment's improvement to the widespread availability of electronic stability control (ESC). Before that development came along, top-heavy SUVs were more prone to roll over in collisions, which largely negated their safety benefits of size and weight.
2. The study only looked at vehicles from the 2005 - 2008 model years. The data implies that vehicles from other years may fare similarly well, but only if they have ESC. (By 2008, ESC had become standard equipment on 96% of all SUVs.)
