McCoy will start; Ash, Gilbert will back up (http://www.statesman.com/blogs/content/shared-gen/blogs/austin/longhorns/entries/2011/09/12/mccoy_will_star.html)

Case McCoy will start Saturday’s game at UCLA.
David Ash will back him up, along with Garrett Gilbert.
McCoy and Ash are listed as “or” options as starter. But McCoy’s name is listed first.
Gilbert is the No. 3 quarterback.
Also, Malcolm Brown will get his first start as well.
Those were the major moves in Texas’ depth chart, revealed Monday morning.
Others of note:

Sophomore defensive tackle Ashton Dorsey, who produced a sack against BYU in his first start, will start again next to Kheeston Randall.
Marquise Goodwin has been moved to primary kickoff returner. He’ll be paired with Quandre Diggs.
Goodwin also will start at receiver.

Get ready for McCoy to Shipley for the next 3 season, I like it. :D

One thing Colt and Jordan did not have that their brothers will have is a very good RB in Brown to help Texas become more versatile

I never get tired of hearing McCoy to Shipley! I just liked the pocket awareness he and Ash showed. Not locking in on one receiver! I was hoping Gilbert was the real deal but I'm glad we're making the changes to put the best product on the field!

I agree. I feel bad for Gilbert after all these are kids not paid professionals and I'm sure he is disappointed but Mack has to do what is best for the team to help them win games. I'm excited about McCoy leading this team and think Ash will get his oppertunities through out the season as well.

I'm excited about Malcolm getting his start! Feed him with 20+ touches. He has great vision. I think it's time to close the chapter on the Gilbert era.

I agree with all of this. I don't hold not feelings for Gilbert heck I feel bad for the kid but he clearly looked like he did last year and Texas just can't afford to continue to give him opportunities. I would not be surprised to see him transfer.

How is McCoy's arm strength? I read that Ash has the better arm and is more accurate (though he missed a wide open receiver in the last game but that was only one).

I think it's good. Maybe not as great as Ash or Gilbert. But Applewhite wasn't known for his arm strength. I'm excited about the extra chemistry Case and Jaxon bring.

Next year, Jonathan Gray arrives on the 40 and then it really gets interesting.

Yes it does! Is there enough offensive plays for these beasts? And Bergeron?

I am not sold on Brown at all. When I saw him run, I saw him go down pretty easy on 1st contact.

Don't mean to dump, but he didn't show me that awesome RB that folks have talking about.

I knew they would go w/ McCoy. He is the best QB on the team. Might as well start him now.

Could we at least let them get to BEAST status first before labeling them? :D

They are still lacking on the offensive line. Until you get that fixed, the offense will be inconsistent at best.

I don't know what you have been watching the past two weeks. But I've seen Brown break tackles and drive the defenders back for first downs and 8-9 yard pickups on first downs. The thing with Brown is that he can't get any rhythm when he only plays one down and comes back to the bench for the rest of the possession. He'll get his chance Saturday.

I'm excited about this change. Poor Gilbert, seem like a nice kid but he just couldn't get it done. Last year was a disaster.

I thought that the OL did pretty well, especially in the Second half. Heck, in the first half, Gilbert had time, he just missed. BYU is one of the best DLs Texas will see this season. They are Big and Physical with better then average speed at LB. I think they did pretty well considering.

However, I do agree, it would go a very long way for Texas if they could somehow get Peat signed. That would be huge for Texas.

Baby steps. Last season is still to fresh in our minds. I think there is a lot of talent on this team. It's up to the coaches to get it out of them.

They switched up the offensive scheme and that's what the Longhorns need to do to stay competitive. With Gilbert, they ran too much pro style offense, line up, try to beat up on the DLine but the OLine isn't good enough to do that. When they brought in Ash, they ran more zone read, motion, and it helped out the running game because the defense had to account for Ash on the option or the receiver in motion. That causes extra hesitation for the front seven and helps an OLine that isn't good enough to block regularly. It's what makes Oregon such a dynamic offense despite not having great OLinemen every year. Texas has the speed on offense. They were doing things wrong when they were trying to become an old-fashioned power offense.

Don't confuse two if you can keep from it.

We'll be in RRR game in no time. Thats all I care about. Looking forward to that one. ;)

I'm always ready for the RRR! It's just great to be moving forward from a TO machine! Kinda like Rhett's first year, although he showed promise later that year.

I hear what you are saying but I don't think we have time for Baby Steps. We have UCLA next week and after that, Iowa St. and right into OU and OKSt. I think we better screw it on because it's coming.

McCoy consistently did better in terms of moving the team throughout summer camp. Ash has a stronger arm but stronger arm or not it comes down to moving the team consistently. Simms had a much better arm than Applewhite but Applewhite got the job done.

For now at least McCoy is getting the nod

The thing I saw with Case was that he did lock on to Shipley a little bit. That could come back to bit him. Hopefully, with a weeks full of 1st team snaps, that will correct itself a little bit.

They'll be doing the rotation thing I'm sure. It's like the Tebow/Leak situation. Start off with the pocket QB and then mix it up with the running QB. McCoy starts but I'm sure it will be a 50/50 split or 60/40

McCoy sure is getting lots of props for one rollout with a 5 yard pass on 4th down and a pass that would have gotten Shipley killed against OU's defense. I just don't see what all the hoopla is about. I would hope Ash gets to at least try a couple passes against UCLA.

I like both guys. McCoy at least according to what has been said showed a lot more consistency of moving the offense during the summer and in the Orange/White intersquad game. I don't know if I would say that McCoy has anything locked up but it was clear that both McCoy and Ash gave spark to the Texas offense when they came it.

I don't object to either guy. I want to see what Malcolm can do with 20+ carries. A good running game cures a lot of issues with pass protection. With that said, having a QB(Gilbert) that stares down receivers is a good way to get receivers injuried and cause turnovers as we have seen. I'm looking forward to see what these starters bring! I'm ready to see what Diggs can do against the pass before we get ou!

I'll ask her if she can get it for me. Funny because I was talking with her this morning and ask her about her nephew I did not know it was Diggs I thought his last name would be Jammer. She said different dads.
