I just ordered a new iPad (my first handheld device ever). I'm excited, but I was told that the virtual keyboard is hard to use. Is this true? I want to save money by not buying the real (optional) keyboard if I don't have to.

Sorta hard. It's slower than a keyboard. But its definitely better than typing on an iphone (a lot bigger keys). If you want to write long papers, get a keyboard, if you just want to do normal stuff, you won't need it.

I don't mind it at all. It takes a week or so to get used to it but I am typing this on it right now. I wouldn't waste your money on a keyboard.

If you're typing a lot (work product, or long e-mails), then you need a physical keyboard. There's no question there. If you're surfing the net and posting on CZ, then it's not an issue. My biggest issue is that they keyboard is actually TOO BIG. But they're fixing that in iOS 5 by giving you the option to have a smaller keyboard that's easier to thumb type with.

I guess if you really needed it you could have the little dock station with keyboard built in......kind of defeat the purpose of the pad though.

Most often when I travel I only take my iPad and no laptop. It's super easy to pack away. And if I end up needing to work when travelling I can just hook up the keyboard (though most of the time I just type what's needed on the virtual keyboard).

Thanks everybody. I only want to use for The Zone and short email replies so it should be just right.

They make a case with an integrated keyboard... connects via bluetooth...

I have a client that has several... they work really well...

No it's not. At the end of the day, it's still a flippin iPad. :D

I received it today and the virtual keypad isn't bad at all. I'm typing from it now. The keyboard would be a waste of money. Thanks, everybody.

Just me but I find something incredibly dumb about buying tablets/ipads and then buying a separate keyboard. If you wanted that, it's called a laptop.

Virtual keyboards (no matter who makes it) are without question more difficult to use. With a little practice they become easier, but never as easy as a real keyboard. My Nexus One (Android) absolutely OWNS my old Blackberry, but the keyboard on the Blackberry is still way better than my virtual keyboard.
