During both the Week 12 10-pack (http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/11/28/week-12-monday-10-pack-2/) and Monday night’s edition of NBC SportsTalk (http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/11/29/mondays-10-things-to-know-from-nbc-sportstalk/), we pointed out that, if Vikings quarterback Donovan McNabb (http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/704/donovan-mcnabb) has any desire to play football, he should ask the team for his release.
He apparently has.
Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that McNabb will be released today.

Filed to ESPN: Vikings plan to release Donovan McNabb today, according to a league source.
Would anyone want to bring him here to backup Romo with Kitna's health problems? Not sure I would but I wanted to see what everyone thought.

The Minnesota Vikings plan to release veteran quarterback Donovan McNabb later Thursday, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.
McNabb was benched by Vikings coach Leslie Frazier in mid-October, and rookie Christian Ponder has been behind center ever since. McNabb has remained on the team as the backup.
"I know I have a lot of football left in me," McNabb said at the time of his benching.
Frazier said then that the decision was based solely on what gives the team the best chance to win.

Looks like this could be it for McNabb. He can deny it all it wants, but the proof is in the pudding the guy just doesn't have it anymore. There's an old saying that father time is undefeated. That's true and father time has caught up with Donavan McNabb. This is now the 3rd time in the last 20 months that McNabb has been either cut or traded.

At this point I don't think he's any less done than Kitna.

Doe the Cowboys put in a claim for him??/
That would be hilarious if we did.
It would be like when we had Randall Cunningham come back up Troy Aikman.

I don't think so, but wouldn't it be interesting to see him back in Philly? Just wondering aloud.

My guess is he ends up in Chicago. That's where he's from, and I'm not a Hanie believer.

Cowboys put in a claim to block Bears.
McNabb is definitely at the end of his career, but playing for his hometown Bears might give him alittle extra juice.

according the nfl.com, we are behind Bears in standings (by league), so don't be shocked..unless the Cowboys think he would be a distraction.

Is McNabb subject to waivers?
Yes. We have the same record as the Bears, so I'm not sure which one of us has priority.

I wonder if he still believes that he is a starter or finally come to terms that he will be nothing more than a back up.

Don will hang them up.
Honestly, if his personality were a little different, he'd be an outstanding #2 for a team that had a young QB. He's certainly been through a ton and could be huge as a mentor.

The Bears will put in a claim for him, maybe even the Texans and maybe our Cowboys.

I think he'll be a Texan.
He's been a West Coast offense QB his entire career.

i doubt it. He has a reputation for not being quick to pick up an offense. I doubt that any team that needs a QB is going to think he is a legit option.

How do the Bears get the first claim?
Houston had a worse record last year.

i think the boys should put a claim in for him only because if romo goes down and kitna having back issue i think he would be a better back up than mcgee at this point in their careers.

Houston signed Delomme
On the surface, it makes some sense. We're in need of a backup QB with Kitna injured, and it's probably in our interest to "block" NFC teams in need of a starting QB.
But as others have said, I have my doubts that he would fit our system. He's inaccurate, slow to pick up an offense and radpidly declining in overall skill.
Orton's a guy who, while never a top-shelf starter, "feels" like a quality backup in this league. I don't know that the same can be said of McNabb.

I like him as a backup QB. He has a ton of experience. We don't have to hold on to him forever... just through this year. I have more confidence in him than I do Kitna or Mcgee right now. Kitna is majorly banged up and can't play and Mcgee lacks experience. We NEED someone. Orton would have been ideal but he isn't available. Give me Mcnabb!

If Romo goes down prior to or in the playoffs, I would trust McNabb over McGee and his 44 pass attempts.

McNabb has shown he is not even worth having on a team the last two seasons. McGee has shown the last two seasons that he can improve greatly.
Of course you could go see what Vinny Testeverde or Drew Bledsoe are up to right now and "trust" their 4000 pass attempts over the 44, :donthear: .

McNabb is not a leader IMO. I want him nowhere near our team.
John McClain made a really good point on NFLN. if McNabb was really a mentor, he'd mentor Christian Ponder for the rest of the season instead of asking for his release. Speaks volumes to me.

I go completely the other way.
To me, this is a testament to McNabb's competitiveness.
He could collect a paycheck while not playing in Minnesota or collect the same paycheck contributing elsewhere on the field.
Possibly for a team with playoff and even Super Bowl aspirations - like Houston or Chicago.

Two things you need to be a backup QB .... you can't have a huge ego and you have to be a self starter than can prepare by yourself. A lazy guy with a huge ego like McNabb would be a terrible backup.
I wouldn't be surprised if no one claims him. He's really tarnished his reputation the last few years, both on the field and in the lockerroom.
