IRVING – Marc Colombo’s grit made him a respected figure in the Dallas Cowboys locker room.
There are signs the kid who replaced him, rookie right tackle Tyron Smith, could have a similar makeup.
“I work beside (Smith),” Pro Bowl tight end Jason Witten said, “and I’ve been beside some tough guys – look at the guy whose spot he’s taking. (Colombo) was one of the toughest. I think Tyron has that mentality, like most good linemen do.”
One day after he suffered a hyperextended right knee, Smith didn’t participate in Thursday’s non-contact practice. But the Cowboys are hopeful the first-round draft pick from Southern California can fight through the injury and start in the season opener against the New York Jets on Sunday at MetLife Stadium...

It is nice to see that we may have 3 high quality tackles with Free, Smith and Parnell. Nice to see the scouting department find the players and the coaching staff is developing them.

Always a good thing!
Hopefully Smith feels confident enough in his knee to play. I did not know that he was wearing a knee brace when the injury happened. The fact that he is smart enough to have been protecting himself with the brace is good to know also. I hope that all of our linemen are wearing knee braces when they step onto the field. We can't afford to lose even one at this point.

I don't know that Parnell is ready for the big stage, not sure I'd call him quality right now. We have no real depth, which is a bit of a problem.
Parnell is just a guy we see a lot of talent in and didn't think we could get on the practice squad, so we had to keep him on the 53. That makes Young's situation sound even worse, we didn't see enough potential in him that we thought, "We can't risk losing this guy trying to get him on the practice squad."

I'm not going to give them credit for Smith yet, we'll see how he does as the year goes by. I like Parnell so far but it's too early for him yet as well. When you consider all the busts, I don't know how much credit you can give the scouts.

I don't know here. Some teams are noted for being able to closely and correctly evaluate talent coming into organizations. It appears that now, Dallas is quickly arriving at this degree of predictability as well. To the credit of Jerry Jones and the scout/evaluators at work.

Boy do you guys count your chickens before the eggs hatch. We have no clue on Smith and Parnell.

Nooo, absolutely none, zero...indicators on skill. Not to mention Exhibition Games against other NFL talents in the league presently. Then a top pick in the this year's draft with solid first round talent....nooooooo. Just couldn't be....Your award for today, and the ledger was closely scrutinized for appropriate crediting, is a bottle of RIPPLE. Yes, you have earned the right to return to the Burn Barrell.
