The Outlander Series

Any of you guys read the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon? I'm thinking about tackling the whole series, but it's like giving up a full year of your life to get through them. Any reviews...worth my time?

I think it has shades of romance novel, but isn't quite there. Dunno. I'll ask the wife tonight if I ever get to leave this damn office.
