Former Cowboys running back and NFL (http://topics.dallasnews.com/topic/National_Football_League) Hall-of-Famer Emmitt Smith (http://topics.dallasnews.com/topic/Emmitt_Smith) spoke with KESN-FM's Ben & Skin on Tuesday. A few highlights:
On the state (http://topics.dallasnews.com/topic/Arkansas_State_University) of the Cowboys’ offensive line heading into the season opener against the Jets (http://topics.dallasnews.com/topic/New_York_Jets):
When your offensive line is that young and that inexperienced, you’ve got a lot to be worried about, especially from the quarterback position. You’ve got young guys that are out there playing against some veteran players, and you know [Jets head coach] Rex Ryan (http://topics.dallasnews.com/topic/Rex_Ryan) is going to bring everything he can possibly bring at these young players to try to confuse them. So from Tony Romo’s standpoint, it’s going to be a very difficult game to play.
On whether Felix Jones (http://topics.dallasnews.com/topic/Felix_Jones) can be a number one back:
He was a number two at Arkansas, and here, they are going to request and demand a lot more out of Felix Jones. But at the same time, he’s going to need some help. That offensive line is going to have to come together fairly quick. That has been a problem for the Dallas Cowboys (http://topics.dallasnews.com/topic/Dallas_Cowboys) over the last couple of years, and right now, we don’t know what we have. But at the end of the day, Felix is going to have to step up. He has the ability, but you’ve just got to give him a crease. He can’t ask for a space of two bodies, he's got to ask for the space of one and a half, or half a body and make something happen with the space that he gets.
