View Full Version : Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers, who has inherited the top QB in league title?
Romo 2 Austin

With P.Mannings injury, he has got to fall.. He has to. Who is now the #1 QB in the NFL? Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers?.. You could make a case for a Philip Rivers, Drew Brees, Ben Roethlisberger or Tony Romo, but i'm confident 95% of non-homer voters would go either Rodgers or Brady, so here is the discussion.
I vote Tom Brady, no doubt he is #1 in my mind.

ill go any freaking body that plays behind the patriots oline. seriously i could find an open man if i had 7 seconds every time. ive said it many many times, any NFL caliber QB could do what brady does behind his oline. the plays get to him fast then he gets to line up, read the D and check into the perfect play and sit back and wait for his guys to get open. Romo on the other hand gets to the line with 10 seconds left then has to tell somebody he needs to be and snaps the ball with one second left and is running for his life the whole time. matt cassel went 11-5.

Rodgers. He can do more than what Brady can. Give both of them a clean pocket and all day to throw, they'll both look impressive. Give either of them a crappy OLine and Brady starts feeling the heat and it affects his throws (see his recent playoff games). Rodgers at least has the mobility and is one of the best running QBs in the league.

If you're giving me the choice between the two moving forward I would go Rodgers.
Given the choice with both having the same numbers of years in the tank, I go Brady.

I would like to have seen Tom Brady play without a top offensive line for his entire career. Watching him sit in the pocket for five minutes waiting on a receiver to open up last night was just plain stupid. I could do that blind folded.
Brady is an extremely accurate passer. The last time I remember him under duress was against the Jets in the playoffs. He got sacked 4 times and his QB rating was sub 90. Tony Romo just got sacked 4 times by that same defense and still managed to put up a 101.9 rating.
Brady's career has heavily benefited from having a great offensive line his entire career.

early last season Brady was not so good before Mankins came back and solidified the O line. That was the main reason Kraft shut up and made the big offer to Mankins.
The key to the Jets beating the pats in the PLayoffs was that they got a lot of pressure on Brady. Brady does not react well when that happens. just like in the SB that the Giants D won; they got to him all game long and the pats who had been averaging 30+ points a game only got 17.
I predict that any team that can get pressure on Brady will prove that Brady is NOT that good coping with it.

My answer as a Pats fan is "Let's see who does well this year".
There is nothing to compare this year, except one game. Let's play the games. I know we have lots of holes in the secondary. Big holes.
Going forward, then there is a choice -- obviously long term Brady only has a few years left. I think Rodgers is a good young QB, but I never look at the so called "great ones" based upon one year. Let's look down the road in 5 years and see the answer.
But in terms of past years, Brady is going down as one of the best. And we had a LOUSY OL for years -- not sure we even have a great one now. They have not done so well with teams with a great DL. Thus, our first round draft pick on the OL. We were playing the Dolphins last night.
One of the things that Brady does best is read a defense and react well - which makes the job of the OL easier. And no QB can react to a defense that doesn't even give a QB time to get in the pocket.
And other than Moss he has never had a really good "long field" receiver. Sure Welker is good, but he is a slot receiver for the most part. Actually Welker is great for such a small guy.
And I also remember the year when Bledsoe went down and this young kid named Brady takes over. A losing team at that time, and turned the year into a SB - the same team. And then the rest. Bledsoe could not read a defense if his life depended on it -- and almost never even looked at a secondary receiver.
So all the arguments that Brady is only good because (and the list) ----- are ridiculous. You still have to execute the play. The Pats have done so well in the last decade for one main reason - Brady. That era will end soon enough -- too soon for me. We got lucky, plain and simple. And no one knows that better than me.

Brady.
But Rodgers is great too. Brees and Rivers aren't too shabby either.
I guess Ben gets in the mix somehow...and after that...gasp...you have the guy getting shelled around the league the last two days...our very our Romo.

Relatively speaking. I mean, the guy was still playing at a very high level.
When Mankins came back, his game was out of this world.

If I am picking a QB to win for the next decade -- Rogers. Easy choice.

Brady, the guy is a surgeon. What was the streak he just had broken? 350 pass attempts without an INT??? Geebus..
Anyone that says Rodgers is better because Brady has a better Oline is full of crap. If you go that route, you better say that Barry Sanders is better than Emmitt because of Emmitts oline...and I know not a single Cowboy fan would/should say that.

I used to rank Brady behind Peyton because I've never seen anyone come close to what Peyton does in terms of operating an offense and controlling the game mentally from his position.
But, Brady has literally put his game into God-Mode a couple of times. Obviously his 50 TD season but the second half of last year is also unreal.
Two times he's finished a season with a TD to INT ratio fo 9 to 1.
If you look at Brady's last 3 Full season (excluding the year he was out all year, so 07, 09 and 10) his TD to INT ratio is 114 to 25.
We're talking nearly 5 to 1. If you throw in this season it's 118 to 26. I'd bet he finishes this season with a 4-year (5-year if you count 2008) stretch with a 5 to 1 ratio.
This is absolutely phenomenal. I'd be hard pressed to think a single QB has ever had an equivalent stretch.
His completion % over that time is well over 65%.
Tom Brady is without a doubt the best QB who has ever played. I still think that Peyton is the most impressive QB I have ever seen and that he controls the game like nobody ever has but Tom Brady plays that position better than anyone ever has.
The guy is 34 years old, too. I heard Gruden say he wanted to keep playing for a while.
If he continues this level of play for the next few years, you have to start mentioning him as possibly the best football player ever, not just QB.

I still have not put Brady over Montana. Montana, a guy that used to put me in "awe". I used to love to watch him play. Amazing. True he had Rice, but such a presence on the field. The guy was just awesome. Montana has always been my "standard" for best QB. Brady will however go down as one of the best -- for too many reasons to list. And I smile when I think he found his way to my team.
Manning, I know he is a great QB, but there is something about the guy I just don't like. The whining, the theatrics, the falling apart when the going got tough (not always, but way too many times). But when he was on, the guy you wanted to drive the ball down the field. But for me, I was always much happier with Brady -- as an all around QB, more consistent, level-headed.
Some of the best games I have ever seen were between Indy and the Pats. Every year we used to play. And you would just sit on the edge of your seat - usually always one hell of a game. I am going to miss those -- but I think Manning is coming back. Had to go look, check out how close in 2009, 2010. Just the way those games were. Nail biting, but fun. Nothing worse than a boring game!!!
Nov. 15, 2009 Indianapolis Indianapolis Colts 35-34 Nov. 21, 2010 Foxborough New England Patriots 31-28
Just happy we have football. No, I don't think we have a chance to win the SB with our secondary. Nope, but do I care?? No. As long as we are competitive, that is all I care about. Still the best game in town.

And one more point, before I forget.
Romo could be much better QB if he just stopped making "knucklehead" mistakes.
If I was his coach I would tell him over and over, and over again -- think on every play. Concentrate on every single down. If you don't have a play where success is at least at 75%, eat it -- or throw it away.
The guy just needs some serious focus -- and if he can't do it on his own, I would be on his case on the sidelines. OK Tony, focus. One big mistake can cost you the game.
Just my thoughts, although you folks might disagree. Just an "objective" opinion from someone without a vested interest in Romo.

Rodgers is surrounded by phenomenal talent at the WR position. The Packers draft a WR in the 2nd round almost every year to give Rodgers exceptional talents as his 3rd, 4th and 5th reads. James Jones could start for a lot of NFL teams, and he's the 5th best WR on the Packers and their 7th best receiving target. It's nice when you have an organization that is completely stacked at WR and will still go out and draft a Randall Cobb in the 2nd round who can take a routine slant to the house at anytime.
Brady definitely does more with less. No other QB in the league is throwing for 500 yards with Wes Welker and Deion Branch as his starting WRs.

Does it matter? Is a dropped INT the same as an INT? No. It's just another incomplete pass. Try again.

I think Rogers in tremendous.... however I agree with you that the Patriot's receiving corp. isn't half of what the Packers have.
Brady is 34 and Rogers is 27. I could see a day down the road where Rogers is as a good as Brady.

I don't get those that they would take one any day over the other. Obviouisly there are going to be preferences, but I don't see either is clearly the right choice over the other. The one thing that separates Brady a bit is more history behind him, but there really is no way to sneeze at either guy.
If you're giving me the choice between the two moving forward I would go Rodgers.

I always laugh at these kinds of comments. Sure Brady has had some good O-lines, but we are how many years, and how many Super Bowls and how many playoff appearances and wins into his career at this point? Comeon, the guy is easily among the top few QB's ever.
I'd take Rogers, Rivers, Brees or Romo over Brady.

Again, how many years, and Super Bowl wins, and career wins and playoff appearances and wins has he been a part of? Kind of hard to look at all that and dismiss him as folding under pressure.
