As most of you know, all our talk of Nnamdi Asomugha and a dozen other free agents this spring and summer appears to be quite a time-waste, as the Cowboys seemingly would be doing well just to get under the salary cap and still re-sign Doug Free, along with maybe one of their three defensive ends set to hit the market.

Well, Pat Kirwan of NFL.com, the former front office man who managed the New York Jets' salary cap a time back, has attempted to diagram how the Cowboys can create space for themselves.

To start with, Kirwan's plan calls for the Cowboys to release five players, including a few we hadn't really considered as potentially out the door - Montrae Holland, Keith Brooking and Martellus Bennett. Jerry Jones said after the draft that Brooking would be back, but things do change from time to time...

No way in hell I get rid of Bennett right now.

He's going into a contract season. You kidding me? After watching him screw around for a few years, no way do you let him go now just to save 500K.

And I would definitely let MBIII go. Not sure what Kirwan is thinking.

IF Kirwan was all that as a cap guy he would be working for a team now.

From what I used to hear of him on Sirius, he isn't much of a personnel man, either.

Right on. For that cost it is worth the "risk."

I really never thought much of Kirwin and his article makes him look even more clueless.

I think Kirwan should lay off the dope. I can't think of one reason that Barber stays. Marty B's release would shock the heck outta me...can't see any real benefit there.

He's a cap guy but couldn't get the team under the cap...go figure.
