Sources: Carson Palmer visited Bengals

9/1/2011 6:27:32 PM

A Cincinnati Bengals front office source said quarterback Carson Palmer was at Paul Brown Stadium in late July and met with owner/GM Mike Brown, according to Bob Holtzman of ESPN (http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/6918581/quarterback-carson-palmer-visited-cincinnati-bengals-late-july-sources-say).

Palmer, who has four years left on his contract, told one of the NFL's least-successful franchises in January that he would retire if he's not traded. The Bengals have had two winning seasons in the last 20 years, one of the worst stretches of futility in league history.

Bengals front office sources told Holtzman it is possible Palmer could report to the Bengals next week. The 31-year-old Palmer has never filed retirement papers, so the team would be obligated to pay him or trade him.

Brown has said the team will not trade Palmer, who is scheduled to make $11.5 million this season if he plays.

*******

Stay tuned.

Brown is a complete fool.

Letting his pride get in the way of smart business.

Palmer is going to come in and make 12M just to do nothing because Brown has to "be the man".

I normally side with players but I can't blame Brown fro this. Palmer killed his trade value by not showing up and you can't let a player under contract dictate terms like that.

I hope Carson rapes Brown of as much money as he can.

Carson Palmer sucks and isn't worth the time. He's done and the Bengals know it. If I was the Bengals I would say 'see ya, you haven't done squat since 2006.'

Then just cut him or trade him. Brown trying to be the bigger man is just idiotic. If I'm Palmer I show up and get what I want, or get paid.

this whole episode very nicely illustrates why they are called the BUNGLES.

Normally I wouldn't completely side with either one of them on something like this but I'll admit this has me interested and hoping Palmer does show up, right before the start, and force them to either make the decision to pay him or trade him.

The best part of that is if they refuse to trade him and then they have to decide if they're going to start him, cause of the money, or have the highest paid back up QB in the world.

Palmer should come in and collect that $11M I would.

Oh yeah!
There's pride and then there is just plain old stupidiy. Take the money Carson.

Brown is a big reason why they put in a salary floor going forward. The guy has been low-balling the salary structure and pocketing the revenue-sharing from teams like like the Cowboys and the league in general.

He would force them to act quick also. Isn't he garanteed his entire salary for the year if he is on the opening day roster?

Good thing I picked him up, with the last pick, in my 18 round fantasy draft! A stroke of pure genius!!

I picked him up in the 14th Round of my 17-round slow live draft this morning. 14 teams, and you start two QBs. QBs are like GOLD in this format. Getting a starter that late, even a mediocre one, is a stroke of luck/genius!

I could see it in that format. You probably have 3-4 QBs on your roster. So nice, low risk move.

In a standard 10-12 team league with 1 starting QB, however, Palmer is at best a backup.

I can't believe he's only 31.
