I agree.
If Jerry & Jason want this team to accel, they need to put Dez on a special training program that forces him to learn more than 3-4 routes. If he doesnt want to put the extra time and effort into learning more, bench him until he knows he HAS to learn more.

Yet when Dallas needs a big first down late in games it was and usually is Dez that has been stepping up and making big plays.

that "clutch" catch was set up by his 3 dropped sitters earlier in the game

I agree. I would also say Dez is still a work in progress. No doubt the kid has talent but he is at the start of his career there is still much to work on and improve on. I have no doubt he can become better.

Based on that touchdown pass, Dez must obviously have 4 routes that he runs as opposed to the 3 Peterson was talking about...

Funny cuz Dez scored a TD on him right after he said that.

I would still take Peterson over our supposed shutdown corner.

Anyone care to opine on the coverage Peterson had on the TD?
He just stood there and jogged on the break.

He (Peterson) got caught staring into the backfield. If you notice, runs a stutter to sell the handoff, Romo also hides the ball as he spins around. As soon as Peterson bit, Dez took off and created the seperation and grabbed the pass. Just good execution by Romo/Dez and a lapse of awareness by Peterson.

How do you feel about Randy Moss or Larry Fitzgerald?

Yes because Randy Moss ran the entire route tree.
People need to realize Dez is one of the more athletic players we've seen in the NFL in recent memory. He doesn't need anything more than an average route runner to be a great reciever.

For the most part Peterson did a great job on Dez. He's obviously an incredibly talent CB. But there were a few key plays where Dez got the better of Peterson and they were big for Dallas.

That's interesting....
How about when Dez starts dominating games the way Randy Moss did in his early years THEN we'll absolve him from any responsibility to improve himself.
Until then, we're still waiting on Dez to notch his second 100-yard game of his career (1 in 23 games). Moss had already tallied 11 by the time his second NFL season ended.
Cue the "but he was injured, didn't have training camp...." excuses.
BTW, I think Dez is trying to improve, but this notion of "all he needs to know is three routes..." is bunk.

That was a good battle for sure. Like Hostile said, I'd pay money to watch them go at it.

I think the reason why Peterson did well against Dez was because he knew what route he would run. There's no unpredictability and that can cause problems for your receiver and quarterback.

if he can just hang on to the ball, I think he can become a great WR.

I was wondering if Dez had a 100 yard game yet. When did he get his first 100 yard game?

Last year against the Giants in New York.

So, you think Garrett and Romo called plays that required Dez to run the same route over and over throughout the game?

Many on plays where Romo has to scramble around buying time and digressing everything to sandlot ball because Dez didn't get open on his route. Dez is awesome at sandlot ball, but its only going to take him and the Cowboys so far. At the end of the day we're going to need a hugely talented WR who runs precise routes that the QB can depend on to be where he's supposed to be when he plants his back leg and fires coming out of his drop.

Randy Moss in his prime got seven yards of separation on a 9 route in a one on one situation (which was hardly ever).
Dez was getting zero seperation against Peterson on his 9 route, on multiple attempts. Dez is hugely talented running after the catch and coming down with the jump ball, but he doesn't have Randy Moss speed and he can't get by with Randy Moss effort.

Those guys actually dominate games. They even did it in their rookie years.
In Dez's sophomore year he has still not yet dominated a single game this year. He actually had two better games in his first year against the Giants than any game he has had this year.
That's the thing that worries me about Dez - lack of progression in his game.
He is not good enough to dominate a game on pure athleticism like Randy Moss could.
Right now I see him topping out as a good #2 guy. That actually isn't all that bad for a late first rounder. Luckily he doesn't have to be a #1 with Miles Austin here (so long as Austin can keep his hammy from crumping on him).

You could tell the way Peterson played him that he had zero fear of Dez getting deep on him. You could also tell that his lack of fear was justified. Dez met himself a better sandlot player and could not dominate.
Conversely on his TD play you could see he played smart football for a change. He faked the block and then ran a crisp slant to the open middle of the field.

Do you know why Moss didnt need to be a great route runner? Speed....For a Wr to be that big and fast was a nightmare for DC's
Dez doesnt scare DC's that way.....Dez is athletic....but he doesnt have great speed. Cb's are going to man up on him and dare him to go deep.
What Dez needs to do is get better at running precise routes...and run diiferent types of routes well.
Sure Dez can out jump a Cb for a ball....use his athletic ability to make some great catches....but if you cant get seperation in this league....you will never be a great WR
Dez needs to improve his route running to get seperation........he is no Randy Moss that relied on speed

Great point! No one will ever be totally pleased with the man. Even though he set up the win over a few teams this year.
