I hope they run Miles extra during practice this week just to make sure there's no rust. He needs to be sharp against the Jets.

This is probably a STRONG rebuilding year so Garrett is getting his guys in place, removing all the slobs and entitled players while keeping the hungry players who want to be team players, get better, and contribute to a winning team. Removing Gurode was part of that regardless of our status at center right now is.
Kowalski has done ok at center, so we won't lose too much from Costa to him.

With this line, QB may be part of the rebuilding process when Romo gets killed!

Dockery can come in and play LG and then slide Nagy over to center for this game. I think Garrett knew what he wanted to do all along. Dockery is not the most agile fox on the fence but his work ethic has never been questioned. I think he has worked this off season and lost a few pounds. If he wasn't better than Holland they would not have given up the 500K roster bonus.

I would have felt the same way last year. This year, the entire offense is practicing against elaborate blitzes in EVERY practice. I actually think facing the Jets in the first game is perfect.Their offense is not all that.

Nagy didn't get any snaps at center since the 1st preseason game.
I knew that Kowalski made the roster when Nagy didn't get any snaps in the last game.

Costa better get back in the lineup, in my opinion. Kowalski held his own out there with the 1st unit against Minnesota.

IRVING, Texas -- The Cowboys kicked off preparations for Sunday’s season opener at the New York Jets with three starters not practicing and two more working through rehab.
Cornerback Terence Newman (groin), defensive end Marcus Spears (groin) and center Phil Costa (knee) are sitting out, although Newman and Spears are doing on-field rehab work. Costa was riding the bike in the weight room.
Linebacker Bradie James (ankle) and wide receiver Miles Austin (hamstring) were in uniform but went through rehab in the portion of practice open to the media. Austin missed the last three preseason games and James missed the finale at Miami.

Gurode, Bigg, and Columbo werent particularly strong at picking up blitzes or dealing with speed. The Cowboys may lose in the trenches but those guys werent going to make it noticably better.

Going into the season with those three aging increasingly ineffective vets (Gurode, Colombo, Davis) would not have changed the possibility of Romo ending up on the injured list. Conversely, I believe standing pat with that line from last year would have actually increased the probability of Romo ending up injured early on in the season.
The young new line is hungry, proud, and dying to get in and prove the detractors wrong. There will always be detractors in any situation. Thankfully, we have coaches like Garrett and Ryan that help to make me sleep easier at night knowing they're involved in the pivotal decisions that guide this team. I actually believe this young line is going to shine this year. They'll have their isolated lapses in communication and concentration (earlier in the season) but it won't be anything like that perpetual swiss cheese front that called themselves protecting Romo last year...

anyone thinking that three young rookies or almost rookies are not going to be worse then our line was last year to start is drunk. Now if they can learn quick that can change but sorry, they are going to be fooled and tricked. There is no stopping it.
Yes they are much quicker; but they are also much weaker. Bull rushes from the likes of Suh and company will be bad news. And they will be tricked and make mistakes.
Now I have hopes that by midseason they will have learned enough that they will be better overall. But to think there will not be drop off to start is nuts.
Frankly if I was red ball I would be using roll outs quite often. The strength of the O line now is at tackle; and while Smith will make mistakes his extreme athletic ability will allow him to recover better than anyone else. The pressure will be coming up the middle; so the answer is to roll out away from it.

If you think an undrafted free agent rookie is going to be anywhere close to as good as Gurode would have been you need to put the pipe down, seriously. Cutting him was purely about the money, while Costa might not be that far off a declining Gurode, Kowalski ain't even close and we have another rookie right next to him on Sunday. I'd take last years line over what we're going to have out there on Sunday for that game in a heartbeat even if it had Colombo

fair enough, there will be a learning curve and the idea of more rollouts may be just the answer while this offensive line learns the ropes. I do hold the opinion that they will be a better group than what we had in Columbo, Davis and Gurode though.
Actually I wonder why we don't do more rollouts because I really think Romo shines much more on the run, that is not to say he isnt very good in the pocket just that IMO he is the best QB when he is on the run.

You're right in saying rookies, since Costa is riding a bike in practice, which means that Killer will probably start this weekend. There's no way Dockery is going to learn the playbook in a week.

Screen passes, delayed draws, and a huge dose of the running game... Prepare for it and enjoy a strong start to the season. We're going to beat the Jets with this formula. Perhaps then some of us will start to believe a bit more in our new young guns. ;)

Your sig says choice will receive a bigger role this year and you put check next to it. How do you know he will? Actually all indications are his role won't change at all or he'll even lose a little with both murray and tanner making the squad as well.

I liked Gurode and all but the fact that he signed on to be a backup on Baltimore should tell you a little bit about his talent level right now.

I understand not wanting to pay big money for a backup but if Kitna is out there in the 2nd half a lot of people including Jerry is probably going to wish he did. No matter how bad you think Gurode is he's 100x times better then a completely green undrafted FA who doesn't even have the luxury of a full offseason to learn assignments

That statement is in play and it remains to be seen. However, by virtue of the release of Marion Barber, Choice will be #2 on the depth chart. Last year he was #3. See what I did there?

Regardless of how you feel about us going into the Jets game with some rookies, this team is better off in the long run (and IMO in the not so short short term) without Gurode, Davis, and Columbo.

As much as we like to place Rex Ryan on a pedestal (I'm guilty of it because I love the change on Defense), his defense is trickery and nothing that would differ from what you see at the college level from a creative DC. I find it hard to believe that Kowalski would look completely out of place. The guy was given a 3 hour notice that he would start the Minnesota game. Then he swiftly put in a lunch pail day of work protecting Romo and opening holes on the line against Minny's 1st team D. No balls on the ground.. No sacks. That's measurable success in my book. At some point in time you will have to just let it go and hop on board. the old heads are gone. It's time to rally around and support our new young athletic offensive line.
I'm sure you'll grip all the way up until we have that success against the Jets though. I look forward to your thoughts as the first few weeks unfold.

Doing well against a Vikes D not doing much of anything other then the basics and doing it in a real game against a very active Jets front is 2 completely different things. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say no, Toledo is probably not going to prepare you for that

He's a Center not a Tackle. He didn't get to where he is today simply by chance. Many unsigned RFAs find themselves in great situations contributing on the NFL level regularly. Will that happen for Kowalski? That remains to be seen. I do like Costa better at the position but Kowalski is no slouch. We'll talk as the season unfolds. My single concerns for both Costa and Kowalski is both of them having the faith in themselves to make the proper line calls. That will be an early challenge for both of them but, once again, it's not like we're talking about two Pop Warner players. These guys both made it through Garrett's strainer and if you think that's an easy feat you're fooling yourself.

The improvement in athleticism will help with the inevitable mistakes that the OL will make. I will take my lumps and I am pretty sure that Red will handle this appropriately, with some 3 step drops and mixing in the run to take the steam out of the pass rush.
I think this will be both team's approach and the QB that executes their respective game plans will more than likely lead their team to victory on Sunday night.

Not concerned about who's not practicing until Wednesday.
This is a game where Garrett's playcalling and Romo can help the inexperienced OLine. I'm sure we'll try to hit the Jets with a lot of perimeter runs, misdirection and screens. We'll win or lose this game with Romo's ability to minimize damage the 4-5 times the Jets have a free rusher coming at him.
Of course, the defense needs to keep the Jets at 20 or below for us to have a good shot.
