Yesterday, I posted a piece on the Cowboys' continued search for a fullback who can root inside linebackers and safeties out of the hole on inside runs. A multi-part look at the Cowboys two backs personnel packages and sets will show why a thumper is necessary, despite Dallas' possession of two quality F-backs in Jason Witten and John Phillips. Today, we look at the many ways the 21 or regular personnel set can be deployed.
We live in an era of situation substitution. Most NFL offenses now roll through a different formation on every down, trying to confuse defenses and create mis-matches. Dallas is no different. The Cowboys aim for more flexibility from their skill position players, to offer greater greater formation flexibility, they nonetheless switch those personnel sets down to down.
