ARLINGTON -- Dallas Cowboys backup quarterback Stephen McGee seems to save his best for the last.
He did it again in the fourth quarter of Thursday's exhibition opener, going 7 of 9 for 128 yards, two touchdowns and a 2-point conversion in a 24-23 come-from-behind victory over the Broncos.
"You've got to give him his due," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said. "He's had the opportunity in clutch situations... and he's taken advantage."

You had to like what you saw out of Mcgee in that first preseason game. He was off target with some throws, but he is light years ahead of where he was two years ago. I still think we're in a situation where he will never be Romo's successor, but that's only because I think Tony has too many good years left in him.
Mcgee is either going to end up netting us a draft pick, or he'll walk in free agency, so hopefully it'll be the former.

My only beef with McGee is that he likes to role out the pocket too much... I think he's going to be a very solid QB though.

At the beginning of his career, yes, he rolled out of the pocket way too much. It was his crutch.
However I believe Babe mentioned during the game that some of the roll out were designed because throwing on the run is actually a strength of McGee's.

"I just feel like that's a time when you have to step up and make the plays," McGee said. "The team is relying on you. The game's on the line. I think that's fun football right there. Not to downplay another situation -- they're all important -- but I just feel like those are fun. The game's on the line. You've got to step up."
The kid's got it. It's in his soul. You can't teach that.
"I don't feel young for a couple of reasons," McGee said. "I've got the beard and the bald spot. But then No. 2, in my huddle, I'm old. Those guys are clueless, and I'm having to coach them up on every little detail. I know at the end of the day if they mess up, I'm the one taking the pounding in the huddle or on the sideline, but most importantly in the pocket. I'm making sure those receivers know what they do every chance. If they mess up, I'm on them. If the linemen aren't communicating right, I'm on them. That's my job, and if they get out in a preseason game and they mess up, I'm the one hurting at the end of the play."
And he's a leader, too.

I think he is showing he can be a solid backup - not sure there is anything beyond that (starting potential?), but who knows. If he can buy himself another year or two maybe he can develop into more than a backup in a few years.

Finally, Jerry is grooming a younger kid to see if he has what it takes to play in the NFL, rather than try and get by with junk re-treads for 5 or 6 years until you stumble across your QB of the future. Who says you can't teach an old drunk dog new tricks???

I've really liked what I've seen out of him the last few times he's gotten the chance to play in games. I think he's going to turn into a very fine backup QB for us who we won't be worried about if he has to step in and play a few games for us. I don't know that we'll feel that way this year but I do believe that comfortable feeling with him is coming.

Career backup. Not good enough. Get another in here next offseason.

And you can see that all from a few pre-season games? Okay.

Yes. Like everyone else, I can form opinions on preseason games. And the couple of regular season starts. Also his college career too.
If I said "Really nice prospect for the future" you wouldn't have asked me if I can see that already.
Some of our players I'm high on. Some I'm not. McGee, I'm not. He's a career backup who I never want starting for my football team.

McGee needs to work on getting the ball out of his hands quicker, feeling the rush and accuracy in the passing game.
I like his attitude, mobility and game in the clutch!
