with the #11 pick you should pretty much be guaranteed the best or 2nd best player at his respective position in the draft. what exactly is shawne merriman.. a DE or OLB? everyone just assumes he can play LB in the nfl, while he was a DE in college. has this guy ever dropped back in coverage during his college career? that seems like a hell of a risk to me, regardless of his physical skills.
and looking closely at this draft site which is usually very accurate regarding the draft and nfl scouting. http://www.draftshowcase.com/05DefensiveEnds.htm
it says merriman is 3rd round talent. mainly because im betting hes a risk. he might get man-handled by nfl tackles and might not be able to handle playing pass coverage.
i'd like more of a sure thing with #11 to be honest, our 2nd 1st round pick maybe.. but it seems like we could get an elite true linebacker with daryl blackstock or kevin burnett maybe in the 2nd.
merrimans stock seems to be rising more during the offseason that it was during the season, he snuck up the draft boards quite a bit from when the season first ended. thats not a good thing.

I don't know enough about Merriman to have an opinion on him.
But I do agree with you on the sure thing comment.
I would rather take a more conservative approach and get a gauranteed hit rather than take a huge swing for the fence and run the risk of striking out.
I think this has been Jones problem in the draft since Jimmy left. He gambles to damn much. Go for the sure thing !!!!

this is a strange site they say he's third round player but if you look at their mock draft they have him as his stock is rising at the 7th pick....They sound confused
Here's a copy of their first 11
RD Pick Team Selection
1 1 49ers Aaron Rodgers, QB, California *If they can't get a trade down, this is likely the pick. Even though they like Rattay, it might be a situation where they are pressured into this pick.
1 2 Dolphins Ronnie Brown, RB, Auburn *The Dolphins need a RB first and foremost and Brown showed at the combine that he is worthy of a top 5 selection.
1 3 Browns Derrick Johnson, OLB, Texas *Johnson is an elite defender and talks of him sliding out of the top 10 are ludicrous. He's as close to a sure thing as there is in this draft.
1 4 Bears Braylon Edwards, WR, Michigan *Yeah, they signed Muhsin Muhammed, but he's an older receiver and youngsters Justin Gage and Bobby Wade have yet to show that they are capable starters.
1 5 Buccaneers Mike Williams, WR, Southern Cal *The Bucs don't have another starter opposite Michael Clayton. Williams is a Tampa product and would give the Bucs another great young wideout.
1 6 Titans Antrel Rolle, CB, Miami *The Titans cut their best cover corner in Samari Rolle, so they bring in another Rolle in Antrel, who has been one of the country's most consistent players.
1 7 Vikings Shawne Merriman, DE, Maryland *Merriman's stock is soaring. The Vikings could use him as an edge rusher opposite Kenechi Udeze and give themselves two great bookends.
1 8 Cardinals Cedric Benson, RB, Texas *It comes down to Benson or Cadillac Williams here. The Cards already have a guy in Marcel Shipp who can catch the ball out of the backfield, so they get a pounder in Benson here.
1 9 Redskins Carlos Rogers, CB, Auburn *The Skins lost Fred Smoot in free agency and Rogers' stock is soaring after he ran a blazing 4.31 at the combine.
1 10 Lions Marcus Spears, DE, LSU *The Lions ideally would want to trade down here, but if they can't find a trade partner, it seems that Spears will be their guy.
1 11 Cowboys Shaun Cody, DT, USC *The Cowboys would love for Spears or Merriman to fall here, but neither do, so they take Cody and pair him up with Laroi Glover. Cody can also kick out to end in some situations.

eh, nobody reads the draft zone. a mod can delete one or the other. but i think the reason merrimans stock is so high is simply because of his workouts and the fact that the linebacker class of this draft isn't impressive. besides DJ theres not any true first round lb's. and that seems like naive grounds to take a player like merriman so early.

I do. Don't post much, but I troll through there quite often. And there are a few dedicated draft-niks on the board.

Would clog the main forum, that's why they created the draft zone in the first place. No it doesn't get much pub. But there's alot of good info in it IMO. I don't follow college football all that closely and the draft zone gives good info on draft prospects.

THANKS ! I will have to start trolling there myself.
And I'm sure I could find Ben in the political zone. :)

Yeah. You gotta watch your step in the political zone. Got some fiery debates going on in there.

There is no "sure" thing prospects in this draft, and none of the OLB/DE types have seperated themselves from the pack yet. As for Merriman, he played both linebacker and defensive end in college, so it's not like he would be completely out of his element in either position.
I'm not very high on blackstock, he is a one trick pony and a definite liability against the run.

but, do you think he warrants a #11 pick? which would equate to the fact that hes the 11th best player coming out of college this year. i just dont see it.

What's your point? Terrell Suggs was a DE at Arizona State, and now is a 3-4 pass rushing LB.

are we really comparing terrell suggs to shawne merriman? give me a break here please. terrell suggs had 44 sacks in college., merriman is half that with 22. both entered the draft as juniors too. i'd take terrell suggs at #11 obviously but not merriman.

i guess this all boils down to how weak this draft is. no way in hell would shawne merriman fall in the top 10 last year, he would be 2nd round talent. and jp losman would be a top 5 pick this year, not the #22. what a bad year to have two firsts in, i hope we trade one of our firsts for a first next year and pray for a better draft class.

Jem88's mock first 11 picks was well-written, thoughtful and even provocative. Sadly it only elicited 3 responses. Not sure if they're in the draft zone or not, but the jem88-written pieces on the drafting success at certain positions (such as LB, WR and CB) was also deeply moving. Enjoy!

Merriman at 11 is still a big stretch to me. I'd love him at 20 but i doubt he'd be there. He just seems like one of those workout warriors who looks good in tights, and skyrockets up the draft. I remember him being projected as late first and now all of a sudden hes top 10. this guy really scares me, but at the same time has a lot of potential. it would be a really big gamble at 11.
