A Pilgrimage... to New York City

The muslims think it their duty once in their lives to go on a "haj" to mecca. I'll be going on a "haj" of my own,so to speak,later this week. I think instead of a "haj",I'll call it a "grudge". I will be going to Ground Zero to pay my respects,as I feel every American should,if they can,some time in their life. It will be my first trip to NYC,and I will have three days there to see what the city offers. Any tips on places to go? Food to eat? Thanks in advance.

I was in NY last year for Vacation. I flew into Newark airport had an easy drive to Staten Island where I stayed and took the Staten Island ferry into Manhattan each day so I could avoid driving in the city where parking is impossible.

Go on Groupon,New York City version,and they have access to Delta's Sky Club being offered today. It's discounted a lot,but you could probably watch the game there,in comfort, with good drinks......That is supposing you are going out of JFK!

The general things: Rockefeller Center for the tree, Saks 5th ave windows across the street (get some candied peanuts from the street vendors there - they are so delicious!)

If you can hit the Museum of Natural History, I always think that's worth the trip. The Intrepid Sea/Air/Space museum on the West Side Highway is great, also.

Empire State Building can be a bit of a wait, but the view is spectacular and really something to see if you don't get there often.

There are always nice options to eat in the city. You might want to look over http://www.urbanspoon.com/c/3/New-York-restaurants.html for the area you're staying in.

Been there twice, ground zero is an emotional place......as for food, I like it all, so many different things you cant go wrong

In April 2006 I got to go to the NFL Draft with Juke99. He informed me that you need to try a knish, NYC pizza, don't wear Red Sox gear, and don't look people in the eye for too long.

I loved NYC.

The best though was my train ticket getting ruined by a spilled beer. It didn't stop me from showing it to the Conductor. I thought Juke was going to die of embarrassment.

I highly recommend him as a NYC tour guide. :D

Absolutely not. I've always found eye contact to be useful, no matter where I am.

I've lived in and around NY for my entire life, and I have family in Texas. The only difference I notice really is the pace of life is slower elsewhere and people have more patience. Everyone's not in as much of a hurry.

To be honest, I probably enjoy the pace down in Texas (and elsewhere) more than I do NYC.

Too bad Zuccotti park got cleaned up, it's right by Ground Zero. You could have visited the OWS people and maybe camped there for cheap. :p:

I lived in North Brooklyn and worked in downtown Manhattan. You could try feeding that grudge at Bangal Curry, it's pretty close to ground zero. Alfanoose and Ruchi are pretty good too. :shades:

Where you go depends on what you like. If you're a proud American, don't forget to take a boat trip to Liberty Island. (Statue of Liberty) Walk down Wall St and get a pic in front of the NY Stock Exchange. It's not far from WTC so you can do that at the same time.

From there just head south down Broadway to the Bull and then into Battery Park. From there you can catch the boat to Liberty Island. Get the tickets at the Castle Clinton in the park.

As for Redsox gear, after Yankees and Mets, that is the most seen baseball garb. People don't care except on game day. You see garb from all teams. If you see Texas Rangers garb, it migt be me!

Oh, and people in general (in Manhattan anyway) are nicer than they are in Dallas.

Museum of Natural History is worth it, mostly just the dinosaur floor though, the stuffed animals and Indian floors are not anything different from other museums.

I was there in the summer and didn't do the Empire State Building, I went up the Rockefeller and the views were pretty decent even though it was a cloudy day.

Gotta go to the Statue of Liberty too
