http://www.bgr.com/2011/10/03/sprint-guarantees-to-buy-over-20-billion-in-iphones-from-apple-launching-the-iphone-5-exclusively/

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Sprint has entered into an agreement with Apple (https://twitter.com/#!/dkberman/status/120924521782980608) to purchase over $20 billion worth of iPhones over the next four years — that’s around 30 million iPhones. It’s said that Sprint won’t even break even on the transaction until 2014, which is surely a huge risk on Sprint’s part, but why? I have been going back and forth for weeks with one of my incredibly solid industry contacts on a piece of information that I couldn’t really process at first — information that is so unbelievable, even from a source this solid, that I couldn’t report it. With this new WSJ report on an Apple/Sprint deal, however, it doesn’t look so crazy. Hit the break for more.
I have been told that Sprint will be getting the iPhone 5 — yes the real iPhone 5, not the iPhone 4S — as an exclusive. And it will be a 4G WiMAX device. AT&T and Verizon would launch the iPhone 4S and get the iPhone 5 some time in the first quarter of next year as an LTE device. Globally, the iPhone 5 might be available as a 4G HSPA+ device.
In this scenario, the iPhone 4S Apple will introduce tomorrow will feature the following:

A low voltage Apple A5 CPU (it won’t be the same as the iPad 2 chip, clock for clock).
Updated front and back camera sensors. FaceTime HD in the front, 8-megapixel 1080p HD video recording in the back.
Multiband 3G Qualcomm chipset — North American & International GSM/UMTS/HSPA bands for AT&T and Global carriers, North American CDMA & International GSM/UMTS/HSPA bands for Verizon and Sprint.
NFC support.
Metal or “premium” plastic on the back case. And here is what my source said about the iPhone 5 that will launch as a Sprint exclusive:

Faster CPU.
Larger 4-inch screen, similar to LG’s NOVA display but with a higher resolution.
1GB of RAM.
Slightly larger design overall, but thinner and with a larger battery.
32GB of storage.
iPhone 5 exclusive software and APIs (Assistant).
Dedicated Assistant button, possibly integrated with the new home button, “think gestures or a two-stage button like a camera shutter key). For more click the link.

It should. WiMax is a joke.

4G LTE is the future. And Sprint's fallback network for standard coverage is iffy at best.

Not sure if it's so smart.. If Sprint got exclusivity for the entire run of the iPhone 5 then I said alright, good idea. Or if it is for every new iPhone for the next 4 years for the first few months, good plan. If it's only for the iPhone 5 for 3 months, what the hell where they thinking.

30 million phone promise for just a couple of months exclusive to Sprint? Most people will just wait for their preferred company to get it.

Sprint is grasping at straws here.

I won't get one if it doesn't come to ATT.

Unless Sprint can find a way to match my 24% monthly discount, I'll keep what I have.

iPhone is sweet but I'm not going to be switching carriers and bending over on a monthly basis to worship the thing.

depends who you work for they offer a ton of discounts for companies. I love my sprint service I love UNLIMITED everything and I get 24% off of my bill. Basically I get 3 phones for about for 120 bucks a month unlimited everything except land lines. Also where my house is all carriers get terrible service so sprint sent me a tower for my house and now service is perfect. I will be getting the Iphone when it comes out for sprint I have been waiting for them to step up.

20,000,000,000.

They'll make that regardless of which service provider they choose.

If they choose them all, they'll probably make 10X more than that.

The article says 30M iPhones on a 4 year exclusive contract. Unless we're to believe that Apple won't come out with a new one by now and then, Sprint somehow managed to get an exclusive deal for the iPhone 6 and likely iPhone 7. That or they somehow managed to commit to buy phones that will be generations old by the time the 4 years is up.

Doubtful.

In fact, I'm going to say damn near impossible.

Knew it. Impossible.

I just read NYCs post and the article. It's a 4-5 month head start. Makes sense because there's no way in hell that Apple is going to lose that kind of money.

They sold 20M in the 3rd quarter of 2011 alone.

http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2011/07/19Apple-Reports-Third-Quarter-Results.html

The Company sold 20.34 million iPhones in the quarter, representing 142 percent unit growth over the year-ago quarter.

In the last 4 years, they've solid 130M iPhones.

I'll impatiently wait for ATT to get it.

Considering I was working for AT&T when the original iPhone launched just over four years ago, I can't see sprint doing this just to grab millions of new subscribers as much as I can see them doing it to maintain a steady base and also use it as a bargaining point for lending. Hence the not making money unil 2013-2014 era.

They are tied to the hip with Clearwire/clear and they own almost all of the coverage. They are both hitched to wimax and owning it is huge! Regardless of what you have read or heard owning wimax coverage will make them relevant again. It just will take time.....

I'm going to guess what Sprint has an exclusive on is the 4S, which is akin to to what the 3GS was to the iPhone 3G. I think there will still be a legit iPhone 5... or at least I hope so.

Nope, Sprint is getting the iPhone5 when AT&T and Verizon will only have the iPhone4S. From what it sounds like, Verizon and AT&T will get the iPhone 5 sometime (after?) the first quarter of next year.

What is the S4 anyhow? The iPhone4 hardware with software upgrades? (maybe iPhone4 hardware with iPhone5 software?)Yes. The key hardware upgrade is their dual-antenna where the phone can switch from one to the other even during a phone call. So they claim a significant upgrade to reception and download speeds which are equal to (or better than) any 4G phone. Whether or not it can do what they promise is a whole other matter.

Plus there's the usual faster processor, better camera, better graphics deal. iOS5 on October 12 for all of us. Hopefully that's less of a disaster than when they updated the 3G to iOS4.

The software, Siri, looks kinda cool but I don't really get into voice controls so I doubt I'll use it much. I just HATE the way my iPhone4 activated voice control whenever I am working out.

http://www.beatweek.com/news/9561-iphone-5-release-date-in-2012-siri-iphone-4s-october-14th-sprint/

Apple CEO Tim Cook unveils the iPhone 4S and leaves the iPhone 5 on the cutting room floor until a 2012 release date, promoting the “Siri” voice assistant feature of the iPhone 4S instead. The iPhone 4S goes on sale October 14th with preorders beginning on October 7th via AT&T and Verizon, with Sprint also joining the iPhone 4S picture a day after priceless pre-game chatter which incorrectly had the iPhone 5 going to Sprint exclusively. The 4S will run Apple’s new iOS 5 operating system, which will also be released for free for older iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch devices on October 12th. The iPhone 4 is sticking around at $99, and the iPhone 3GS as a “free with contract” phone. While packed with enough enticing morsels to keep us parsing them for some time, today’s event comes as a letdown for those who had been waiting for the iPhone 5 since this past summer, when Apple’s tradition of new iPhones every twelve months would have placed its launch timeframe. However, despite looking almost exactly like its iPhone 4 predecessor, the 4S is a hardware dynamo with upgraded specs and features in every category, many of which had been rumored for the iPhone 5 instead. The most likely explanation is that Apple, having failed to ready the iPhone 5 for a 2011 release date due to manufacturing or other issues, opted to pack most of the iPhone 5 features into a modestly overhauled iPhone 4 shell instead. The specs on the new “iPhone 4S” are impressive…

Agreed.

I think that Droid and its newly release models and upcoming models had an affect on Apple and its release.

They were never really challenged for a release.

Droid Bionic comes out earlier this month.
Droid Prime coming out early Nov?
HTC has a couple of power droids coming out.

Truth is - forget about dual core phones. We probably see quad core phones mid 2012.

So how long is Apple going stack up?
I know and understand they are more about features and functionality and easy navigation and all that. BUT when Droid can do all that and BE FASTER, stronger better - what does apple have? A niche that is shrinking?

For the record - I am a technology buff, a phone buff. I dont have a dog in this fight. While I have a Droid X, I have an iTouch. I would get iphone 5 - I just like them all for the differences.

I honestly feel Apple fell short w/ this 4S idea. I wonder what Jobs was saying about it before he fell sicker and resigned.

That would be curious...

Explain how it won't sell. It's going on to Sprint. Automatically, you get new customers and customers who wished for this to be true from day 1.

If they would have given a release date for the iPhone 5, people would continue to wait because they have something somewhat concrete. Instead they kept them in the dark with nothing. The phone will sell because of uncertainty. For all we know it could be coming out in June of next year.

People are ignorant to switch carriers when the iPhone 5 is nearly upon us. The iphone 5 will not be a summer launch. I suspect Feb or March at the latest from what I have read.

Dumb to sign a 2 yr contract for this 4S phone. Its completely different than the 3G/3GS time of sales. Phones are coming out faster than ever. Add that to the fact that this 4S phone really isn't that much of an improvement from the 4. That wouldn't make me run to sign up for a new 2 yr contract.

In apples defense I am not your regular Joe. I do know what phones are out there and what is about to be released. I follow that news pretty regularly.

I guess since its nothing super special, I don't see the shiny new toy written all over this new 4S phone that will make people run out to commit to it.

They might...but Its highly suspect.

Just read around the web. Lots of folks are floored that this was it today from Apple.

I suspect Feb or March at the latest from what I have read. And until about 1:00 central this afternoon, everything you read said it was coming today. And we were going to get a bigger screen and no home button or wider home button, more memory, etc, etc. Absolutely no one was talking about Siri and while some speculated there would be a 4S model, no one was saying that would be all we were getting.

Fact is all these tech blogs and magazines really just don't have a clue (except that time when that guy left his prototype behind in a bar and it got sold to Gizmodo :D). It's fun to guess and speculate, but if you just want hard news you really just have to wait until the big unveiling.

I don't think Apple is really worried about it revenue-wise...

They have the top two selling phones on the market in the 3Gs and 4. It's all about sales and they are the undisputed king. Overall market share means nothing to them in the long term. The Android market is shared among dozens of phones. The Apple market isn't.

They will sell a TON of 4s models. They are waiting on the 4g LTE technology to release the iPhone 5. I will wait on that as my 3GS is a GREAT phone...

Today is about what I expected...

That's far from as outrageous as most phones without a contract.

Are you sure that is without a contract?

My 32 iPhone 4 was 299.

Usually Apple works prices down for similar models between versions.

I'd think the 32GB will be $199 and the 64GB will be $299.

That is almost a year old, but that sounds about right for the iPhone4S. There is no way in hell Apple would be selling iPhone4S for $200/$300. They have to get kickbacks (subsidies) from the phone companies. The phones cost more than that to build and we all know Apple is all about huge margins.

The 16GB iPhone 4 cost $188.51 to be exact. (http://news.cnet.com/8301-31021_3-20009027-260.html) The larger storage capacity phones would cost even more.

No doubt. I'm an att customer. This sucks.

I'm leaning towards upgrading to it, mostly because I still have the 3GS and have been waiting for awhile for a new one to come out. I'd have gotten the 4, but was concerned about the bad rap the antenna was getting.

I'll just get a middle-of-the road (32GB) and then if the 5 looks much better, I'll give the 4S to my wife and upgrade to that one.

Why would apple hitch their wagon to any specific company at this point?

This is the part I don't get, but I only suspect they may see more competition on the horizon.

Guaranteed $20B from a single company over five years just to withhold the iPhone 5 just for a month or two from other vendors?

It's not like they are pulling the same exact thing they did with AT&T where it was 100% exclusive for the entire life of the phone.

Seriously, though, she doesn't really care about technology all that much.

She'd still be using a Gordon Gekko cell phone if I didn't get her new stuff from time to time.

Sprint will offer unlimited data plan for the iPhone 4S

A Sprint spokesperson gave us a ring to let us know that the newly announced iPhone 4S will be eligible for the carrier's unlimited data plan. According to Sprint, pricing will start at $69.99 for unlimited data and 450 talk minutes, with the Simply Everything unlimited calling and data running you $99.99. At the very least, the company's confirmation that the plan is sticking around will help the third US carrier to nab the iPhone stand out among its predecessors. We'll add some PR as soon as it hits.

I sold my iPhone 3G at the time of the iPhone 4 release for $189 on ebay.

Pretty much paid $100 extra to get a phone that literally took a steamer on the 3G.

Who actually needs unlimited?

If you spend that much time and use that much bandwidth on the phone, find a computer to sit at.

I have 5GB, I think and I have never even come close to that.

1) I don't ever want to worry about a data cap.

2) I actually do use tethering on a laptop when I have to.

I had T-Mobile's 5GB plan, but I downgraded it to the regular 3GB plan. I don't think I ever use more than 300-400mbs while NOT connected to WiFi.

btw, Android Ice Cream Sandwich will monitor and log how much data you're using on an app by app bases. So if your data usage is going haywire, you know exactly which one is using it. Of course, it will tell you which apps are sending data that shouldn't be too!

I watch alot of videos and download podcasts from my phone daily. 2-3 of them a day, usually 10MB ea. Probably around a gig a month there.
