Chris Johnson - RB - Titans
Titans agreed to terms with Chris Johnson on a four-year, $53.5 million contract.
Johnson will get at least eight days of practice in before Week 1, giving him plenty of time to prepare to play against against the Jaguars. Owners drafting this weekend can safely select CJ2K No. 1 overall in most formats. Even if he is eased in slowly at first, Johnson will resume every-down status rapidly. His deal includes a whopping $30 million in guarantees and a $13.3 million annual salary. If those numbers hold up upon further examination, CJ2K will have gotten exactly what he wanted -- elite player, not just elite running back money.

Man. Paying a running back around $13M a year is a tough pill to swallow.

At least he will only be 29 or 30 when it concludes. It seems the deal includes $30 million in guarantees too.

I don't like him at all and that contract is a good chunk but titans are smart bout it by the time he is 30 they can part ways. Not like a nnamdi contract 5 years for a 30 yr old guy

That's an extension, not a new contract. He had a year or two left on his contract and he was making much. I think the numbers just look inflated now but in reality, he won't make that much per season; but then I could be wrong.

The Titans won't get their money's worth. He will probably be good, but not good enough to overcome their other short comings. They don't have a QB. Even if Locker becomes a good QB, it won't be for a few years and by then CJ's contract will be near its end. Plus I don't think he will do much this year because he has so much preparation and practice time.

Crazy money for a RB but, like I've said before, if you can get it then go out and get it.

30 mil guranteed is a ton. But D Williams just got 21 mil. At least the contract was for 4 years and he will only be 29 when it's up. They are not paying a 29 or 30 year old...CJ is 25.

Home-run hitting RBs fit well in totday's NFL. It's VERY hard to march the ball down field anymore with the old 3 yeards a nd cloud of dust thing. Big plays are an absolute must.

Over the last two years Johnson (not surprisingly) leads all RBs with a whopping 35 plays of 20 yards or more. Runnerup was Adrian Peterson at "only" 21.

The good news for Cowboy fans is that Felix Jones is also a home run hitter.

This is a 4 year contract extension that along with his remaining 2 years on his current contract will keep him a Titan through the 2016 season. He will be 26 on September 23rd. He will be 31 in 2016. It is front loaded with bonus money, so he will get the guaranteed portion before he hits 30.

what is it about fans that loathe when players get paid. Are they EVER supposed to get paid? We cheer in high school when they play for free. We cheer in college when the play for free. We cheer in the NFL when they are being underpdaid (but at least unlike college they are at least getting compensated). But now it is time for the player to be paid what he is worth. And more often than not, people do not like it. The players have a small window to make money off of THEIR body. The owner genreally has owned the team for some time...and will own it for the forseeable future. So their window to make money is open for a LONG time. And we never seem to care what they make. Heck, they don't even want to show the players the books. Some will say "well they own the team, they should get paid". And of course that is true..but does it mean the players should not? Do you go the game to see the owner? Do YOU work for free?

I think some of it is the fact it pushes the asking price even higher for a particular position through out the league. I think Johnson is a great player I also think the pay was in excess. I don't fault him for asking for it or getting it but I don't agree with it. I would also say as players pay increased the owner cost increases and all of a sudden our prices start increasing. When you say owners money where do you think they are getting their money?

Wow, that is just stupid to pay a freaking RB "Manning" type money. Almost $14 mill a season with at least $30 mill guaranteed?

Just wait till next year, Adrian Peterson is a free agent. He is going to want even more than what CJ got.

No one is asking him to work for free. Players have their wholes lives to make money. They only have a short time to make the huge amounts of money playing football, but they can always get real world jobs after their careers are over or even during their playing careers.

gotta remember...much like with Barber...a lot of times when you have gotten a guy cheap for a couple of years...the player is trying to recuperate that money. He played for an absurd amount of money the last couple of years. And it is NOT just fans that are the source of owners money. TV deal is huge. DirecTV, ESPN, NBC and CBS are paying the owners. Also Johnson was not being compensated for being JUST a RB. He is being compensated for being one of the 10 best players in the NFL.

When I see the video and images today of Earl Campbell, and I am sure many of you have...I don't know why ANYONE would want to play RB. But I resent the fact that fans think that position should be a position where guys should be paid as little as possible and be ridden until they cannot go anymore and bring on the next piece of fresh meat. No one puts a gun to their heads and forces them to play...but while they are playing, they should get what they can...because they could end up like Earl one day.

As I have gotten older(turned 40 this year)...had kids...20 years into my career as an engineer...I realize Tony Dorsett did it right. Did not take unecessary hits. Went out of bounds when he had to. If it is 3rd and 1..you fight for that yard. But if it is 1st and 10...and you have picked up 5 or 6...why fight for one more? To gain admiration from coaches, fans and media? How is that working out for Campbell? We work to live...not live to work. Because for most of us...the people making the decisions about whether we stay employed or not...do not know us...nor do they care. So give an honest days work for an honest days pay. But their is no more loyalty.

I think he should be paid and a lot I think this contract is a bit extream it is the money you are seeing the top QB get and it has a domino effect through out the league. Hell why not pay him 1 billion is that enough? Evidently your willing to pay what ever they demand no limits. Not everyone agrees with that but by no means is anyone saying he should be paid chump change

come on..their is a salary cap. Like I said, he is being paid not by position...but his value as a NFL player. Did you see the deal Fitzgerald just got? How often do you think he will touch the ball. If the defense wanted to..they could take him out of the game all together. And again, some of it I am sure is him recuperating what he SHOULD have been paid when he was racking up 2000 yard seasons for 1M bucks. It's bums like Roy Williams that should evoke passionate discussions. He never did anything to warrant the contract he got...nor did he do anything to warrant it AFTER he got it. Chris Johnson has been lights out.

I don't think Johnson is the only one who has received a deal that was on the extream side. As for not being paid by position? come on, so when AP is looking at his next contract you don't think him and his agent are not looking at what the highest paid RB in the league is getting and basing their demands on that? You can sit there and say this all you want but that is not the reality of it.

Joshmvii

You get paid by your position. It doesn't matter if you're the best RB in the league, you don't get paid QB money because you're not as important. It doesn't matter if you touch the ball 25 times a game. What matters is a RB is one of the easiest starting positions to replace. As long as you have a good o-line and a good passing game, your running game will be fine whether you have Chris Johnson or a Felix Jones.

I wouldn't have paid him as much as they did, but it's their GM's decision.

It's not almost 14 mil a season. He had 2 years left on his contract. They added 4 more years. It averages out to less than 10 mil a year and he gets 31 mil in the first 3 years and 30 of that is guaranteed. per nfl network

He was getting a lot of hate mail...stuff like he belongs in the field picking cotton, etc. He was not referring to the average fan, but to the knuckleheads and haters. He's just not a brilliant wordsmith (understatement).

Of course, he can be pretty goofy at times himself, but Johnson is generally a happy, fun-loving, hard-working teammate.

I would have LOVED to have drafted that guy.

But no need to look back now, as those 1st three seasons in which he led the NFL in rushing are gone.

I like what we have here and with our passing game we don't need the NFL's top back to be very successful

And 10 mil a year is right in line with what the top backs are making.
