I go to Ohio State and within the last week there has been like 4 robberies at gunpoint around the periphery of campus, in other words **** is gettin real here. This kind of has me concerned about going out.

Does anyone who has lived in a large city have any advice or practical tips to avoid being shaken down? Obviously don't go down that dark alley at 2am is one tip.

Jeez. I guess just stay in well populated areas and like you'd said, avoid dark places at odd hours where less people are likely to be around. And I'd try to stay in groups and avoid walking around alone. Sorry to hear, stay safe.

-Walk in groups...

-Try to stay in well-lit areas.

-Call campus police before leaving to ask for security. Sometimes they'll provide an escort if it's real late.

-Push the school to add more lighting in and around campus.

-Keep your cellphone close to you at all times.

Just some tips that we had to adhere to when I went to UH.

Walk holding your cell phone up to your ear could be one deterrent.

All good advise, but the absolute best advise. Be keenly aware of your surroundings.

Most muggers sneak up on their victim (or get in a place where the victim walks up on them)

Don't just enter hallways, alleys or closed spaces (like building entrance ways) without first inspecting the area.

Also keep an eye on whoever is around you. They are watching you before they attempt to mug you.

Cell phone + sneakers.. Pepper spray also.

Protein and a gym membership may help as well.

a girl here was robbed at gunpoint (or something like a gun) recently too.

She was in the garage of an apartment complex, and it was late. I would say, in that situation,

1) don't wear headphones / listen to music
2) have a fake wallet to hand over. Include fake credit cards, maybe a few real dollars.
3) have your google # on speed dial...why? because if you dial it while in the process, it will go to voicemail...which will automatically record the crime, at least audio. this allows too if they have a getaway car, and they take your phone, at least a small opportunity for you to get some info from them before they discover that the phone is in a call. But, if you kept the cell phone, it's a great way to record your description of the assailants and getaway vehicle right after the incident.

If you have an iphone you should download a GPS tracker so if they take it you can find them.

If you carry a decent amount of cash.

Make one stash small bills and hide the bigger bills in other pocket.

Pull out the smaller stash in a wrinkled manner :)

Don't talk on your phone when you're walking at night or text -- stay aware of your surroundings.

Catch a cab when you can if you can, or ride with friends, etc. Stay in groups.

Don't look like a target.

You still will get mugged for that, you'll just be getting mugged behind bars. A far worse mugging, at that.

Walk and look like you know where you are going. Even if you don't.

Be aware of your surroundings. Get off your phone etc. Walk and look at your world. If you need to check email or take a call, get in a secure place or bar :)

You are a kid in school, who would want your PBR beer money? :)

+1 Right with you. Most schools don't allow guns on campus.

Texas might have concealed carry laws, but you can't carry on UH campus.

Or even pull a gun when someone has one in your face before your realize what's happening.

At that point, you'd basically be calling their bluff that they'd use it and might as well just scrap with them with or without a gun.

Like a sudden jerking motion that's supposed to be you grabbing your wallet wouldn't arouse suspicion.

Many campuses have hotlines you can call to get someone to walk with you across campus.

Well, at least mine did.

Not sure they show up for guys though as it was an effort to reduce incidents of rape.

If you're on campus, don't they have those blue lights you can press?

And if you're worried or something, at UT austin, you can press a blue light I think and just press all the blue lights along your path, and as soon as you miss one, the cops come down and check it out.

But the danger spots are outside of campus. Unfortunately but fortunately, I live on fraternity row here off campus, so although it's loud at all times of the night, there are places where you're around a lot of people.

It's all about being in lighting, being around people, etc.

Last spring, I used to walk around all the time at 4 am, which, looking back, is pretty damn dangerous, but as long as you're on big, lighted roads, it's much safer.

Pretty much the best advice is this, just map out the the area visually. I would always take good sight lines, and make sure I was paying attention 360 degrees. It is amazing I would walk like that so much after 2am in downtown, somehow I never had anything go wrong.

Fully understand that,WG. I have no business to conduct on a campus, but other places where it is legal are just a dangerous,if not more so.

Lots of good advice in this thread.

Just one more thing. Don't walk around with Romo. If you get mugged, it sure as hell will be his fault...!

If you're being mugged at gun point, are you really going to try and get into a firefight with the guy?

No as soon as the mugger sees metal being pulled he will fire point blank into the chest. This isn't the wild west.

Since my posting this there have been two more gunpoint robberies. Things are getting ridiculous. If I go to a friends house and can't park right in front of their place I just call a cab.

Wear t-shirts, sweatshirts, or jackets that are Army, Marines, Police, etc.

It is a simple bluff that often works.

Kind of like when you go on vacation, halfway fill up a big dog bowl of food at your front door and write on the bowl "Brutus".
