It wasn't until 1982 that sacks became an official stat, which is a shame for players like Deacon Jones, but great for those of us watching today's game. It gives us statistical proof of how great DeMarcus Ware is truly playing.

Ware is now just 2.5 sacks behind Jim Jeffcoat's team career record for sacks as recognized by the league, 94.5. However, the Cowboys identify Harvey Martin as their franchise record-holder, with 114.0 in his career, and greats such as Jethro Pugh, George Andrie, Ed "Too Tall" Jones and Randy White are still ahead of Jeffcoat's mark.

He's going to crush Martin's Cowboys unofficial record in my opinion. Ware will end the season with 26 or 27 sacks!

No shot. That will never be touched imo.

No shot. That will never be touched imo.23 sacks will never be touched? The "official" record is 22.5, Ware's had 20, and there are more passing attempts every year. Of course it will be broken.

Here's what you quoted: "He's going to crush Martin's Cowboys unofficial record in my opinion. Ware will end the season with 26 or 27 sacks!" You said, "that will never be touched," which sounds like you're talking about Martin's unofficial record (23). So I guess you meant 26 or 27, to which my response is the same - I fully expect that to be reached, given how the game is changing.

Ok, I think no way :laugh2:

So you're saying Harvey Martin's career number of sacks at 114 will never be touched? Are you serious?

Ware only has 22 more sacks to match that. Not counting his rookie year, Ware has averaged 15 sacks a season. He's on pace to have 27 this season. Two years, at most, and he'll have Martin's record. He probably has a good 4 or 5 years left in him.

DeMarcus Ware will obliterate Harvey Martin's record.

The question is gradually becoming not whether Ware is the greatest in Cowboys history or the best in the league right now, it's whether he is the Greatest of All Time.

Wait, hmm. I might have read the first post I quoted wrong. I thought it was saying Harvey Martin's unofficial season record was 26.

Want to know a real wake up call? Martin's 23 sack season of 1977 was the last year NFL teams played 14 games.

23 sacks in 14 games.

Pretty amazing.

but didn't they say Decon Jones once had something like 29 or 30 sacks in a season? I believe that would have been during the 14 game seasons as well. I could be remembering that wrong though.

I can't imagine there is anyone who believes that Ware won't break the 114 by Martin for Cowboys career. I mean if he keeps the pace he's on this year and gets another 10 or 12 he'll be, what, 10 behind that at the start of next season? He's likely going to pass Martin next year.

I believe he's going to pass Martin's 23 for a single season this year. I think Ware is going to wind up with between 24 or 25 sacks.

I really wish the NFL would commission a panel of statisticians to watch old films and find these records.
