If Rivera has complications and cannot play anymore, how much money is he guaranteed? I hope we dont have to take a hit for a guy who can't even see the field... I'm not familiar with contract structure, somebody fill me in.

I don't know what is guaranteed but here is the breakdown on the contract.

Updating previous reports, the five-year deal OG Marco Rivera signed with the Dallas Cowboys has base salaries of $700,000 (2005), $1.875 million (2006), $2 million (2007), $3 million (2008) and $3 million (2009).

Man, if he knew about this surgery and didn't inform the team before signing that contract, he should be sued for liable. That's outright stealing !!!

If Rivera doesn't play a down for Dallas....the cap hit has two scenarios:

1st scenario:
2.5 million in 2005.
then 7.2 million in 2006 if cut before June 1st 2006.

2nd scenario:
2.5 million in 2005.
then 3.6 million in 2006 if cut after June 1st 2006
then 3.6 million in 2007.

Anyway you cut it...it would be just under a 10 million dollar hit - which would make it a very expensive lesson on signing FA over 30 with a large signing bonus. Parcells just loves em at that stage in their careers.

It depends on the Language in the contract.......He may have to repay the signing bonus and none of count against the team if he never plays with us..
this was taken from the askthecommish.com which by the way I think ADAM co owns and is named AL Lackner....Do a google search on his name and make your own conclusion...Al helps many Fantasy teams on the NET figure the teams salary cap he has been on the Radio explaning the Cap he is a Math wiz and is none as the "CAP GURU" Kinda sounds like what Adam does

What is to prevent a player from signing a huge contract, commanding a large (guaranteed) signing bonus, then never playing a single down in the NFL?

Answer: I call this the "Barry Sanders Rule".

Due to the Salary Cap, owners are now investing a greater amount of money up front for players in the form of guaranteed signing bonuses. Thus, the owners must try to protect their investments by including language in the contract that calls for a player to return a portion of the signing bonus to the team if the player “fails or refuses” to practice or play with the team.

In certain situations, a team will be repaid some of the signing bonus it paid to a player (i.e., a refund), or a team will fail to pay part of a signing bonus that was already allocated toward team salary. If this happens, the amount previously included in team salary will be added to the team’s Salary Cap in the next year.

Are you guys reading things that I'm not....everything I've seen says he's expected to be ready in time for training camp.

He is!

I think folks are just a little worried because the same thing was said about Woodson last year!

Rivera will be fine!

There just speculating on if he doesn't come back....And having had almost the exact same back surgery I can tell you that its no given he will. every doctor that has ever done a surgery where things went as expected has come out and said something positive......They said Woody would be back last season. It will depend on Rivera and how he heals and how bad he wants to come back......
