my friend invited me. If you'd (or anyone on CZ) like an invite, PM me, I'll do it tomorrow.
My profile is still pretty bare, since I just got on it, but I really like it's interface so far.

Wouldn't mind getting an invite as well.
For some reason PM's aren't working for me.

Google Inc. (GOOG) (http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/quote?ticker=GOOG:US), the world’s biggest search engine, shut down the invite mechanism for its new Google+ social network after “insane demand,” said Vic Gundotra (http://topics.bloomberg.com/vic-gundotra/), a company executive, on the company’s website (https://plus.google.com/107117483540235115863/posts/PhJFJqLyRnm#107117483540235115863/posts/PhJFJqLyRnm).
Google unveiled the service June 28 in a fresh attempt to compete with Facebook Inc.’s site. Google+ looks similar to Facebook, with streaming updates of photos, messages, comments and other content from selected groups of friends, said Bradley Horowitz, vice president, product management (http://topics.bloomberg.com/product-management/). The service, which integrates with Google’s maps and images, seeks to help people organize social contacts easily within groups of friends.

lame, a few people I sent invites to were able to get the invite and join just less than 2 hours ago.

I just don't see the necessity for this when pretty much everyone that would ever join this is already on Facebook.
My space failed because it was hideous, unnavigable, and only for children.

Pretty strong points there. Google may have let Facebook get too large before launching this. The reason Twitter caught on is that it works with Facebook and is a different type of social media. Google+ sounds to me like a Facebook knock-off. Anybody have anything that seperates it from Facebook?

So far I like the circles function.
Just messed with it for a few minutes but it appears that you can break down people into groups by clicking and dragging.
With each group you can send messages out so only those in that group can see or you can set up a video chat with individuals or a group that only they can see.
I don't know if it will catch on...but it might be nice to have something similar to facebook without all the ads, spam, hackers (similar to what happened with *******) for a time.
As for my facebook...for the most part I have a large number of "friends" that are nothing more than zynga gamers. I play a couple but nowhere near as many as I used to play so I have a bunch of people that I don't really know, don't care about yet i needed to reach certain goals in the games. Instead of having to go through and find all of these people, block them or unfriend them...I can now just start from scratch with some real life friends and people from the forum here.
Again...Don't know if it will take off or not, but willing to give it a try.

Funny thing is, about two years ago a friend and I were talking about making something just like Circles. Then we remembered how much we hate writing web apps and blew it off.

Maybe because Facebook is now almost hated as much as My Space (http://www.itworld.com/software/178661/facebook-really-hated-more-bank-america). (one slot behind them)
Facebook is now the 10th most hated company (My Space, is 9th) beating out companies like Bank of America and AT&T Mobile.

Further, pretty much all of the people that I care to keep in contact with via an online social networking use Facebook, so I have no incentive whatsoever to join until I feel I'd get more benefit out of Google+. They've got a long road ahead of him in that respect.
From everything I'm reading, the Circles function is the only revolutionary thing that it has -- which means that Facebook could pretty much just adopt a similar function if it turns out enough people want it.

The other thing is being able to video chat with several people at the same time. I'm too busy right now to try out everything, plus, it does seem like they've clamped down on the invitiation b/c no one I've invited since 10am this morning can join anymore (Sorry!!)
Facebook did have sometime similar to it, but it was clunky, and only for people to access your profile on a limited basis (they did away with it, and only grandfathered in the people who actually had it, I think the function is back though). It's not intuitive the way Google+ currently has it. It's also seemlessly joined with all the google apps, and services. So, if you are browsing the internet, most things you can share by pressing the +1 button rather than clicking on some websites the share to facebook, log in, etc, it's a lot easier for Google+ on google chrome lol.

Facebook's version of circles was very clunky, I agree. So much so that I just didn't use it, despite the fact that it would have been incredibly useful. The good thing about competition is that it spurs innovation, so maybe in the end, this just ends up improving facebook rather than creating a serious long-term competitor.

I think once my close circle of friends and sisters migrate to Google+, I'm adiosing Facebook. I hate the the games, the event invites, etc. I've permanent offline because I hate Facebook Chat.
I might still use it for other stuff (like coupons and deals from particular retailers and etc, but as a way to keep in contact with friends, I'm already doing that on gmail chat, etc).
Also, to everyone I've sent an invite too but couldn't join earlier, looks like that is working again, so click that link in the email sent previously! Not sure when they'll close it off again.

Personally I find Facebook annoying. Especially when people post crap and ask it to be re-posted like they do in emails. I mean to do something like literally makes you a tool.
I'm basically on it to receive messages from other people that are on it. A group I'm a part of distributes coming events on Facebook or charitable causes they want to sponsor. I have family who send me messages on there too.
I group my friends on there sort of the way Circles does. The group I belong too is limited to information I share only with them and family is only with them.
If I don't get a notice of a new message, I don't logon to Facebook.

Every time I get "game invites" or "help me" crap from people about games, that app gets blocked. I've unfriended people that have sent me garbage like that.

There's always a better idea out there. This may not draw people away from facebook the way they want, but even if it's only moderately successful it'll drive competition because some of the better features will have to be copied by facebook.
Not to mention, generally more computer savvy people are already integrated heavily using google's products, so they will be quick to migrate.

ICQ used to be king of IM services. AOL and Yahoo started to take over and their product was always inferior to ICQ and it was because AOL and Yahoo were in their face anytime they did something on the Internet. (well, until AOL bought ICQ and bloated the hell out of the client) Google is too.
Facebook will probably end up going the way of My Space. Twitter will too. What helps Google is right now there isn't anyone close to being able to compete with them in the search realm. They also innovate in more than just the Search world yet in all the other places they are innovating all rely on their search and infrastructure. (Gmail, Android, AdWords, Youtube, Google Books, Google TV, etc) Google is far smarter than all the others. They don't stick to one thing and the other things they do build rely heavily on their primary product keeping it not only relevant, but extremely important. (not to mention a cash cow)
Google made a HUGE mistake with their last Social site, they learned a harsh lesson and Circles literally comes full circle on that idea. (pun intended) Google without question can knock Facebook off their plateau.
