We are now just beyond the noon EST. mark leaving less than 3 hours for the Howard deal to be completed.

Here is what is known at this point. The Cowboys and Saints have not agreed to a trade and the Cowboys have not agreed to a contract with Howard. 2 major issues to resolve in 3 hours. But the good news at this point is that no other team has made any agreements either.

right now it's about a 60/40 chance this gets done.

Howard's long-term contract deadline for the Saints actually is 4 p.m. Eastern on Wednesday, March 16. There is no offseason deadline for trading him. Most of these media reports are misleading or wrong.

Exactly, after the Saints figure his one year offer, there could always be a sign and trade later for a long term deal with another team like Dallas, right?

after 3cst they can not renegoaite (sp) his contract until July. They can trade him any time but the team aquiring him would have to have the cap room for the 7.8mil then try and rework a long term deal......

Simply put.... if it does not happen today it's NOT gonna happen.

IMO its because if a trade agreement is reached today then that gives an extra day to work out a new contract. is that correct adam? Or is it AL

The deadline is 4 p.m. Eastern on the 14th day following the first day of the league year. The league year started on March 2, which makes the deadline on March 16.

b) Clubs will have a window, beginning the day after the last day of the Franchise Player designation period and ending 4:00 p.m., New York time, on the fourteenth day following the start of the League Year, during which, if the Club signs its Franchise Player to a multi-year contract or extension, the Club may nonetheless retain its Franchise Player designation rights the following year. (By way of clarification, if the League Year begins on March 1, the window will end at 4:00 p.m., New York time, on March 15.) If a multi-year contract or extension is not signed during the window period, the current rules continue to apply without prejudice or inference being drawn from the addition of this Section 9(b) in the January 8, 2002 amendments to this Agreement.

That must be what it is. People are thinking March 14th rather than the 14th day following the start of the new year.

Thanks for the info. Interesting we've all been waiting around thinking today was the day and it turns out we've got another 2 days of potential negotiations.

this isnt correct...he can be traded after signing the one yr deal anytime...he just cant strike a long term deal between now and the next couple of months w/o the Saints losing the franchise tag for the length of that deal

I have no idea why the media keeps mis stating this

Did not forget his name...I was questioning the TRADE part of it...since he was a FA.
