Benson runs a 4.51 and 4.59 - pretty impressive.
DJ lifts 21 times.

"The players ran indoors on what can only be described as "soft FieldTurf," which makes for a slow track compared to what they ran on in Indy."
Benson may have just moved himself back up into the top RB spot.

"Benson was 5-10 3/8 and 225 pounds. He had a long jump of 9-foot-8 and a 33-inch vertical jump. He lifted the strength bar 18 times. In the 40, he was timed as low as 4.51 and as high as 4.59. That's impressive; not even Emmitt Smith, the NFL's all-time leading rusher, ran that fast when he was coming out of school."
That might be the dumbest reference I've ever seen in a scouting report.
Wow, Cedric Benson is faster than Emmitt Smith? Impossible! That's like saying Braylon Edwards is faster than Jerry Rice, or that Aaron Rodgers can throw a football farther than Joe Montana!

No kidding. I agree 100%.
And it's not like a hand timed 4.51 is "fast" anyway. It's solid, but not spectacular.

Yeah that is pretty ridiculous, isn't it? Anyone worth his salt knows Emmitt timed rather slow coming out of school.

I don't think it does but the poster did say might. I mean, you can make a case for him being the top back. Those times probably show that he can be an outside threat. He does catch the ball extremely well. He's shown excellent productivity over his career. He isn't injury prone and he can pass block. He's probably the most complete back in the draft. Perhaps the poster believes that posting a 40 time in that range basically answers any worries about Benson not being fast enough to be considered the top pick.

I agree, that was pretty stupid...how many hundreds of RB's have run faster than Emmitt the past 15 years? how many of them stink and were nowhere near the player #22 was

he might have, though I seriously doubt it
he's not going to be the 1st RB taken, nor is Derrick Johnson going to be a top-10 pick

I had the impression that the poster felt the 40 times moved Benson back up the board because they were respectable times and were run on a "slow track". I'm not so sure if that fact will be be taken into consideration or not when teams evaluate his numbers. Either way the team that drafts him will be getting a very good...potentially great... running back.

I think Carnell Williams is the top back with Benson a close 2nd. Ronnie Brown is faster but has shown less vision than the other 2 when I have seen him and thats at least 12 times.
I really could care less about Bensons' 40 times as he is a tough inside running back not a breakway threat. He'll really help someone.

Spring Break brawl sends students to hospital
02:40 PM CST on Wednesday, March 16, 2005
Associated Press
SOUTH PADRE ISLAND -- A Spring Break brawl on a South Padre Island beach sent several college students to the hospital late Tuesday.
The fight reportedly involved students from Oklahoma and the University of Texas.
Joe Strmiska, a bystander, was injured during the brawl.
"OU and UT were like throwing bottles back and forth and the whole nine yards," said Joe Strmiska, a bystander who was injured during the brawl.
"Five other guys jumped on top of me, kicked me in the head," said Bret Baylor, who suffered an apparent broken nose in the fight.
Witnesses are offering different versions of what sparked it.
But Police Chief Robert Rodriguez says the disturbance may have started when someone walked over a sand sculpture of .
Banged up students say people were using shovels as weapons and cracking bottles over heads.
"Guys were picking up the metal shovels, hitting each other with them. All over UT and OU. But they're hitting everyone with shovels and flags, college flags," said Marla Cody, a witness. "Those girls have concussions, carrying them out because they got hit with glass bottles, beer bottles."
At least ten people were reported injured, with non-threatening injuries. Five were taken to area hospitals.
Police said no arrests have been made because they don't know who started the fight. They are asking for anyone who may have gotten the beach brawl on tape to come forward.
Witnesses say the culprits were out of control.
"We're here to drink beer, have fun -- not that violent stuff, I mean that's ridiculous," said Brad Lopez, a witness. "We don't want that -- no one does."
Everyone should be here to have a good time and everything else. This whole thing between OU and UT -- they should let it stay between the college and the football team not bring it here to South Padre," said Strmiska.
The beach was trashed, littered with broken bottles and beer cans.

Ronnie Brown goes first due to the fact that he has big play potential every time he touches the ball.

I was only saying that because there have been rumblings that Benson was slow. That his not running at the Combine, and choosing to do it on Texas' slow turf, would hurt him. It didn't. He posted solid numbers. I don't need my orange shades for that analysis.
Regarding the Padre Island fight...stupid. They say they're there to drink and party...then someone is sculpting out of sand? How weird and out of place is that? Then it escalates because someone has to be even more childish and walk on it. Then guys have to be "tough" in front of the chicks. I'm glad I don't hang out with these losers.

Benson has produced over his career (sans Okla and Mich), and I feel Cadillac has shown more in games. Brown to mean is just a fast 40-guy. He didn't really take over any games.

The order the backs should be drafted, in my opinion:
1. Williams
2. Benson
3. Brown
The order the back will be drafted, in my opinion:
1. Brown
2. Benson
3. Williams
Brown has straight line speed and size. His first step is ordinary though and he doesn't show a lot of wiggle.
Williams doesn't have his size or top end speed, but his first step is explosive and he shows instincts an vision that Brown only can wish for. Cadillac can cut upfield and be full bore in a split second and he's darn strong for his size.
I'd take Williams over the other two any day.
In fact, if he somehow slid to 11, I wouldn't mind us taking him at all.

DJ didn't run as he already ran at the Combine see below:
(March 23, 2005) -- Texas outside linebacker Derrick Johnson, one of the premier defensive players in the 2005 NFL Draft, recently completed his Pro Day at his school's campus in Austin, Texas. The 6-foot-3¼, 242-pound Johnson just lifted weights and did position drills, but at the combine he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.52 seconds (the average at his position was nearly 4.70). Immediately following his workout, Johnson talked to NFL.com about performing in front of dozens of scouts and thinking about his future as a professional athlete.
NFL Network
What are your impressions of how you did at Texas' Pro Day?
Johnson: I think I really cemented myself as the best linebacker in the country and one of the top defensive players in the draft. I want to get picked as close to No. 1 as possible. That's the plan.
Do you view the draft as a competition among the defensive players?
Johnson: It's always a competition. Football is a sport and so is the draft process. That's how I look at it. I was just focused on doing my drills and getting my stats to the best possible time.
After the workout, did any of the NFL coaches and scouts come up to you and say anything that made an impression?
Johnson: They did. Some of them told me they had never seen a linebacker move the way I was moving as far as my hips. They said my backpedal was as good as a defensive back's, so that's always good for a linebacker coach to tell you. There were five or six coaches who were complimentary.
Derrick Johnson thinks he put himself in position to be the first defender taken in the draft.
You probably get asked this a lot, but which teams do you think are showing the most interest in you?
Johnson: Well, coaches from Minnesota and Miami worked me out after I lifted. I think the front runners based on the rumors I've been hearing are Tampa Bay, Tennessee and Cleveland.
It sounds like you're into following where you might end up. Do you ever catch yourself daydreaming about your future or picture yourself in different team uniforms?
Johnson: Well, yeah. That's just reality. You always think about what team you're going to go to and think about how you would feel in that jersey. It's all part of a fun opportunity to fulfill your dreams.
And now that your workout is over, what are you going to do with yourself between now and the draft?
Johnson: I'm going to work out and follow a regimen. The hard work is pretty much out of the way. It's up to the teams to see who they want.
