Very surprising in my opinion. My guess is he didn't want to be a backup. There are a few teams in the NFL he can start for.

Now that Garrard was anything special, but this is now the second time that Jack Del Rio has cut his starting QB just days before his season opener. How does this guy keep his job?

I hope that idiot Coach (what's his face....Del Rio) just didn't just lose his Locker Room. If Gabbert was that good in preseason, we sure didn't hear about it. It's gonna be a LONG YEAR in Jacksonville!!!

I didn't see that coming.
If I'm the Raiders, 49ers, Seattle....I'm on my phone.
He's not a world-beater, but he's the best out there right now, and worlds better than what the noted teams currently have.

I think the 49ers are tanking on purpose. I could definitely see him starting for Seattle though. I think the Raiders are happy with Campbell.

He's got that Jeff Fisher gene.
He keeps them just competitive enough without actually having to put them over the top.

I watched him the other night. That OL is HORRIBLE. He never had a chance to stop and throw. Guy was running for his LIFE. He is luck yhe got out of JAX alive.
I bet Gabbert gets killed by mid season.

He had a 90 QB Rating and completed 65% of his passes last year. Not bad considering his franchise never spends any money to put any weapons around him. Doesn't help when Jack Del Rio throws you under the bus for not being a "winner" to explain why the team failed to go to the playoffs again, to divert attention from the fact that he hasn't put a good defense on the field in about 6 years.
JohnsKey19

Underrated QB IMO. The guy has averaged a near 90 QB rating over the last 4 seasons. Still a very solid starter and would be an EXCELLENT backup.

I agree. Clearly not a HOF player but Garrard has been a good steady player for a poor Jacksonville team.
Gabbert may become a very good QB down the line but seems to be a pretty big risk throwing him to the wolves like this

I don't understand cutting him right now. If you didn't want him, why not cut him last week?
Luke McKown has been named the starter. Gabbert will have to wait a few weeks, but not too long.

He was horrible. I'm surprised he lasted that long.
He was a lot of things, but horrible isn't one of them.
Not all QB's have the luxury of throwing to Jason Witten, Terrell Owens, Miles Austin and Dez Bryant. His weapons were terrible for most, if not all, of his tenure. That's before you even get into the rest of the team, their defense is terrible.

He's more than capable.
I think he could do well enough on a team with some supporting case.
I'd actually like to see him go to Seattle. He could probably compete for the West out there.

I was kinda taken back with his release. I was watching top 100 right after I got home from work and said to myself why didn't they do it sooner ? It's not like gabbert is starting right away

It makes sense.
They traded up and gave up a lot to get Gabbert and he looks like he is what they thought he was. Garrard is better right now, but by they probably want the reps to soon go to the young guy. McCowen will start, and Gabbert will be in the queue.
Garrard will be snatched up very quickly. He's a solid, middle of the pack QB, a great person, and someone who would add value to any team.
I don't really see us going for him but someone will jump right away.
I love what they are building in Jacksonville. Too bad they never gave DG any receiving weapons.

He was horrible. I'm surprised he lasted that long.
I wouldn't say that.
Given the fact that he almost never had WRs and was just now is beginning to get Olineman (who are not there yet), the guy did well.
He routinely was around the middle of the pack overall in starting QBs and a couple of season he was near the top in passer rating.
In fact, Garrard and Big Ben's stats are not all that different but the talent on their teams were night and da. Yet the one time they met in the palyoffs, DG led his team to the win.
Horrible? No. "Decent" is a better word.

He wouldn't know what to do with himself with a guy like Brandon Marshall to throw to.
His salary may be prohibative....I'm not sure really.
The Jags saved 9 million by doing this. Combine that with what they burned to get Gabbert and it makes sense...except maybe the timing part of it.
In any case, I bet Garrard is a bit shell-shocked right now.

Since 2007, here is how he rated among top 31 qbs.
Completion pct__67% (12th)
Passer rating__88% (11th)
Passing TDs __71 (15th)
Rushing TDs__11__(T2nd)
So he was respectable, but not great.
Have to say though, he did not look real sharp this preseason.

Well you are paying Peyton a truckload of cash (20+ mil a year), just signed Kerry Collins to a pretty decent deal as a backup(two year 14million).
I highly doubt you add a 3rd veteran contract.
Miami/SF/Seattle would be my guess.

Yep. However, contrary to some here I am not surprised by this move. Jack is crazy and will throw anyone under the bus to save his job. 4 years from now if Gabbert and Jack are still there, Gabbert better look out.

He'll land somewhere, but he'll be so far behind that they probably won't let him start for a while and even then he'll still be trying to catchup.

This guy could be the difference in the NFC West if he goes to the Hawks or 9ers.
Give Seattle a good QB to throw to Rice, Miller, Williams, etc and they could be much better than last year.
Garrard will be a Seahawk by week's end and will be starting by week 5.

I don't know if he's that big of an upgrade over Grossman, but he's definitely better than Tavaris Jackson.
I would. And maybe that is more a statement on just how poor Grossman is than how good Garrard is.
Garrard is solid and consistent. In Grossman's best season he had a passer rating of 81.2. That is the only year his passer rating has been over 80 and his career passer rating is 70.9. Garrard's career passer rating is 85.8 and he has been over 80 for the last 5 years. Garrard beats out Grossman in every category that makes up the passer rating. That is completion percentage, TD%, INT% and yards per attempt. It isn't close. Again, it really shows how bad Grossman has been.
Garrard also has more experience having played in twice as many games as Grossman. The only thing Grossman has is that he is two years younger than Garrard.
Garrard may not be spectacular or a top tier QB, but he is easily better than Grossman.

As long as Gerrard is starting AND playing week 11...he is my #2 QB on my fantasy team. I am in a 16 team league so good QBs are very hard to come by now.

Yep. I'd be livid.
Of course, he seems like too much of a good guy to really let it be known. That and a few million is a hell of a consolation prize. For him it's probably not too bad, for his family it probably sucks.
It was said the other day when Gurode was let loose, "it's a business".
And to a certain extent, I agree. However, if you make a habit of operating on the "it's a business" and put guys in tough spots like JAX did Garrard, people will be a lot less likely to do business with you.
I'd imagine it's probably hard to entice a FA when you might make a "business decision" and sandbag them in terms of going to another team.
He should really go to Seattle. Check out the weather up there. Get out of the swamp and stay away from DC.

Hey had that cokehead for a while.
Matt Jones.
Simms-Walker.
Reggie (?) Something.
And they had another higher pick at WR, IIRC.
He didn't have anyone but likely because the Jags have been absolutely terrible in acquiring a target.
Mercedes Lewis played well for him last year.

He has a bad back. Maybe since he was not on IR they were cutting their loses in addition to all of the other reasons.
I always have liked DG...seems like a grreat guy.
The sad thing is that they are finally buidling a team again and he won't get to enjoy it.
Mercedes Lewis broke out last year, Mike Thomas is becoming a decent WR, and Cecil Shorts shows great promise. Plus they drafted a buch of young lineman who will be good soon enough.
Good timing for Gabbert, I guess.

They were talking about this on Sirius as I came in. Ross Tucker flat out said that the Jags have the worst WR core in the NFL. So to blame Garrard for that is pretty sad; and last year he had very good stats with a lousy WR core.
