View Full Version : Gold Rush, who's been watching?

I loved this show last year. I was pretty pissed when that guy screwed over the Hoffman's and basically swindled the claim out from underneath them.
"I've had a standing offer to buy the Porcupine claim for years."
Really *******? So you waited until someone dug out a full season's worth of dirt for you to go buy it? Granted, the Hoffman's screwed up and missed a lease payment, but that's some ******** right there. You go behind their back and buy it out from under them just as the new gold mining season is starting?
Oh, sucks to be you now. House is flooding, equipment broke down left and right, and you might lose your life's savings.
Karma. She has a mean streak. Reap the whirlwind.

Yeah, I've been watching.
The shows been just about the same disaster it was last year.
Nobody has anything to really speak of.
Fred has to be the biggest idiot I have ever seen. He spent a good 7 weeks tearing down an entire plant that he could have ran from day 1 and produced gold with.
It's amazing how foolish he was. He didn't even have his equipment at that time. Why not run what you can, have some of the help prepare a new area to work with and set up the equipment when it comes.
Literally, he wasted 7 weeks of nearly guaranteed gold. Entirely stupid. I did think it was funny one of the pieces of equipment broke down. I wonder if that thing was one of the pieces the Hoffmans sold to him. That'd be too perfect if it was.
The Hoffmans are nearly as stupid this year as they were last year. Just no clue what they are doing.

From what I can remember, all of his heavy equipment is what he bought from the Hoffmans. First the front end loader goes down. I didn't see what happened with it, but they had the front right wheel assembly off. Then the bucket excavator crapped out and won't start at the end of the re-run I just saw. The preview for Friday's episode showed Fred at home surveying the damage the flood did to his house. Total disaster.
The Hoffman's might have found decent gold on their new place judging by the test cores, but hard to say how much or how deep the gravel goes that contains it. For such a cluster**** of a bunch, I want to see them succeed.
The Fates are not kind to Fred. I was honestly pissed off to the point I had to tell myself to calm down when I saw that episode where he kicked the Hoffman's off the Porcupine. If he tried to pull something like that with someone else that wasn't being filmed, they might find his body face down in a river after his truck "slid" off the road.

Such a great show, but it is literally one disaster after another. If there was ever a show that made you NOT want to have anything to do with a certain line of work, it's this one. Jeez.
I think the focus on Fred being the bad guy takes away some of the focus on just how TERRIBLE Todd is as a leader. That guy has done NOTHING right. I mean, just now deciding to do a test drill? Spending 5 days and thousands of dollars leveling ground and digging through permafrost on land that was already mined?
And then add all that to last year's disaster?

If they are getting paid by Discovery, I can't imagine it's enough to cancel out their $1000 a day loss.
Plus, either they're really good actors or they're broke. The tension that all of them are showing strikes me as real.

That's what I was thinking as well, why not run it til the other one gets set up, I cant see any reason why it had to be located in the same space.
Everyone on the whole show does so many stupid things, I cant help but think its staged. My dad and I were watching them clear that field and we both said, why dont they get a drilling rig and do a bunch of test bores to see if they are in a good spot and we know nothing about digging for gold. Lo and behold, after they waste a bunch of time and money clearing land that had already been mined, they conclude they should do test borings.
Aggravating to watch the stupidity, yet I can't change the channel.....

I have only watched a couple of episodes. One of them was where the one old guy bought the land the others had found gold on. I have to say I got the feeling that discovery channel or the producers had a hand in that decision to create some extra drama.
Like I said I have only seen a couple of episodes but man alive those guys seem like a bunch of idiots. It is like they have no plan at all and then complain about losing money to which the old saying a fool and his money are soon parted kept coming to my mind.

That Hoffman bunch are hilarious, a bunch of morons, but they're pretty funny. They look like a dog in a new yard, just digging holes for the heck of it. I don't blame Fred at all, the Hoffmans messed up and are unorganized. I'm sure the producers are editing to make Fred seem more like the villain, when the truth is the Hoffman bunch are just incompetent.

I'm getting a little annoyed with relatively nothing happening in each episode.
Honestly, the first episode had as much action as the entire rest of the season so far.
Last night was an hour dedicated to watching a guy chase tail and build a filter, watching Fred start his loader and watching the kid build a road that he hasn't finished.

If you go to the discovery message board (yeah, I didn't know there was one either), they is some posters who claim to know the Hoffman's and they have money. This whole broke bit with them is for TV. At least that is what some on there are claiming.
Now the other guys, they might be broke, but not the Hoffman's.
I would agree though, it is a good watch on TV - but it's always "the gold is right there, just gotta dig that dirt and get it". Rinse and Repeat in the next episode.

you'd think with 3 "shows" inside a show they could come up with something a little more original. but yea, the constant WITH ONE THIRD OF THE MINING SEASON GONE....
and only the kid has found gold. this better pick up soon or i may have to actually watch ariel learn to fly in alaska.

I'm nearly convinced that none of the camps find anything.
Maybe a little bit but with how little they put into each episode, I think there's really only two scenarios that play out.
1. All the camps get up and running and the produces have been wanting to stretch out the season a bit so they basically scrape the bottom of the barrel to make enough shows until gold starts coming in.
2. Nobody finds really anything and this is all they have to work with. It's sad, they could have combined the last two shows and made a good episode but they keep showing a bunch of nothing. I don't know how many times I have have to hear the same guy on the Hoffman's talk about how he wants the gold now and he has "gold fever".
Just put a show together for ****s sake.

I'm not sure the Hoffmans were ever portrayed as broke. They do own an airport and did raise a quarter of a million bucks to do this little mining operation.
I do believe they feel pressure to get some return on their investment and to not have a bunch of guys not make a dime working for them.

I caught that last night too. Had he been a bit older and wiser he could have popped off with the fact that gold is traded on the world markets and working your *** off 16 hours a day when it's $1619 a ounce (just checked) means you put in whatever hours you can before the price declines.
He sure could've immediately agreed with her, packed up, and moved back home to flip burgers for minimum. I'm guessing though that Dad got involved and mentioned that Parker might, just might, be making his entire college tuition on his own accord.
I'm wondering why multiple operations get shut down in the next episode. Both Richard Head Dakota Fred and Parker say they get shut down. Fred, well, he deserves it.

The kid's young. I get the impression he was playing up "cool" for the cameras and his mom didn't want any part of that.
She's a mom and he needs to learn the art of maternal diplomacy.
I usually catch the show on demand after the fact but it took forever to get it up.
Good to see them catching gold.
Can't believe the Hoffmans were shooting for 100 ounces and now they might pull in 300+
That's crazy.
And again, I've never seen so many things go wrong. Brokem equipment every episode.

Oh yeah, they're not letting them film them for nothing. Of course there could be a pay structure where if they don't find any gold, they'll be payed X amount for the season and anything over X amount they'll just be payed in what they make in gold + a little extra. Like on Storage Wars, one guy is holding out for a better contract. I'm pretty every person on a reality show gets payed. Usually it's not really THAT much. Sometimes a couple grand an episode.

Latest episode might be one of the best.
The smelting process was pretty awesome.
That Russian guy is set. 2 - 4 oz / hr?
Thats ridiculous. Like 100K per day cause he runs 23 hours per day.
He looks so perfect for the role too. Looks like Tom Hanks did at the end of his stay on that island on Cast Away.
Pretty cool he said he'd let Parker come up and basically train under him and get experience with all the equipment next season.
I think it'd be hard to turn down an offer like that. See a dude who pulls in millions per season and see how he does it.
And once again, the Hoffman's look like the biggest group of clowns on the Earth. The one dude runs the diesel dry and then decides to pack up and leave.
Their whole season has been a complete disaster. What do they do when they aren't running, just thumb their butts? I mean, Mr. Mustache goes over to the spot they've been working and had just ASSUMED was out of gold and pans out what looks like the best soil of their season. It seems like you'd find gold, run that dirt and test pan until you get no more gold.
I swear, they've got to be the most clueless group of people on Earth.
Their 24HR maraton run they did a few weeks back was a disaster. They essentially flushed gold right down the drain by have dirt back up their machinery.
From the very first moment I saw that they had dirt packing up their gold traps I thought to myself, "Why don't they dig a big *** hole right below where their water comes off the machine". They essentially would have created a pseudo-glory hole and could have ran the dirt from their homemade pit at the end of the season and recovered all the gold they had lost.
They're clueless. I've never seen a group of guys with so little foresight in my life. They literally have no discussions that pertain to addressing problems they could have down the road and just wait until those problems hit. The smartest guy they have out there is the dude that owns the quarry and it must be hell working with a collection of guys who have zero ability to think ahead.
Dakota Fred is only moderately better. They had an episode where their entire setup was screwed up because they had rocks build up at the end of their contraption. Didn't think of what was going to happen to a couple hundred thousand tons of rocks?
Here's an idea, you know that hole you filled in at the beginning of the season? The big one that the Hoffman's dug last year and were getting gold out of? Aside from the fact that you should have used their equipment as best you could while waiting those 40+ days for your own stuff arrive........how about instead of filling that hole in your just have your big rock sifter dump right into that hole?

I liked last season, because they used the phrase "glory-hole" a lot more, and it sure made for some funny segments on The Soup... I like Gold Rush, but I still might not know the show exists, if not for The Soup poking fun at it...
I think the arrival of the MSHA at two of the mining sites gives a good representation of the fact that there's way too much regulation on part of the federal government, and it's helping to kill our economy and the small business man... Dakota Fred was also quick to recognize this, as was 17yo Parker... Now if only more people in Washington were paying attention to Gold Rush... Ron Paul in 2012!

Can't believe they asked that one guy to come back after ditching.
Wouldn't shock me if it was more of a vacation or personal family matter get away than any sort of quitting.

i just don't care anymore.
i'm tired of "if this sparrow doesn't fly 3 more feet, the season could be over!"
way over dramatized.

True. It's pretty obvious they're (the producers) trying REALLY hard in this season. I've found myself less enthused to watch it at all. Waiting on Deadliest Catch and the new season of Dual Survival.

Yeah, the whole weekly buildup is just stupid. I would prefer they just let things play out as they may and record it for good or bad.
The Hoffmans would be screwed without that one dude. I can't remember his name but he owns his own quarry or whatever. Every time they have an issue, he's the guy with the answer.
Dakota Fred is probably one of the biggest idiots on Earth. He's constantly comparing his haul to the Hoffman's but this is the same guy who filled in their pit just for the hell out of it, wasting nearly 7 weeks in the process when he could have been getting at least some gold.
I noticed when he went over 50 oz, the scale he was using was rated for 3 lbs max capacity.
Wouldn't shock me if he actually had more and has no clue that his little scale is maxed out and likely reading the additional weight incorrectly.
I honestly wish the kid was given more air time. He's just about the only one at this point that's worth watching because when he has a problem it's a legit problem.
Blown hose, generator or hell a family emergency.
When the Hoffmans have a problem like running out of water, their entire operation shuts down when they could easily move dirt from their "cuts" and stockpile it right next to the wash plant.
I still can't believe they only work 8 hours days. You have 3 months to get in all the work you can and you put in 8 hour days? Seems to me 12 hours would be the bare minimum and any person with some real drive would only stop if it was dark. They only have 2 real machines to operate. Take shifts and keep that site going.
I'm almost certain I could ran that crew to a greater amount of Gold than the Hoffman son did. How do they have water problems so frequently? I realize they can't take from the stream but dig a deep *** hole right next to the stream and syphon from it. I'm sure you can't go within so many feet so just mark the closest spot and dig straight down. You could dig 3 or 4 of those holes and rotate them.
I'm kind of jacked that I might get to go pan for gold this summer if I make it back home. One of the relatives on my mom's side has about 400 yards along a creek/river in the mountains. Doubtful I'll be able to get anything more than a speck or two but the experience should be pretty fun.

did you see this weeks episode? spoiler if not
they are letting the stream run into cut 1 and get water from that.
also I believe there is probably still gold in cut 1 and i think they are pumping gold into the wash plant and getting extra gold they think is coming from cut 2 but what do I know? lol

I'v seen parts of it. I think they are just letting water come up or through the walls of the hole which probably is okay to do.
That was why I talked about it. They've been draining that big pit cause they have to work in it but nobody ever thought, "hey, maybe we could make a smaller but deeper hole for the purposes of producing fresh water".

they dug a way for the stream to run into cut 1 and are pumping water from cut 1 over the stream to the water pit

The old man is hilarious.
They dig down 50 something feet at this prized location they've talked about for years and they determine they might need 100K to get down that far in that area.
Parker's dad says it's too big of a risk but his grandpa says, "Well, I don't care about the money caust I can't take it with me so I might as well spend it while I'm here".

the grandfather is my favorite character.
i tivo it now and just fly past dakota dumbarse. he filled in the hole and now he's digging it back out going for his own glory hole in about the same spot all the while laughing at fred.
take him off the show, quit "making drama out of nothing at all" and just see what they can do.

I was a little shocked at how little cut the guys actually get.
Well, at least Fred's son anyway.
The Hoffmans gave 5 oz per crew member to put them at 68 oz left over.
I'm pretty sure they had to give away 10% to the land owner, so that puts them at about 58 oz.
If operating costs ate 50 oz, the Hoffmans actually took less then their help.
Fred's son worked all season as the primary helper and only took 8 oz home?
Sorry but out of 80 possible oz, that's pretty low to pay the only guy who worked with you the whole summer.
He should have probably gotten 15 or so.
