IRVING, Texas – While there are still a handful of injury concerns for this team heading into Sunday's game, the overall mood of Valley Ranch was vastly different Thursday than just 24 hours earlier.

Both Tyron Smith and Mike Jenkins seem to have a good chance of playing this weekend against the Jets after sustaining hyper-extended knee injuries that forced them out of Wednesday's practice.

Jenkins was able to practice Thursday on just a limited basis and while he didn't comment much to the media, he nodded and gave up a "thumbs up" sign when asked briefly about his chances of playing this week.

As for Smith, who did not practice, the rookie tackle was able to observe as a bystander. Backup Jermey Parnell could make his NFL debut at right tackle, but the Cowboys are still holding out hope that Smith can return.

And if that's not enough, head coach Jason Garrett wouldn't even rule out cornerback Terence Newman for the game despite the veteran not practicing since a groin injury he suffered more than a month ago.

Newman did some impressive work on a side field, showing good speed and quickness while he worked with a strength coach in his normal rehab. At one point, defensive coordinator Rob Ryan even observed one drill by Newman, joking with the cornerback that he "looks good to me."...

With Jenkins better, Cowboys appear to have turned a corner

IRVING -- Mike Jenkins made the Dallas Cowboys feel a lot better Thursday.

He practiced and "did pretty good," secondary coach Dave Campo said.

Which is far different than the day before, when the cornerback suffered a knee injury in practice that threatened to leave the Cowboys with only three healthy cornerbacks heading into the season opener against the New York Jets.

"He did pretty good today, so I feel pretty good about it," Campo said. "We'll see what happens. But we could be at full strength."

Terence Newman missed practice again Thursday and has been ruled out of Sunday night's game by owner Jerry Jones.

A fourth cornerback will make a big difference against the Jets' bombs-away offense, and Jenkins looks more and more likely to play...

Dallas Cowboys team report: Terence Newman status in doubt

Clarence Hill
Sporting News Text

Former Pro Bowl cornerback Terence Newman did not practice Monday and remains questionable for the season opener against the Jets. Newman missed the entire preseason with a groin strain.

The Cowboys hoped he would be back for the season opener, but Newman wasn't ready for practice Monday, and Wednesday is not promised either. Coach Jason Garrett said he would have to practice before being cleared to play in the game.

Newman's presence is key because of coordinator Rob Ryan's attacking scheme, which is predicated on strong play at cornerback.

Is it me...or is Jerry CONSTANTLY trying to defend his track record as a GM on the slick...he mentioned Rob talking up Alan Ball in personell meetings...and basically saying how good it made him felt...translation...someone I drafted got a thumbs from the new d coordinator.

You'd think if Smith and Jenkins are doing as well as advertised, they're very likely to play barring reinjury. So Newman has been "ruled out" by Jerry? It seems to me that decision should rest with the HC, Jason Garrett. I have no objection to him being held out for health precautions but, to me, this doesn't seem altogether appropriate in the wake of Jerry's leaving all personnel decisions up to Garrett. Short memory perhaps?

It's up to team doctors...not Garrett, and not Jerry...at least not directly.

H-m-m, that certainly sounds logical enough. The way it was reported may have simply been a bit misleading if that's the case. No big deal.

I had managed to wipe that from my memory. Unfortunately someone had to mention Campo's name and all the horror has returned.

Yep. To be fair, though, the organization was really handicapped at that point. Campo wasn't a good head coach, but the guy never had a chance. Those were 5-11 rosters, through and through.

There is nothing wrong with the GM talking about personnel. However, Jerry sure seems to get a lot of camera time.

Sometimes when Jerry starts talking like he is the coach, trainer, and every other position on the team, I always start thinking about duct tape.

Campo is always a convenient whipping boy. No, he wasn't a good head coach, but he had weak personnel also. Then fans took that as he was a terrible DB coach, conveniently forgetting he coached DB's in the Super Bowl years. Then 2010 came along and he was terrible because Jenkins dropped off, but how is that fair since he never got any credit for Jenkins doing so well the year before. In additon, nobody was screaming at the DL or LB coaches for the dropoffs in those units in 2010. If a DB does well, the player gets the credit, if a DB plays poorly, Campo gets the blame. No other position coach on the team has that burden.

heck yeah, tons of dead money, your HOF QB goes down. one of the best blocking FBs of all time goes down. I believe Woodson went down during the Campo years as well. you lose 2 first rounders for gallowaste. horrible drafts at the end of the previous decade, injuries to vital players, and free agency left the roster depleted and rather void of top end talent.

Campo was not ready to be the HC, he was in over his head....but I tell you this much, give him the same team that Switzer got, and I am willing to bet that he wins a SB.

I agree with you. Dave as a assistant and as a coordinator has done very well in this league I also find it funny how Jimmy Johnson was so blind to hire him at the college level and then again when he came to the NFL if Dave was such a bad coach.

TY for giving me an idea for Duct Tape, the official tape of the Dallas Cowboys....

Jerry is rambling on and on, then out comes Garrett, rips off a piece of duct tape and puts it on Jerry's mouth. You can go a step further and put the Star logo on the piece of tape that is on his mouth.

Then have Garrett say, Duct Tape, the official tape of the Dallas Cowboys.....you have to trust any product that can silence Jerry Jones....then that wry smile by ole Red and the commercial ends.

BRILLIANT

Being the GM doesn't mean you have to be the trainer too.
