The Cowboys rank fourth in total defense and lead the league in sacks. That's a far cry from last season when they ranked as the worst in team history. But it's not far off the 2009 team that was one of the franchise's best.

Linebacker DeMarcus Ware, who leads the league in sacks with four, said this year's unit has the potential to be even better than two years ago.

Unlike last year's team that gave up 436 points, the most in Cowboys history, this year's team is on pace to give up 408 points ... the second most in Cowboys history.

OK, that's not quite fair, since we're on pace to give up eight return TDs, whereas last year we only gave up ... seven return TDs and a safety. Hmm.

I have to admit that I, like Ware, feel a lot better about this year's D, but I sure would like to see those points allowed go down at some point.
