View Full Version : Jerry, once again, questions Garrett

Bryant missed the next week and was hampered by the injury until the team hit the bye in Week 5.
But against the Rams on Sunday, Bryant returned all five punts in the game. For the time being, it looks like Jason Garrett has decided to plug Bryant in as the full-time punt returner.
Until the owner steps in, of course.
"We've got to get others ready to return those kicks," Jones said Tuesday during his radio show on KRLD-FM in Dallas. "I'm not going to say he's injury prone, but I will say he's more subject to getting hit and hurt with the way he stands up and fights (for yardage)."
Jones might have a point, but it might be a discussion better had behind closed doors between a coach and owner/general manager as opposed to publicly questioning a decision by your head coach for the second straight week.

He's been doing this all year. Garrett has had to go back make statements on things Jerry has said to the media several times this year.

I strongly criticized his drunken rants from a few years ago.
And I have had enough of his mouth this year.
The guy is really starting to make me not like him.

I love our coach.
However, I am with Mr. Jones.....I am scared to death of Dez fighting to stay up and pulling something and missing 5 weeks.
Let someone else return the punts please. Thank you.:starspin

That's fine, a lot of people are worried about it, even myself. However, that's a conversation he needs to have with the staff at a meeting, not in the media.

Exactly.
No one is bothered by the fact that he's worried about the extra hits and potential injuries. Plenty of fans have those exact same worries and concerns.
But he shouldn't be questioning his coach, or out right saying that they should be doing this, to the media.
He should privately talk to Garrett about it and no one in the world other than those two should even know that the conversation took place.

I don't think he's questioning Garrett, here.
I think he's saying that we need to get other players ready to return punts. Since we haven't been able to do that, we've been forced to put Dez there which is not what we would like to do.
Questioning Garrett to me would be more like 'I don't understand why we have Dez back there.'
Here, he seems to understand why...because we don't have anybody else ready to return them.

Jerry has many good and desirable qualities as an owner. Unfortunately, his mouth is not of them. It's the critical defect that has been prevented his teams from achieving true elite status, in my opinion.

This is how I'm feeling about it.
Stay in his box, get the players signed that Jason wants signed, and clap and cheer for the team. Come down to the sidelines, pat guys on the back, hell, strap on a helmet and stand on the sidelines to feel like one of the guys for all I care.
But please, Jerry, be quiet -- EVEN IF he's not criticizing the coach, just be quiet. It leaves far too much open for media spin.

This is pretty obvious in this case.
That's the thing with Jerry. Often, he refers to decisions the team has made behind closed doors, and he's the one who 'breaks' the tidbit to the press. When this happens, people freak out as if he's setting policy. When really, he's an active owner who wants to be in the loop with the decisions his football braintrust makes.
Obviously, getting drunk in a luxury suite during a game and running your mouth inappropriately is an unfortunate exception here, but it's not really the rule.

For anyone who thinks Jerry is questioning Garrett is just jumping to conclusions. The cowboys brought in multiple players who have PR/KR experience and gave them a workout. Maybe, Garrett doesn't want to use anyone else, but Bryant until they sign someone with experience. T-New is a value on defense, but doesn't have the explosion Bryant has. I believe Garrett & Jones discussed training someone new or signing someone new and this is not Jones going behind his back.

Thats what I got out of it too. Strange the "getting people ready to return kicks" means that hes questioning Garrett.
Someone on NFLN kinda echoed my thoughts, Jerry just needs to keep these kinds comments inside the organization, and not put them out in front of the media. To many media types twist it into half truths and speculation.

Excellent post.. and that brings us to the root of what most of our problems with the guy are. He needs to just shut his yapper.
I don't think he was really questioning JG here either, but please, just shut up about it. Handle things in house, as JG said he wants to do things, and there's really no need to put things in front of the media like this and yap 24/7 about things that are the coaches business.

Legitimate concern, considering Bryant's history of injuries and potential importance to the offense. This thread sure seems like another bash Jerry thread.

Didn't say he did. But if you can't see the problem in this and many other Jones statements (which he just doesn't need to speak period) then nothing can be said to convince you the statement should just not have been said publicly.

This thread isn't about other things Jerry has said publicly. It's about the current quote. And I don't see a thing wrong with Jerry implying the team is trying to get another punt returner ready.
So, I don't know if 'nothing can be said' to convince me this particular statement should not have been said publicly, but at least it's true that nothing has been said yet that's at all convincing.

Some just won't get it no matter how obvious it is. Jerry needs to learn to just shut his mouth and let the coaches worry about the stuff that should be coaches business. If he ever learns to do that, he'll have alot more respect from the fanbase instead of most just waiting for him to go already.

It's not really an example at all. It's an example of Jerry getting blamed and excoriated over nothing, which shouldn't have to happen because Jerry gives enough real examples of shooting his mouth off each season to make this exact same point.

Its an example of him running his mouth about something that shouldn't be his decision in the first place. There's no reason to say anything about who's going to return kicks. JG will take care of that. As the coach of the football team, thats up to him what he wants to do there. No input from the peanut gallary is necessary.

He can say what he wants.. and it still doesn't make it appropriate most of the time.
If you're worried about losing one of your playmakers, that's cool. No problem.
Saying, "We have to get other guys ready to return kicks" seems like he's telling his coaches what they have to do though. No need.
Im confident JG can handle his team.. that's what the owner pays him to do.
So sit back, shaaddap, and let the coach handle the coaching decisions.

You seem confused. Its actually JJ who likes to make a mountain out of a "mole hole" regarding anything that goes on with the Cowboys. That's what he does.. and that's why people are sick of him.
Need we go back to earlier in this same week when he went on the radio to tell the world that he gave the green light for DeMarco to go ahead and break Emmitt's record?
You know.. like it wasn't going to happen if he didn't allow it?

The big deal is Jerry runs his mouth too much and makes big deals out of everything.
Are we all a little concerned when we see Dez back to return a punt?
Im sure we are.
Does it need to be said? No.
That's not even what he said either. He didn't just say, "well ya know, i get a little concerned when i see Dez back there to return kicks because of the way he fights to stay up."
He says, "We HAVE to get other guys ready to return kicks."
Again, its not a huge deal, its just another example of Jerry being Jerry.
Just shut it and let your coach, coach the team. That's what you pay him to do. He'll worry about who plays where and how often, etc.. you just sit up there and slurp your mai tai's and shuttie.
