Warren Sapp joined Ben and Skin on KESN-FM 103.3. Here are some highights.
On the DeMarcus Ware 'can't lead ants to a picnic' comment? Has he changed your your mind at all?
Warren Sapp: He's great player. But how can you sit in a room when it's you, Anthony Spencer and Rafliff as the defensive linemen, and the film is on and Anthony Spencer comes out a year later and says, 'Yeah, I used to take plays off.' That would never happen around Lawrence Taylor, Derrick Brooks, myself, Reggie White. We wouldn't allow it. That's what I'm talking about being a leader. When you're in a meeting room and something on the film just doesn't fit your eyes, you gotta say something. If you can't lead your unit, don't expect to lead anyone else.

I don't question Ware's leadership by example but he's never been the guy that's gonna get in a teammates face. Luckily for us, Lee seems to be stepping into that field general role for us which is great.

Warren you shouldn't be in the same sentence with Reggie White and LT. That said you really werent in the same league as DWare either so, basically shut up. Some folks DO IT, they dont have to say it.
Warren Sapp...still a moron.

Whatever... Sapp took plays off when he was in Oakland, so he's a hypocrite.

If Sapp gets Ware to step up and be more vocal, more power to him. This team needs people willing to lead by more than example. Tony and Ware both seem to be making that effort this season. I can't see how that's a bad thing.

warren sapp is definitely one of the greatest d linemen of all time...love him or hate him. And some players need a kick in the tail, not just a great example to follow.....i love d ware, and maybe that isnt his M.O which is fine. But it needs to come from somewhere...if it comes from sean lee, then that's fantastic. We also need it on offense....who will it come from? all our playmakers aren't really those types of guys....

This is one of the few times I agree with Sapp on anything... Ware and Romo must continue to show growth in leadership.

Sapp also said Kitna was killing it when he went in the game.....

I agree. I've been critical of Ware in the past. Not that he's not a very good player or a well-rounded player. I just didn't think he played up to his "hype" both down the stretch and as a leader in the mold of a Ray Lewis, Brian Dawkins or LT.
Now, maybe he's not that type of leader. Maybe I'm being too critical of him, I'll admit. But this is a matter of styles and perception. I think most of us (well, many of us) want someone who'll get in your face. That's not Ware. But that be more our "problem" than Ware's.
As for Romo, I think he took a huge step as a leader in rallying the Cowboys under the circumstances that he did and by getting into Jesse Holley's grill and, in essence, telling him to be ready for his moment because he's coming to him.
That was the quintessential picture of leadership and will be etched in my mind from here out. "I need you. I need you to be ready. Be ready because I'm coming to you. Don't disappointed me."

I would love for Ware to be a in your face leader because it's needed in the NFL... You are dealing with violent sport. Romo looked like Brady out there, he really showed something special.

Kitna was killing our chances in the game. Isn't that what Sapp meant?

I think it's funny that Sapp mentioned this.
Like he was sitting next to Ware all throughout the offseason and knows exactly what conversations took place between any of the players, especially Ware, and Spencer.
If ever there was a hypothetically-based confirmation bias, this is it.

Nope. It was pro-Kitna's performance

Uh, yes he was.
I will respectfully disagree. Ware has double digit sacks every year with the exception of his rookie year and this one. My point remains the same, I would be thrilled if he was the outspoken type, but I think his production speaks volumes by itself. FWIW I do think Sapp was great just not in the same class.

I'm amazed at people's perception of Ware's leadership when none of them have been in the lockerroom with him, or in the huddle, or on the practice field. Why is there this media effort to tear down the leaders of the Cowboys. Carter rags on Romo, but doesn't say anything about similar quarterbacks guilty of the same action. Sapp is lucky he has a gig on NFL channel, but it seems to me he ought to be concentrating on the Buccaneers. They were lucky to go to 1-1.

My biggest question to Sapp would be how does he know Ware hasn't been that vocal leader behind closed doors in the film room? Is Sapp on the Cowboys staff & none of us know it? His jibberish is nothing more then pure speculation on his part unless he was in film room meetings with Ware & Company. We are talking about grown men here & there is only so much you can do as a player to try & get your teammates to give it their all.

Sapp had 16.5 sacks as a TACKLE in 2000 or 2001....the guy was a stud. I respect the hell out of Ware, but Sapp was definately in his league.

Ware is an outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense, who is supposed to collect sacks. who is supposed to get sacks. Sapp was a defense tackle who had double digits sacks at least four times in his career. A defense tackle isn't supposed to get a lot of sacks. But Sapp did that. In fact, he has the second highest sack totals among defensive tackles in NFL history.
Sack was a terror both stuffing the run and sacking the quarterback. And I hihgly expect him to be in the Hall of Fame.
You may not like him as a commentator, but Sapp was indeed in Ware's league when he was at the prime of his career.

I was reading Romo's response to Sapp and it kind of made me laugh to think about Sapp criticizing Romo but more specifically, criticizing Ware.
I mean, I love how Sapp will criticize Ware for Spencer admitting he took some plays or games off.
It's just so ironic that he would say anything at all.
Where was Sapp when Randy Moss took two entire seasons off in Oakland?
