Parcells unwilling to label Luck top pick in April's draft
Bill Parcells isn't riding the Andrew Luck bandwagon. Not yet.
For some time, the Stanford quarterback has been viewed as the undisputable top prize in April's draft, but Parcells -- never one to overvalue passers -- says it's way too early to anoint Luck.
"Anyone who says that this guy is the hands down, Heisman Trophy winner or the first pick in the draft right now, I don't think they know what they are talking about," the decorated former coach told ESPN Radio, via The Palm Beach Post. "There's not been enough work done yet."

How much credit does Parcells deserve for those guys becoming Giants? Parcells was not the head coach at the time some of those players like Phil Simms and Lawrence Taylor became Giants. Also, George Young has traditionally been given the credit for building that team as the GM. I bet Parcells had some input even as an assistant coach in getting a few of those players. I doubt he had any input in getting Simms. He and Phil both joined the Giants in 1979.
Based on Parcells own comment that he wasn't allowed to shop for the groceries how much credit does he deserve for the players drafted by the Patriots while he was head coach? It is an interesting question. I am sure he had some influence as the head coach during his time in New England, but not having full personnel decisions is the reason he left. He didn't want Terry Glenn.

depends on the owner/GM. Some listen a lot; some not at all to the coaches.
Terry Glenn was someone I would not have drafted based on how he looked in college; he became a pro while under BP (mind games worked there).

I read somewhere that Parcells was trying to get Luck's draft stock to go down so that Miami would get into position to possible get him. However, I think that is just the media's take on that.
As great as a coach Parcells is, he wasn't the only one calling the shots during draft day. I invite you to read this:
http://www.bloggingtheboys.com/2011/11/25/2586370/understanding-the-dallas-draft-process
Back to Miami, so what has Parcells done over there for that team? What is that second rounder Pat White up to these days? What about the QB situtation? Proof is in the pudding...

Says the guy who didn't see a star in Ware but saw something in Bobby Carpenter and Spears.
Yeah, OK, Charley Tuna.
Although, I personally don't see what the big deal is with Luck. I don't think he will ever be as good as Marino, Brady, Elway, etc. I don't think Luck will be as good as Cam Newton either.
And, I wouldn't put any money down that Luck will have a better career than Romo after all is said and done.
Who knows? I just don't see Luck as being the best QB of this draft class.

he seemed to think Ware was going to be pretty good; and he was the one that made sure Ware learned the WHOLE game. And show me anyone who really hits all his picks; remember Jimmy? He only hit about 1/3 of his. The big difference was due to the stupidity of the Vikes and others he had SO many picks that even at one third hits he got a lot of them. Oh and remember how we got Emmit by mistake? Jimmy had his eye on someone else who in the end was no big deal. And who was the primary one pushing the drafting of WalsH?

Yes, everybody misses on draft picks. The problem with Parcells was the reasons (Ego) that he missed.
He went against scouts on the following players:
Jacob Rogers - Picked him because his Dad was a coach.
Barbie Carpenter - Picked him because his Dad was a player.
Julius Jones - Picked him because Maurice Carthon said he was just as good as Stephen Jackson.
FYI - The player Jimmy wanted was LB James Francis.

2003 draft Newman
The night before the 2003 draft, scouts and personnel people wanted the team to draft Terence Newman, the cornerback from Kansas State, if he was available.
Parcells preferred Oklahoma State defensive tackle Kevin Williams.
Owner/general manager Jerry Jones took Parcells out to dinner and convinced him Newman was the better choice. The next day, Dallas selected Newman as the No. 5 pick in the first round, and he's started every game since.
"It's been off and on," said Larry Lacewell, the Cowboys' retired scouting director, who worked with Parcells in his first two seasons in Dallas. "Under Parcells, it was him. Before, it was scouts and whoever. ... We got Jerry and Stephen [Jones] to take him out and made him mad and told him we're going to take Newman."
Coaches wanting one player and scouts wanting another is a common occurrence in NFL draft rooms.

Parcells had his fair share of draft gaffes, no doubt about it.
However, Kevin Williams over Newman was the right call. Williams has tailed off later in his career, but he was a terror early on.
Newman has been solid, but personally I don't think he's ever been anything special. I know there will be people that disagree with that, but Williams was a 5x All Pro, 6x Pro Bowler and part of the All Decade team. Newman has never been an All Pro and only made the Pro Bowl twice.
Beyond that, I'll never understand the desire from some Cowboys fans to totally discredit Parcells any chance they get. He literally turned this franchise around. I guess if you like 5-11 seasons, then discrediting Parcells time in Dallas is probably a worthwhile exercise. Otherwise, it just seems silly.

It comes down quite often to how good your staff is. Clearly Bellicek has not been able to build a staff as good as his first group. And remember that he failed as coach of the Browns before he became coach of the Pats.
