SAN FRANCISCO — Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo had already attempted to sneak onto the field once with broken ribs, so he took a more direct approach with coach Jason Garrett late in the third quarter. The Niners had just taken a 21-14 lead after capitalizing on backup quarterback Jon Kitna's second interception of the half.

Romo, who suffered the injury on the third play of the game, came up with a pretty logical argument as he tried to jog past Garrett.

"At some point I'm going to play with this thing, so why not now?" Garrett recalled Romo asking him.

If the trainers said he couldn't hurt himself worse, and the guy can play through the pain, you let him play. Kitna was driving us straight to 0-2 city, and we couldn't afford that.
