After reading this article,

http://www.tulsaworld.com/sportsextra/article.aspx?subjectid=203&articleid=20110915_203_B1_OLDFAS164035

I started mulling over ideas that would save the Big-XII, while still allowing Texas to keep what their doing with the Longhorn network.

This is what I came up with:

Big XII North:
Boise St.
BYU
Mizzou
Kansas
Kansas St.
Iowa St.

Big XII Texas:
Texas
TCU
Texas Tech
Houston
Baylor
SMU

To me, this is still a very strong football conference. I could think of very legitimate reasons why all of those schools would want to come or stay in a rebuilt Big XII.The King pin would be Texas, they could keep their network and still be playing several natural rivals every year.

Not being from Big XII country myself, I know that there are several Big XII fans on here, so what do you guys think of this idea?

I like your North. I'd like ou and OSU to stay. KSU also has a network up and running. I think Mizzou has one or working to get one.

Add two teams to the Big 12 and four teams to the Big East. Kick the leftovers back down to the FCS and bring in a playoff.

Or get rid of all conferences and bring in playoffs so every team has a chance to win a national championship instead of just the team in one of the bloated conferences.

How would you determine who gets into the playoffs?

Start with records then strength of schedule

Anything would be better than the BSC

That would be the best, but based on what I have read lately, it seems very likely that OU and OSU are headed to the Pac-12, so my idea was based on them leaving the Big XII.

I used to love the old conferences when they actually stood for something. The new conferences that are being created make no historical or geographical sense. That is part of the reason why I like my idea, the Big XII North would be for solid, small state schools, while the Big XII Texas would bring back some of the good old fashioned Texas rivalries.

So far that is correct. Hopefully before ou leaves, they will work something out to stay.

Agreed. I am from the Mountain West area, so I would love to see BYU and Boise get into the Big XII, but most of all I am college football fan that grew up watching the old rivalry games from the SWC and then the Big XII conferences and I hate those old traditions to be lost.

There are too many teams for that to work and the snub list would be huge. If you have six conferences or even eight you can take the conference champions and have a three week playoff format that is better than the BCS. Winning would be the only thing that matters, no voting, no style points and the non-conference games wouldn't factor so we would see more big games like LSU/Oregon.

Boise would be a great addition! BYU wouldn't be bad. If ou was to leave I hope they could keep the Red River Rivalry intact and around the Texas State Fair.

I think the RRR is worth too much to both schools and the metroplex to get rid of it. Arkansas vs TAMU is rumored to be worth $5 million a year for each school so the RRR has to at least match that.

Losing the Red River Rivalry would be awful. Losing the Nebraska/Ok game was bad enough.

It's bad enough that it sounds like the traditional thanksgiving night game won't be played! I hate to lose y'all!

It appears that tradition only matters to fans 10 years of age and older.

If OU and OSU leave the Big 12 is dead what you have listed there is a terrible conference that will be dominated by Texas and everyone will be at Texas whim

Boise State and BYU can hold their own. I posted something very similar to this a few days ago in another thread. My idea was to combine the MW and the Big12. I think you might as well go with 16 teams here. 6 and 7 doesn't really match. Should try to bring in TCU also.

Not anything. A return to the old system would be worse than the current BCS.

I think that of all the conferences, the Big 10 is the most desirable situation for Texas. ESPN and it's relationship with the ACC is fueling a lot of the Texas to the ACC talk but I don't really believe that could work. It would be a powerful conference to be sure.

Football:

Miami, Florida State, UNC, Texas (OU if they stayed).

Basketball:

UNC, Duke, Texas, Kansas.

Baseball:

Texas, FSU, Miami

It could be a sports powerhouse stronger then any of the other conferences.

There is talk that the Big 12 has reached out to Arkansas and BYU already and if OU goes, Pitt, Louisville and WV. Of those, I really only like WV. I guess the Big 12 is afraid to add more Texas schools for fear of being forced to take them all. At least, that's what is being reported but I think the Big 12 are idiots if they don't look at TCU.

I would add BYU, TCU, Boise St, Notre Dame, AFA and SMU if I had my choices. That would be one hell of a great conference IMO. If OU and OSU want to stay, then that's good. If not, then just cut AF and SMU and keep it at 12.

Thanksgiving weekend won't be the same without it. I hope both schools can put their big boy pants back on and figure a way to keep it around.

texas in the acc would be cool, it gets our foot in the door with florida athletes which could be huge.

It won't be as good as the old Big XII, but it still a very solid conference. Texas would be the flagship, buy I also think Boise, TCU, and BYU, among others would give them plenty of competition. No way they win that conference last year and probably not this year.

Well with the news that TX/TT/OU/OSU are going to the pac 10 or 12 or 16, the big XII is dead. Where do you guys think Kansas/Kansas State end up?

If I was them I would start gathering the best teams that are left out to form a new conference. Build something that is too powerful to be left out of a playoff structure.

Take the leftovers from the Big East and Big 12 first of all. When the dust settles it may be left with South Florida, Cincinnati, Louisville, Missouri, Baylor, Kansas, Kansas State, and Iowa State. Add the service academies, BYU, TCU, Boise State, Houston and SMU. This list has four teams in the top 25 and a few others who are getting votes. Not a super power by any means, but definitely a group of teams that cannot be left out.

East
Cincinnati
Louisville
South Florida
Army
Navy
Kansas
Kansas State
Missouri

West
Boise State
BYU
Air Force
Baylor
TCU
SMU
Houston
Iowa State
