I dont think anybody is going to pick him up and we are holding a spot open on the practice squad.

Parnell, a basketball player being the only backup OT on the roster. That's sounds crazy to me.

Thank God. The guy is a waste of space on a roster.

A little surprised but I would not be to see him brought back. I know the Cowboys liked what they saw when they put him at OG in which he had limited space to work with and could hide some of his flaws. I really dont think they want to give up on him just yet.

I'm pretty sure the Cowboys believe Dockery can play RT if he had to.
Right now I'd say the backup plan at LT is Tyron Smith.

Young was probably hurt by the lockout as much as anyone. He really could have used time in the off-season conditioning program.

I was thinking the same about Dockery.
I always thought he a little miscast as a guard.

I don't have a big problem with cutting Young, but I am a bit concerned with the lack of depth at offensive tackle.

That's a legitimate concern.
I'm not sure who's out there who would be a decent choice for backup tackle, i.e. not too old and not expensive.
Really someone like Dockery, 30ish.

Young was probably hurt by the lockout as much as anyone. He really could have used time in the off-season conditioning program. That's actually close to what Nate Newton has said is his problem. He said that Young training on his own got top heavy which has screwed up his balance. Nate said he was hurt the most by not getting to work with Woicik and that he played much better as a rookie.

The pickings are very very slim. Ex-Seahawk Ray Willis is one of the few with any experience at all.
We should have taken the time to add someone like Sean Locklear when we had the chance in free agency, but we were too busy doing nothing.
Unfortunately, this appears to be another one of those situations where we made our bed with players like Parnell and now have to lay in it.

Kosier and Arkin can play tackle as well. But then again if we have to put Young on the field we are already screwed.

I guarantee you they never want Arkin or Kosier at OT. That would be desperation and Romo would get killed.

Give him more time to get with the program and see if he can improve. Doesn't cost you much.

all of these players received very detailed conditioning plans -- they probably also got a list of trainers who the team recommended they go to for implementation of those plans.
if Young was "hurt" by the lockout, it is because he hurt himself by not following instructions.

Parnell scares me at swing tackle, but not much more than you. And as someone else, if we had to go to Young playing tackle, we were already screwed.
Dockery & Kosier both have experience in the NFL (be it in spot instances) at RT. Smith would probably move to LT if Free went down for anything more than the rest of the game.

That is probably true.
I just wonder why we did not play him at the end of last season to see exactly what he had. Instead we wasted time with Marc Colombo who was clearly done.

Probably because the coaches saw in practice just how bad Young was. No need to see a trainwreck in games.
I thought that spoke volumes about where Young was when a one legged Colombo is a better option.

They must think that Dockery can be the backup at RT.
Dockery's bio indicates that he was the backup RT his rookie year. It also indicates that he played some OT in college.
I was impressed with Parnell in the preseason. He is raw but his elite athleticism kept him out of trouble on most snaps. He probably played more snaps than any player in the preseason games because no one else got snaps at backup LT.
Sam Young looked slightly better last year in the preseason than he did this year.

I wouldn't be averse to that at all...Coming into this years training camp, I and many others believed Sam Young had a future at RT for us. He played fairly well last year and although he looked pretty bad this season, he may be worth keeping around and at least trying to develop on the PS, and give him another look next year.

If true, that makes cutting Holland / signing Dockery make more sense. Two birds with one stone. Backup RT and (hopefully) an upgrade at backup guard in one player.
If he could also play center, we could cut Kowalski and add a third kicker.

I was just rewatching the Miami game last night. Young did alright, but he was going up against 2nd/3rd teamers and was just adequate. His lateral agility, side-step, are some of his biggest issues.

That's one of the problems with having two young, highly paid, starting OTs.
You can't really afford to pay significant money to a vet backup who'd actually worth a crap...you don't expect their backup to play, and you aren't exactly developing a young guy as their replacement. Basically, you want a cheap, live body who can at least get the job done with TE help.
Great to have Free and Smith as starters...a little more difficult to find a backup swing tackle for the right price.

I'm pretty sure I said I expected this to happen in another thread 2 or 3 days ago. I'm not at all surprised they kept Parnell, to me he looks like he can move pretty well and has good size, and could actually develop into a legitimate player. Whereas Young is pretty much a step above a stiff.

ESPN Dallas is saying the Cowboys want to add Young to the practice squad.
I have no problem with that, he just doesn't deserve to be on the 53-man roster this year. Figured he'd be among the first cut if the Cowboys claimed anyone.

I had him off my final 53. Young doesn't fit the new offensive line profile, and he can't play guard, either (imo). I don't see the point in even signing him to the practice squad. Nate Newton stated that Young gained some weight and was top heavy. I think Young is a phone booth player, anyway.

Garrett quote on Dockery:
“He plays with some aggressiveness and some snap to him,” Garrett said. “He has some position flex, but more than anything else some veteran experience in the interior of the line.”

You can believe that Phil Costa, David Arkin, Bill Nagy, Kevin Kowlaski and Jeremy Parnell are better than Alex Barron, Marc Columbo, Leonard Davis, Montrea Holland and Sam Young.

The team thinks it hit on all of them, at least. If they're right, that means we've got 4 of our 5 starters as home-grown draft picks or street FAs. With Arkin and Kawalski as home-grown interior backups and Parnell plucked from a practice squad as a player they obviously liked when he came out. That's not too shabby.

I'd say it's borderline outstanding considering their youth.

Lol, Salty...at least this season, it shouldn't resemble a taped off zone.
