The 41-year-old decided it was time to end his playing career after 21 years in the NHL, making the announcement on his Facebook page Wednesday, saying: "I've come to the decision that it's time to retire as a player from the NHL."

Modano confirmed the retirement to ESPNDallas.com shortly after that.

"I think I knew in my heart I was done after last season," Modano said. "I had a harder time coming to grips with it than I thought I would. Part of me wanted to play it out and see if anybody had called in July. When that didn't happen, I figured that's pretty much it.

The Stars are for sale. You could buy them then hire him! :)

I got to meet him at the Texas Sports Hall of Fame awards. I was there to meet Micheal Irvin who was being inducted. I went to the awards as a guest of John McClain and as he did interview with each inductee he would introduce me to them. Others inductees including Ray Childress, Spike Dykes, Mia Hamm and Abner Haynes.

The only reason I like hockey is because of him. Outstanding career. Hopefully he does come work for the Stars.

Same!

He had a great career, and has a hot wife. I am sure he'll be happy with life after hockey!

Good for him on a stellar career. Not many American-born players these days see the kind of success he did, despite the sour ending last year with the Wings. I'm equally glad he retired as a Dallas Star. Looking at his tweets, I imagine that he will take some time off to relax but I would also see him joining Dallas in a front office role sometime soon too, which is pretty awesome if you ask me!

Poor John...he takes alot of crap from Houston sports fans. I only have emailed him but he is so nice to answer me and always very cordial in his responses. I have always loved Modano...such a great player. ..very cool tp have such a great experience!
