I sincerely despise going there. I only go when I'm forced in to it. But.. when Walmart introduced their little carousel bagging system, where they throw your items in the bags and spin it around, was anyone bothered by this?
Whatever happened to them putting your bags into your cart? I've always thought it to be the job of the store to do this. I've heard that if you just wait, they'll do it for you, but they never give you that impression. They just put your stuff in the bags and spin it around.
I mean it's not that big of a deal but it's kind of annoying how such a large corporation, already cuts costs by running a 24 hr Walmart here, with 2 registers open and a long line at each, at around 11 PM. In addition, can't even pay people to do some bagging or think they'll save some manpower by forcing that obligation onto the customers. Self checkout is fine, but you more or less get the choice to use those. I hate how you're forced to look like a lazy ***** to make them do something any self respecting company who bags items should do. It also comes across as rude to me, to do it.
And before anyone says it, I'm not some stuck up snob who thinks I'm too good to put my own groceries in my cart. It's just one of those irritating things, that I was going to put in to my "Things that irritate you" thread, but couldn't because it got locked.

Is Walmart where you buy your tupperware? :muttley:
I can't stand Walmart. Mostly it's the people there. I swear half of them don't take baths and nothing makes more want to get more violent with someone than to see the way some of them treat their children. The people I walk passed when entering that are a the return desk. The people at the return desk, It's unreal what they think they can do. :bang2:
I avoid that place like the plague. I don't think I've been in that place more than once a year over the past five to six years.
I'm with zrinkill. If I need to go to a large discount store like Walmart. Target is a MUCH better (and cleaner) alternative.

I think it is ironic that someone basically complains about a store that is too lazy to put the bags in the cart because they themselves are too lazy to want to put the bags in the cart.
Of all the things to complain about with wal-mart and this is the one chosen.
Geez this country has gotten too lazy.
People go to walmart, and walmart thrives, because of cheap products. Don't go into a cheap store and expect top notch products and service...seems like common sense to me.
If it bugs someone that much...do like a few above have said and just go somewhere else.

Responding to the bolded. This isn't at all about laziness on their or my part. I'm not sure how I can make it any easier to understand. The whole thing that makes it so irritating is that it is their job to put the stuff in your cart. This isn't some luxury service we're talking about here, it's a common thing in a lot of stores.
The whole carousel they've put in basically says "We're not doing it any more, we're not paying our cashiers to do it any more, or bag boys" even though they're trained to put them in your carts, they assume the customer will do it. And putting customers in a spot to feel uncomfortable to either wait for the cashiers to do it, or request it, makes them look lazy. So they probably realize that most people wouldn't ask and just go about it on their own. That's the whole part that is irritating. You think if I can take the time to sit on CZ and explain something so fundamental to someone I can't throw 10 bags in to a cart?
You also must of missed out on the parts where I said I only go if I'm forced to. The GF loves to shop there, I don't.

Kmart? Really? That's an idiot tax if there ever was one. Another crap hole like wal-mart but with prices that are 30% higher. Even their sale items are 15% more than other places.
I'm more concerned with getting out of Wal-Mart as soon as possible, so I'm glad I don't have to wait for them to bungle around trying to put stuff in my cart.

Eh, I don't mind wal-mart too much. Basically it's like Yeags said, I know what to expect when I go in. I have one just about a mile from my office in Nashville and If I HAVE to go there for something I know that there is a 60/40 chance I will get a cashier that doesn't speak English. I also know that if I HAVE to go there I have a 60/40 chance of getting the right amount rung up on the first shot.
So all in all, not having them put the items into a cart (which I rarely have) is not the Armageddon that some would feel.

Customer service has gone the way of common sense and common courtesy. It's no so common anymore. We have become and entitlement society so the workers who are doing these jobs don't think they owe it to anyone wot provide the full scope of service they are being paid for. It's just the way society is today.
I agree with you that it is can be annoying, but if you lower your expectations you won't get upset with it as much.
Now if someone is overtly ignorant or acting in a way that would cause me to think they were being disrespectful I would tell them about it and then tell a manager about it. Then I would pull out my American Express card and tell him that the next time I come into this store and I see that person working here, this will be the last time they see this card.

This is one of those thoughts that pass through your head as something that you think doesn't make any sense, or with this, annoying. Typically not worthy of some long drawn out discussion, but yeah, it did bother me.
It is like the washing machines in a laundromat. Have you ever wondered about the do not climb in the washing machine warning stickers? I'd expect anyone old enough to read that sticker to never do this. Those that are too young to read it, the warning doesn't matter. Who exactly are these warning labels targeting? Is there some regulation that requires machinery to have these kinds of labels? We're really selling ourselves pretty short when we have to put labels warning people not to climb inside washing machines. Maybe they figured a few parents might try to get the kids baths done while they did the clothes? Should schools start teaching children not to climb inside washing machines?

Hmm..."entitlement", "workers"...gee, wonder what you are implying here, haha.
This is the fault of Management, not Labor.
These changes in customer service aren't because lazy workers decided they weren't going to do it anymore, they've come down from corporate in order to cut costs/increase production/etc.
There are whole management philosophies dedicated to this. In fact, at my job (where I am management) I'm having one shoved down my throat which I will then in turn have to forcefeed the Juniors with.
Also, management philosophies over the years in the services and retail industries have evolved to treat employees more and more like pieces in a machine. Well, people aren't machines and treating them as such generally makes them unhappy and that also has had an effect on what little customer service actually remains.

More than likely someone did this and got injured, sued the laundromat and the manufacturer of the machine,
Thus resulting in the CYA process of putting a sign up that says don't get inside the machines.

But I will say you are right in that management does deserve some of the blame for this as they have not taken those to task who have under performed on their jobs. Wal-Mart is just a microcosm of our society when it comes to this type of thing.

If the cashier starts putting them on top of the carousel you should teach them a lesson by leaving them there. At which point the people in line behind you will be observing this behavior and become annoyed and go straight home and post a thread titled; lazy customers at Walmart that make me wait longer than I have to. :D
The thing that I think is kinda annoying is when the cashier spins the carousel in the wrong direction and you have to reach to other side of it to cart my groceries.

I've not heard of Gibson's but there was another one that actually is still in business called Ben Franklin. They are the quintessential five and dime but they also have craft stuff now. Normally see them in real small towns though.
BTW, that's what the "K" in Kmart stands for.
DOn't know what you were referring to in the first part of the post but as far as management sending down an edict to not be customer service friendly, I highly doubt that.
That's not quite what I meant.....what I mean is corporate management gradually eliminating customer service functions, practices, staff, etc.
For example, back several years ago at places like Wal-Mart, you might have had a bagger and a cashier working a checkout station. Well, those baggers cost money and now most places dont have them anymore. The cashier bags your stuff or you do.
Ever notice at your Target that all of the lines are NEVER open, even when it is kinda busy?
Ever notice that the Customer Service and Returns counter never seems to have enough people?
That's the sort of thing I mean.
It would never happen in any of my companies and I am sure it doesn't in most. Especially in today's market place where everyone is vying for the same dollar.
Yeah, but don't you run your own business? This doesn't really apply to small businesses...customer service is very important to small business in small or large markets. Corporate retail/service giants? Not so much. Customers are just a number.

We used to have a Ben Franklins in my neck of the woods but that was years ago.
And DIAF is correctly in what he is talking about with Corp management and cost savings.
Also the part where he talks about how Corp management sees and treats many of their employees. Walmart has been really bad about things the last few years including paying less for Female employees doing the same job, taking out life insurance (without employees knowing it) on their employees and then casing in on them when if the employee dies, making some employees work over time without taking breaks but not paying for the time (in other words taking some time off of checks to indicate lunch or breaks).
When many employees feel like they are nothing but crap to the employer they do not tend to put as much pride into their jobs.
My Wife's mother has worked at Wally World off and on (sometimes off due to family medical problems) for years. She is a CSM and they call her Miss Walmart...her husband joked one time that in order to get her in the mood at home he just has to start singing one of the walmart songs :laugh2: They know she will work all the overtime and will ask her instead of making some other employees do it but at the same time they don't treat her with the respect that she has earned...they just take her for granted.
Again...for most people if the employer treats you like crap, it will decrease the pride one has in a job. Now those employees have the right to just quit and find another job...but in today's economic and employment climate getting another job is not as easy as it used to be so most people stick with a job that treats them like crap because they have to pay the bills.

Preach on, Paint!!
No offense to the OP, but seriously, there are far more important things than someone not putting your stuff in your cart.
People are dieing from exposure and hunger in the U.S.A. They just don't have internet to complain about it.
Those people are just too lazy to go to the library!

Well, WalMart is an extreme example because they border on abusive. But the vast majority don't abuse their employees, but rather just treat them like interchangeable assets. Which does motivate you less, makes you take less pride in your work, and not really care about much else but doing your job and getting paid.
I work for a firm that built its brand on HR Consulting (though I am not involved in that end of the business) - employers retain us for help in maximizing/managing their workforce, how to interact with their employees, etc. etc. so I hear/read about this stuff on a pretty consistent basis.

People will iron clothes while they are wearing them. I've seen it done before - trying to get that one wrinkle out of a lower sleeve, or that wrinkle at the edge of a pant cuff.

Some of those warning labels are silly but you know someone has done it or someone else is afraid of a law suit so in some crazy way you can understand it to a point.
The only one that never ever made sense to me was something I saw on a plane.
I was bored on a plane trip so I pulled out some of the stuff they put in the back of seats. It was mostly instructional things for emergencies and so on. Most had pictures and words as well. However one was just printed out and on the top of it, it said...If you can not read this please ask an attendant to help you. I was thinking how the heck can someone read that to know to ask an attendant if they can not read in the first place. :laugh2: I think someone else must have saw something like that because some time later I remember a comedian talking about it in one of his acts.

Yeah, but don't you run your own business? This doesn't really apply to small businesses...customer service is very important to small business in small or large markets. Corporate retail/service giants? Not so much. Customers are just a number.
Yes, but the same principles would apply. But I do see what you mean with the trickle down theory. But I guess when business are put in difficult economic situations, some things do suffer.

Home depots been cheap for years. Those ****ers never offer to help unless it requires a forklift.
That's if you can FIND an employee. There's 1.5 per 12 hour shift and someone has GOT to clean the restroom.

I live in a pretty busy metro Atlanta area, and the walmarts here(although they are very nicely kept up, and modern looking) pretty much NEVER have functional self-checkout unless it's in the holidays.
Literally like 10 months of the year not a single self check out aisle is operational. It's really annoying. They accomidate by having several of the "20 or less" registers and a few normal registers so the lines can get long.

You know what really makes me mad? Lack of self-checkout at Target!
Look, we already know you don't like paying cashiers since only 1/4 of the damn lines are open anyways...just install some self-checkout already!

Are you kidding? Since when? Whenever I go into a Home Depot, I am beseiged by annoying employees asking me if I need help every 5 minutes.
The current CEO reversed a lot of things that Bob Nardelli did while he was helming the Depot, and one of those things was to put "Homers" (plumbing, carpentry, etc "experts") back into the stores and a renewed emphasis on customer service and core businesses.

Not gonna happen. Target mgt perceives theft as a big player with this pos method although studies show it actually discourages losses overall because you eliminate cashier errors/theft, unscanned items in carts, and self-checkers usually know they are being watched and that they are dealing with precise weighted scales. I would applaud them for implementing them too at Target'...most technologically literate ppl prefer them over traditional methods. Even most WM managers get this advantage.

I like putting my own groceries in the cart. I do 90% of our grocery shopping at Walmart, so there are some things I want on the bottom without having a something heavy squishing the bread/eggs/etc.
The Walmarts around here are clean and (for the most part) not full of weirdos like you see on the People of Walmart site. The one that's closest to our house now doesn't have the self-checkout lines, but rarely do I have to wait in line more than a few minutes as they are very well-staffed.
There is a supermarket chain here called Martins (formerly known as Ukrops) that bags your groceries and someone takes them to your car with you and loads them in. I know of a Kroger where we used to live that does the same thing, because some people really want that level of service.
Not that I wouldn't want it, but I always feel like I'm imposing when someone else loads my groceries into my car.

Agreed. I love Wal-Mart. The groceries are great and you cannot beat the prices. The customer service is also very good.
The carousel bag-o-grab, doesn't bother me in the last.

I beg to differ with you on this. There are no signs that say cart your own groceries. If you let the carousel fill up so the cashier has to move them so they can continue their job your problem is solved.
I would like to point out that this should have gone in the; things that annoy you but shouldn't thread but you probably think everyone should be bother by this.
It would have, it was locked.

I agree. I do most of my shopping at Wal-Mart. I don't understand why some won't go. You can save a bunch of money shopping there. About the only things I won't get there are the produce and meat. United has far better quality for that stuff so I get it there.

I always get meat there (93/7 ground beef, Purdue chicken, pork chops/tenderloins and even a few steaks) and have never had an issue.
I also get most of our produce there and it almost always looks good. If it doesn't, I can skip it and go to another store. That is one thing this area is never short on is good produce.
I'm getting to where I don't even want to buy meat at regular grocery stores, let alone WalMart. If I need meat, I usually buy from Whole Foods. It's so much better. Course I'm single, so I'm not buying a family's worth of groceries.
