View Full Version : HELP: I think my laptop crashed

This is kinda bummer. I think my laptop crashed. As i was booting up my dell lattitude d620 i recieved no welcome screen and a double beep. Tried again... Same thing. Can someone tell me what the double beep means? I am posting this message my not-so-internet-friendly nokia phone, so it rough post.

Is the air bag deployed?

If so, it definitely crashed. Sorry I can't be more help.

Are you getting the Dell startup screen? If so while booting hit the F12 key and run a diagnostic. That will tell you if it's a system problem.

Very likely you have a bad stick of RAM or one of them isnt seated properly. If you have more than one stick in there take one out and try to boot. If it does the same thing switch with the other and try again. I am pretty sure the Dell Diagnostics utility also has a memory test in it. The link included above will walk you through that.

Unless your are fluent in a dozen different languages to make it through phone support.

This guy works for MS but I'm pretty sure he handled my Dell call some years back.

Very likely you have a bad stick of RAM or one of them isnt seated properly. If you have more than one stick in there take one out and try to boot. If it does the same thing switch with the other and try again. I am pretty sure the Dell Diagnostics utility also has a memory test in it. The link included above will walk you through that.

That was my problem last month. I had to keep pulling them out like bad teeth until i found the right one.

It might if it was for the correct machine. A GX 620 is a desktop not a laptop.

These darn PC's! My next computer is going to be an Apple. [\stir angry pot]:-D well, i tried the f12 thang but the laptop wont boot far enough to use the diagnostics as prescribed above. Anyone have any other ideas?

Two short beeps is usually memory failure.

If you laptop is no longer under warranty, checkout 4allmemory.com (http://www.4allmemory.com/memory/dell-latitude-d620/). (link is directly to the memory for your laptop) They sell Dell compatible memory for cheap. Don't even try to buy it from Dell as they will treat you like RuthlessRaper would treat you.

Memory is usually installed in sets of two. Make sure when / if you buy memory to buy a single set of two, or two single dimms.

With this model of laptop they can be installed in single chips. It has two chips. One is easy to get to from the bottom of the laptop. The other is a little tougher for someone who hasn't done it before. It's under the keyboard.

I would suggest pulling the chip from the back of the laptop first. All you have to do is unscrew one "door" and pop the chip out.

OK funny story coming. I got home from work and thought I'd give the ole Dell a shot at booting. So I turned it on and I'm waiting.... BUT nothing, not even the two beeps like last night.

My land lord walks in, a 77 year old lady, who can't always remember whats she talking about so I never know where the conversation is going to go, just what ever pops into her head is what we talk about.

One thing led to another and about five minutes into the conversation I picked up the laptop (still not booted) and closed the screen to show her the crack where it had been run over by a car a couple of years ago and set it back down and pushed the screen back open and bingo, it came on. :D

The old close the screen-flip it over-turn it right side up again trick.
