The recently signed safety Abe Elam has made it to S.A. and he's here at the dome, but he did not participate with the team during its morning walk through. He may practice in the afternoon session.

Guard Montrae Holland appeared to be dealing with a back issue. Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said they will monitor Holland's condition.

Garrett's reaction to the team's first full squad practice with the veterans from Thursday night was, no surprise, very positive. Everybody appears to be in good shape.

How did engel pull concerned out of that comment? Good god. I pulled they are going to keep the options open if one of the youngster doesn't step up. But it did not say they were not stepping up or he didn't believe they would step up or that they haven't stepped up. Where do these journalists come up with this stuff. He never even you the word concerned.

"Concerned" is a word Garrett likely avoids using just like he avoids using "anxious" as he has pointed out a few times in his press conferences.

"Concern" implies fear or doubt which are negatives so the media is 100 times more likely to use that word than normal people because it grabs readers' attention.

They are too early into training camp (free agents just started practicing yesterday for example) to panic about any positions and, as I said in another post, other teams are going to cut a few more serviceable veterans this year than in years past due to having no offseason and up to 10 extra players on their TC rosters.

For now, Garrett is doing the smart thing of assessing what he already has because even if they sign two more guards for example before the season starts, these guys that are practicing now may still end up playing a lot of snaps even if they are backups if players get hurt.

Coach Garrett has monitored Holland's condition and has come to one conclusion: He's fat.

Sometimes it is justified :D

Heck no,,, especially fat, out-of-shape players with back issues,,, that NEVER ends well. What the hell is Jerry thinking?

Since Jerry is a glass half full kind of guy, maybe he thought Holland would be prepared (off-season) to seize his opportunity with all the talk of Bigg's pending release.

Maybe Jerry needs to understand that some people are just turds and that he shouldn't have faith that they will be prepared to do their job.

They should bring in Brian Waters just for a looksee - workout, at the very least maybe it puts the pressure on Holland.

I don't think putting pressure on Holland would accomplish anything at all,,, it's not like the coaches and trainers have been silent about his substandard conditioning and skill-set. He just ignores them and gets a free ride on the bench every year, sometimes the team gets rid of him like Denver did, but there's always some desperate bottom-feeder out there that will sign the the guy.

The reason I said at the very least is we don't know what condition Waters is in, I think they should check. Bryan Broaddus claimed the other day that team officials(not sure if he meant Cowboys or KC) think that he is done.

Holland has had the back/weight issues back to Denver. I think it's why Shanny let him go, IIRC.

I'm all for bringing in players for a looksee,, even if they just have a remote chance of being a starter, because counting on Holland is unacceptable. I don't see any upside to him or any chance of getting "more" out of him.

Unlike JG, I've been "concerned" and "anxious" about some of the positions. I assume the reason I am is that I don't have the power or ability to fix them.
However, after scratching my head some, I really think JJ is waiting until the last cut for teams to get down to the manditory 53 before he makes his move unless somebody is cut earlier.

People hold on to their best players to be cut until the very last. There will be better players then than probably those available now in FA or
those that will be cut in the beginning.

OR is this just me grabbing at straws???

knowing JJ is bargain shopping that sounds correct. Also he may be wondering if we can get thru week1 with Holland (he would be in the injured list by week2 ), then we can sign a veteren for cheap without guranteeing him full year salary.

No, I think this is a very good possibility, especially at corner if we don't feel comfortable going into the season with only Jenkins, Scandrick, Ball, and Thomas. This will give us a chance to evaluate everyone in practice and preseason before committing to an additional FA signing, or even a possible trade.

I really don't believe WR will be an issue whatsoever...I really like our talent and depth there...Lots of promising young talent! Our RB position also looks really good; so much so that I wouldn't be surprised to see Choice get traded for a pick or a player before the start of the season. Tanner and Miller seem to be getting a lot of praise, and I think either of them could probably by effective 3rd string backs for us. Still a lot of things that could happen between now and the start of the season.

This is pretty much what i was going to say. Garrett runs the offense through and through and he avoids using concern and anxious like the plague.

Ogletree has picked up his game too. Sounds like somebody needed to make up a story.

Sounds like Holland is going to be finding his way out the door before camp is over.

Appears, at least from what I've been reading obviously, is that he's out of shape, heavier than he should be, and now he's got back issues as well?

Geez.

Man get Holland outta here ASAP! The last time the Cowboys put a leap of faith into a mediocre veteran player, Alan Ball was our starting safety and look how that turned out. This will not end well with Holland
