View Full Version : 2 Earthquakes in Oklahoma in last 24 hours

The first was last night a 4.7....the last one happened about an hour ago and was 5.6. It broke the record for the largest earthquake in Okalahoma history and managed to scare the CRAP out of me.

My house shook like a MOTHER and the sound was freaking eerie. We had another 4. 2 or so about a year ago as well. prior to that I had NEVER felt one and I've lived here for many years. I'm really not liking these...at all. I'm worried these are a prelude to a BIG one. They say that's not the case but they also said we would not get another one this soon or this powerful. They said all we would get are smaller aftershocks and instead we get a 5.6

I don't scare easy but these things really spooked me. Being buried alive isn't a pleasant thought.

I felt the 2nd one tonight down here in Dallas. I wondered what that was.

Didn't make it to me. Actually just a little surprised and disappointed. Feeling earthquakes in Kansas are practically a once in a lifetime thing.

Felt it in Texas. It was sort of eerie, but actually kind of cool. Thought I was going nuts for a second until I saw my dog's water bowl rippling. :)

Of course it only lasted 10 seconds or so and didn't damage anything.

Tell me about it. I work in a cave.

I hear people felt it up here in KC too, but I was bowling at the time and didn't notice a thing.

I live in Bixby and was awake for both of them. The scary thing was how long this second one lasted as well as the numerous aftershocks.

I know man this last one lasted what seemed like freaking forever. Unfortunately I've been doing some reading and finding that our odds of another big one are actually decent.

"We have the potential of seeing another sizeable earthquake in the coming hours and days, up to the next three weeks."

http://www.kjrh.com/dpp/news/local_news/updated-list-of-biggest-earthquakes-near-tulsa

And this one is scary too:

http://www.kjrh.com/dpp/news/local_news/could-the-massive-quakes-of-100-years-ago-happen-again%3F

the thing is, I'm usually the type that chases tornadoes but these earthquakes get me to acting like a chick.....running around panicking. I find them scary as hell and I'm afraid we're going to get a BIG one...like a 6.8 or 7.0. I'll never ever forget the sound these things make.

The bad thing about these is there isn't a failsafe thing to do outside of flying in an aircraft. I found myself walking fast to my backyard doorway. People say don't go outside but I don't buy the reasoning that if you do, the ground will open up and swallow you like a giant aspirin.

Being inside the house will do the same thing. It's not like I have a Chlorine plant a block away and Ill die from the fumes from going outside.

Living in Kansas we rarely experience something like this. So I go into work Monday and it turns out we had to have the maintenance people check all the equipment out. Then I find out the people who were at work when that happened didn't know what they were supposed to do in case of an earthquake. We do the tornado drill every spring so it's not a big deal any more. Now we have to come up with an emergency procedure of what to do in case of another earthquake.

I felt it too just now. This **** is getting really old. I would be okay with it if I KNEW we wouldn't get a big one. KOTV had a story(can't find it right now) that said that while it is unlikely, there is always the possibility that these quakes are actually foreshocks leading up to a really big one. Again, not likely, but still possible.

well they are saying 4.7....pretty messed up that I am getting good at gauging earthquake size just by feeling it.

The area has definitely entered a seismically active time period and if we get the "big one" all of Kansas will be impacted as well.

I'm with you man, I head outside when this happens...I'm not getting buried alive.

With all the years of mole trails and underground shopping malls they've built, I hope that the ground doesn't continue to shake or my backyard could drop five feet. :D

I felt the earthquake!!! Watching Raw, everyhting started to shake like in the middle of a thunderstorm. It was so cool! Probably the only time in my life I will get to experience that.

Yep, Cl is heavier than air too. Stuff flows like water over the ground, and will collect in low-lying areas for a bit of time depending on climatic conditions. Suffocating in the stuff is NOT the way you want to punch out.

There was a lab incident in the mid-90's at Southwest Texas State where the lab TA was a complete dumb *** and wouldn't excuse the lab students when they started complaining about burning eyes and lungs. The old lab protocol was that if you left the lab, you failed that lab period unless you were going to the bathroom and even then you needed a TA escort.

The fume hood ventilation fan drive belt had busted or something like that and their experiments that were producing clorine gas were instead pushing it into the lab working area. Finally one or two of the students rebelled and left. Police and Hazmat came, whole building evacuated, and a few students hospitalized. TA was fired, school got sued for having an asinine lab policy, and it changed where you had to be a grad student to teach a lab.

My Quantitative Analysis lab TA was one of the undergrads in that lab and said all of her clothes bleached white from the suspended particulates in the air. Several of the students had emphysema-like symptoms for a few weeks following it as well.

I think the reason you don't go outside during an earthquake has a lot to do with falling power lines more than the ground opening up.

You know, usually I would be right there with you, but that 5.6 the other night scared me to death. Now when they come I get a shot of adrenalin that really freaks me out and I can't even remotely enjoy them. I don't know, I just want to go back to earthquakes not being a normal occurrence. I've had enough of the experience to last me the rest of my life. :)

You should try riding out an earthquake way up high in a skyscraper. FUN! :laugh2:

The reason you don't go outside during an earthquake if you're indoors is because while trying to get out, you get hit with falling stuff. What you're supposed to do is stay wherever you are (indoors or outdoors) and take cover if you are indoors. If outdoors, just avoid structures and power lines.

This. The most dangerous part of going outside is moving through the building your in currently in.

Best thing to do is move to the closest doorway, under a desk / bed. Otherwise stay right where you are. (unless you are near something like a large bookshelf or china cabinet, then back way from it) I suppose if you are standing at the front door, by all means go outside. Move as far away from any large structure as you can.

And if you add up 12/12/12, you get 36.

That's what today's daily earthquake was!
