We grow or raise much of our own food and seldom buy any packaged product but still buy whole wheat bread and unsalted tops white crackers, bad as they are for our health. Old habits die hard.

When our chickens aren't laying we buy organic free-range eggs and when our Jersey cow dries up we drive 75 miles to buy whole raw unpastuerized milk and cheese from an organic dairy.

We rarely buy any foods that aren't organic, except for the bread and crackers mentioned above.

Life is good if you eat right.

I buy catfish and tilapia mainly.. But depending on how I feel I may get some fresh salmon.

I'll try other fish when I go out to eat, but I don't really buy much beyond those three.

bruschetta!!

sooo good if you do it with tomatoes, basil, roasted peppers, garlic and a little balsamic vinegar on toasted bread (sometimes, we toast the bread with a slice of mozzerella on top then put the bruschetta on it).

amazing.

when it's time to eat chicken, you don't go to church's ..you go out back, chop it's head off, defeather it and throw it in the water.

seems like alot of work.... but i bet it's tastes great.

It works kinda like that except we do it as a family and extended family members participate in the process and we will process 15 -20 at a time and freeze them. The family members have a big midday meal on us and everyone takes home a chicken and a turkey for their contribution.

We take selected cows and pigs to town where they are killed and processed to our specifications. We get some steaks and a roast or two but everything else is made into high quality ground beef at 85% to 90% lean. With pasture raised, grass fattened cattle the fat is high in Omega 3s and beneficial so we don't worry about the fat.

There are many benefits to country living. You can grow as big a garden as you want to work at. Moo is the loudest sound we hear. Solitude reigns supreme. Been kinda hot and dry this year and the creek dried up but it's full again.

Life is good when ya got a little water.

Try with simple spaghetti. Not true Italian but it will give you an idea.

My kids love spaghetti and I make it for them before meets and PTs/ISTs and my boys love it when I add salsa to the spaghetti sauce. They call it Spaghetti Salsa. It just gives it a kick and it really makes spaghetti enjoyable for me (though I usually don't eat the stuff).

Just take a regular jar of Prego add ground beef, canned mushrooms, black olives and Pace picante sauce (hot). Start with a little and taste test it because a little goes a long way.

This is my youngest son's (16yo) favorite dish.

 You sir are living life the way humans are supposed to. I would never be able to live that austere of a life simply because I've grown accustomed and addicted to many modern food stuffs. I've made strides such as only drinking water and milk (no pop!) and the only time I eat food with preservatives or that has been highly processed is if I am starving and I have nothing fast in the house (no fast food except a veggie pizza occasionally).

It is insane how far away, speaking in terms of our diet, that humans have came. We should NEVER be eating most of the stuff we eat nowadays.

As far as shopping, the only odd thing I absolutely have to have in stock is cookie dough ice cream.

I'd like any advice you've got for making a hot salsa. Granted, I've tried the ghost chili before at a Chinese restaurant and it was a bit spicy for me. Delicious thoughOkay, I definitely think roasting the peppers adds heat. So I like to dice a dozen jalapeņos, 3 habaņeros, and 2 serrano peppers together and then put them in a skillet and heat them up while stirring.

Then I add a diced onion, a clove of diced garlic, and 6 to 8 diced red tomatoes depending upon your favorite. I like Roma tomatoes personally so I use 8. Squeeze in the juice from 2 limes, add a teaspoon of salt, some ground black pepper, and if you like cilantro sprinkle a little in it. Stir it all together and let it chill.

It is good with the peppers still warm, but better once chilled.

medium hot salsaSame as about but cut the jalapeņos in half and eliminate the habaņeros. Instead of serrano peppers use some Anaheims.

If I go to Krogers, I always get gift cards, particularly Amazon.

We get 2x fuel points, so I get $100 amazon gift card and get $.20 off per gallon. I usually accrue enough to get $1 off per gallon, then get a couple cars together (since it's 35 gallons max).

So basically $500 amazon/AMEX/shell gift card - 6% cashback on my AMEX card - $35 in gas = $65 saved.

Huh, interesting, I never knew you put ground black pepper in a salsa (but i've never made one before).

I've gotten used to spiciness...my parents are Indian, so my mom puts so much pepper in everything. Most of the time, when I cried, it was because of the epic spiciness of my mom's curries.

But, I guess I'm better for it. I can eat really great things despite the heat, and I've even come to enjoy the heat.
