Report: Bears to claim Kyle Orton
11/22/2011 5:55:49 PM
According to Vaughn McClure of the Chicago Tribune (http://twitter.com/#%21/vxmcclure23/status/139109153833623553), the Bears will make an effort to claim quarterback Kyle Orton according to a league source.

If Dallas puts in a claim (and I still would), and no other team but the Bears does, we would get him.

Orton's camp talked to Broncos about release after Cutler injury
11/22/2011 4:17:54 PM
According to Mike Klis of the Denver Post (http://www.denverpost.com/broncos/ci_19391873), Kyle Orton and his agent David Dunn had started talking to Broncos officials about the move after it was learned Chicago Bears' quarterback Jay Cutler suffered a broken thumb on his right passing thumb Sunday that will likely sideline him for the rest of the season.
Orton has declined to comment.
While it is likely Orton would like to return to Chicago, there are a number of teams that have suffered injuries to their top quarterbacks in addition to the Bears. Houston has lost Matt Schaub for a unknown length of time and the Chiefs yesterday placed Matt Cassel on injured reserve, ending his season.
If both Houston and Chicago put waiver claims on Orton, the Texans would get him because their strength of schedule is easier than Chicago's.

Was about to post the same thing. We could claim him and offer him to the Bears for a pick, or just keep him and release Kitna.

You can't offer him to the Bears for a pick. The trade deadline is over.

What if we added Dexter Coakley...would they lift the trade deadline for that?

It would be kind of cool if the NFL had a waiver trade system like they do in baseball.

was listening to Syrius about this. They were of the opinion that no club would claim him since if they do they take his contract which means $2.6 million for 5-6 games. And he would need at least a couple of weeks to acclimate to any system; so you would be paying that money for at most 4 games.

And it would be really dumb for the Bears to claim him; they are 30th with only the 49rs and Packers below them. No way would they claim him. So they could then negoitate with Orton; and since the Bronco's waived him at this late date he can file for terminiation pay which is the bulk of what is still owed him for this year. He can then sign with any team for the veteran minimum and still collect a chunk from the Bronco's. So the Bears could get him for the veteran minimum instead of the $2.6 million they would have to spend if they claimed him.

I live in Denver and I like Orton as a QB. The guy was a lot better when McDaniels was running the offense than he has been since Fox has taken over. And I don't say that as any big fan of McDaniels but it's just an observation. I think that if Orton could get on a team that didn't have a lot of controversy surronding the QB position, that he could do well. When Denver tried to trade him at the beginning of the season I thought that Arizona would have been an ideal place for him to go. I'd love to see him as a Cowboys back-up but for his sake I think he needs to be starting somewhere. I wish him the best except for when he plays us. ;)
