The difference in philosophy....
The Cowboys spend money in free agency bringing in a handful of average players and mid-level talents to fill holes.
The Eagles believe they can draft and coach up the talent in system to play up to average players, so they save their money in free agency on one or two top level difference makers like Jenkins and NA.

I think a good part of it has to do with the fact that Dallas ISN'T doing anything other than let guys they had interest in walk away.
And that sucks but there is no control over what other teams offer people and I'd rather they didn't give up even more money, than teams like the Eagles are offering, for long term deals to guys who are 30 years old.
In 2-3 years you'd be paying a lot of money to a guy most likely past their prime, and not producing like they should, and then the same people upset about this now would be pissed that they over paid for a guy 30 or more years old and, in Jenkins case, who was injury prone.
I'm not saying I don't like Jenkins, or NA. I do. I think they'd be an upgrade to any team that they join but the dollars have to make sense.
Paying 60 million to a 30 year old corner just doesn't make sense. We did that with Newman, already, and Jerry is HAMMERED all the time for it. Now people want to repeat the process with another corner whose 30?
And what if Jenkins injury woes continue? Jerry would be blasted as an idiot for giving that kind of cash to a DE who has missed time in 2 of the last 3 years.
It's a no win in situations like these really and I guess I just don't get the point of being all upset about what teams look like on paper. They play the games on the field for a reason and any Cowboys fan should be able to tell you that being great, and talented, on paper brings you exactly squat when it comes time to actually play the games.

It's Free Agency, we may be trying and failing. The Eagles had far more cap space than we did and can and will overpay. And now that the blood is the water and players see a real shot (in their opinion) at a Super Bowl, some will want to go there.

The one thing that ESPN did say this morning is that the Eagles have 1/6 of their salary cap tied up in the secondary specifically to three different players. Could be a major problem in a couple of years. That is what I think a ESPN reporter who is covering them said.

I took it to mean "outclass" as far as being superior to us organizationally.
Which in terms of taking steps, right or wrong, to improve their standing, they are unquestionably making Dallas look like we are run by rank amateurs. From the Kolb heist to the Asomugha bait and switch and now this? I fail to see how this can just be dismisssed. This is the divisional champion taking whatever steps that are necessary to improve. At least they are backing up their promises to their fans. They are not throwing out hollow promises about "going for it" while sitting around paralyzed because they failed to land their prize free agent.
If you want to waste time worrying who wins the award for "Nicer Guys" go right ahead.

With a sured up OL and a sured up secondary, Dallas can probably compete with any team out there.
Moves on the OL have been made but the secondary moves have not been there AT ALL.
I don't see anyone safteys on our team or in the market that will significantly help us. IMO, I see it being an issue again this season and something that needs to be addressed again this year. If our CBs can play at a higher level, as they have in the past, then yes, we'll be competing. But until this team wins, I'm not a believer. Been down this road too many times in years past. IMO, the Cowboys are the team that go by the papers/media. They win games when everyone doubt's them, etc. The second they go on a win streak, they drink the Kool Aid, and there it ends.
I'm not saying this in regards to the Eagles or any other team. Just don't see our defensive issues being fixed with a spotty secondary at best (even if we get FAs). I personally think the Cowboys will be a better team than last year, but however, the competition has gotten better. We'll see what happens. IMO,
I hope they do some serious damage.

I agree with you. Everbody know Jerry jones is one the best talent evaluators in the league. If he isn't moving on something it must be because of his assessment of our roster tells him that we don't need much improvement if any. I am sure Jerry feels Phillie had many more holes to fill than Dallas did. If it wasn't for Jerry's keen assessment of talent, we would not have gotten a top ten draft pick in 2011. So, yes we should all calm down. After all we have seen this movie before.

there is a reason the pack was willing to let him go folks.
Because they have a lot of young talent playing on cheap contracts that they're going to have to eventually pay.
Can't blame them for wanting to lock up their young studs before Jenkins. Doesn't mean Jenkins isn't a baller.

You're right. You can't control what other teams do which is exactly why it is so frustrating to see Dallas DO NOTHING.
The entire right side of the OL needed replaced, not finished. Half the secondary needed replace, not even started. The DL needed some depth before the offseason started, currently Dallas is 2 guys out and 1 guy in.
So again, I couldn't care less about the Eagles doing whatever but when they take guys off the market that Dallas is interested in and could use (maybe not so much with NA but nearly this entire board was hard up for Cullen. I didn't even really like him because I thought he was going for a payday.) then I get a little agitated. The complete lack of attention to huge holes really ****ing pisses me off.

I think a good part of it has to do with the fact that Dallas ISN'T doing anything other than let guys they had interest in walk away.
Exactly our 3 biggest needs going into the off season were OG, FS and dline. They havent improved one of them and the longer this goes the less likely it is they are going to.
Seems to me like they are content with Holland, the guy who couldnt get Davis off the field last season and is out of shape again this season.
I dont see how can you get excited about that as a fan. I wish I had the same optimism some of you have.

Also with all these other guys signing how much more is this going to make Jackson dig his heels in and refuse to play till he gets a new deal? They're getting a lot of shiny new toys but not paying their guys who've already proven themselves to the team.

My bad.. I thought it was 4 years/19.5 mil, but it's 5 years/19.5 mil
So 4 mil/year...Still similar contracts.
The gap in talent between Jenkins and Spears is far greater than the gap in their two salaries.
As I said the other day, I was worried about his age and his hunger to compete coming off a championship. It's the Philly angle that bugs me. Do free agents realize there are other NFL cities to go to?

The difference in philosophy....
The Cowboys spend money in free agency bringing in a handful of average players and mid-level talents to fill holes.
The Eagles believe they can draft and coach up the talent in system to play up to average players, so they save their money in free agency on one or two top level difference makers like Jenkins and NA.
Pretty much. Good post.

Word. I understand that.
I still see the options out there though for the things we need to work on. I know there are a couple of solid options at RG out there, there are 3 or 4 safeties still on the market that any combination of those 3 or 4 would help our secondary.
I still think we could bring back Hatcher to keep us with decent depth along our D-Line.
I still see the ability to improve the areas we need to and I'm still hopeful we will.
When it's all said and done if none of those things are done, and they just sit pat with what they have, then I'll be extremely disappointed in the Front office and I'll be wondering why they did that.

Eagles got stronger. We appear to look weaker.
They could be the Redskins of the 2011 campaign. IT never works out for the Skins and the eagles have never won a Super Bowl. Until they can prove they can win it, I'm not worried.
We all know we have talent here. We have two of the best WRs in the league. Avery good, top flight QB and a decent OL that can use a tweak or two to be dominate.
We have one of the best Defensive linemen in the league in Ratliff and the best defensive player all around in Ware. I think the LBers will be improved and the only areas where we are in real need is DB and another rush end.
If that is all we need we can address them as they become available and not break the bank.
I wanted Nnamdi and would have loved Jenkins, but I don't know if they would have been the one or two pieces that would have made the difference.
Besides, I don't know about anyone else but I am excited to see what Rob Ryan does with his new toys.

Jason Peters blows. And they know it.
Ernie Sims didn't work out.
Kevin Curtis didn't work out.
I could go on. But, I'm not actually saying that they are bad evaluators of talent. However...what I am saying is 'haven't we been here before?'
Remember all of those times that hte Eagles supposedly had 'this is the team' and failed?
Look at Andy Reid's track record when it comes to neglecting the run. It's not pretty. Look at Vick's track record as a QB. And last year once teams started blitzing their DB's and forcing him to the right, his play dropped off dramatically and he started looking like the same ole Mike Vick.
They've more or less, put more pressure on themselves by trying to create the 'ultimate team.' And if I were an Eagles fan, I'd rather have Jim Johnson coaching my defense than adding Jenkins, Asomugha and DRC.

I appreciate your calmness, but Dallas has to start doing something soon. As much as I hate the Eagles, I give them a lot of credit for not only filling holes, but signing impact players in the process. They are playing hardball. They stated they would be aggressive in free agency, and they have done just that.
If Jerry Jones continues to wait, then when he starts making moves, most of the quality players will be off the market. He stood pat last year, and it cost his team dearly, leading to a 6-10 season. Yeah, yeah, I know they went 11-5 the season before, but in this league, you NEVER get complacent, no matter how good you are. He thought he could plug in Alan Ball to replace Ken Hamlin, but that blew up in his face, as Ball turned out to be one of the WORST Safeties in the NFL.
Solid contributors are great, but it's time Jerry signs IMPACT players, especially at the Safety position. The team has gone far too long with plugging in a bunch of average guys at Safeties, and more often than not, it has hurt the team.
He needs to start signing players really soon, or he will be left with table scraps.

Not sure how signing a steady but unspectacular safety like Elam or whoever will close the gap with Philly. We haven't even replaced guys like Davis and RW11, unless they're counting on Ogletree and Holland (yikes).

Hm, let's assume that Alan Ball is now our go to safety, he seemed to do EVERYTHING RIGHT last year. Good thinking, Boys. What are we even doing?? It seems like Jerry just listens to his fans more than he does his team because he's more concerned with what he looks like as an owner rather than what actually happens on the ****ing field.
We were pissed at him for signing too many, now we're pissed at him for signing to little. Pick a MEDIAN, man, it's not that complicated to figure this **** out when you've owned the team for 20+ years and half the fan's know what's right for this team better than you do.
