View Full Version : Howards End????

The Oakland Raiders have apparently entered the Darren Howard sweepstakes (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/3487378), offering New Orleans either CB Charles Woodson or CB Philip Buchanon for him.

This seems unrealistic for both teams. Oakland is clearly looking for a salary dump, especially if they can get out from under Woodson’s $10 million cap hit. New Orleans, on the other hand is also looking to get out from under Howard’s deal so it can re-sign its own players. What the Saints want is draft picks. And the Raiders are short, already having shipped the 7th overall pick to Minnesota for Randy Moss. It doesn’t seem likely that Oakland would send its number two to the Saints.

The Howard scenario is being set in concrete, at least from Dallas’ perspective. It will happen after the draft, it appears, or it won’t happen at all. (You know this is more likely because New Orleans’ latest posture is saying they will trade Howard before the draft or they will keep him, which, as we have discussed in earlier posts, is a dumb long-term move for the team.)

With a Howard deal seeming more remote, to whom do you look for a rush, and with which pick? Shawne Merriman? Derrick Johnson? Dan Cody? Erasmus James? Demarcus Ware? David Pollack? Matt Roth? Someone else? (Show your work, it will be graded.)

Update: Saints higher-ups seem awfully eager to discuss a possible Howard deal with the Dallas press. Yesterday, GM Mickey Loomis told the Star-Telegram that Jerry was giving him the cold shoulder. Today, coach Jim Haslett tells the Star-Telegram that Dallas and the Saints have never (http://www.dfw.com/mld/dfw/sports/football/11218177.htm) had a serious discussion about compensation for Howard. He also repeated Loomis’ threat that Howard would not be traded after the draft.

Two teams are playing poker. Jerry Jones is not saying a word. The other team is lobbying hard to the Cowboys fan base.

Who’s got the better hand here?

Jerry just waiting for the flop (Shawne Merriman at 11) the turn (David Pollack at 20) and the River ( Justin Tuck at 42) before he deals with the Aints

Jerry has the best hand at the table.......he's got Parcells. Parcells won't blink. Jerry won't make any moves without Parcells blessing.

If Parcells wasn't involved, this deal would have been done. Parcells got 2 1st Rd. picks for Keyshawn (I think that was the compensation) from Tampa Bay. He's been through these kind of deals and he always seems to come out on the winning side. Rarely does Parcells ever give up too much or take too little in trades.

Without Parcells JJ would have made this trade - I 100% AGREE!

Trust me the Saints front office won't blink either. They have 5 teams other than the Cowboys and the Raiders that are or have had serious contact about Howard. Howard's market is there, and they will get what they feel is market value.

Sure does - If we give up a #1 for Howard at his demands of a $16M SB and a $35M Deal. We are loco.

No worries, that's not going to happen, at least not the #1. I can see Dallas giving up a 2nd round pick, or moving down with one of their #1's.

But on the money side, a Darren Howard, with his resume, is going to demand a lot of money. There just happens to be a shortage of playmaking defensive ends in this league, so it's supply and demand.

Anyone ever thought if we didn't trade for Howard this yr and he posts a 15 sack yr like Berry in AZ...what would be the reaction on this board? "That stupid...!*%$* JJ and Parcelll, could have had him for Dat and 2nd. Instead, we picked _____(fill in the player's name) in the 2nd and he's done Jack Squat and look completely lost."

It'll be funny. It's nice to Monday morning quarterback.

In Mick's mail today, Mickey made an interesting comment. He made reference to the fact that with all we've heard of Howard, we have heard virtually nothing from the Cowboys about it. It does sort of give off the feeling that Dallas may not be nearly as interested as the media continues to make them out to be.

Actually, I still can't shake this feeling that Dallas' two main targets in the draft are Merriman and Spears. Either one could likely make Howard unnecessary.

And think of the potential savings by making this type move. Young and cheap can be better than old and expensive. Lets draft for the future if it is all possible.

so what exactly is a non-serious trade conversation?

Haslett: So what will you give in exchange for Howard?
Parcells: That's up to JJ
JJ: Uh.wel...uh..ah 3 dallas cheerleaders. *giggles like a schoolgirl*
Parcells: Please feel free to slap yourself for that comment Jerry.
JJ: Well..ah...uh..umm...Dat... ah...Nguyen is uh...ah not...
Parcells impatiently: NOT AVAILABLE.
Haslett: so... uh whats the deal?
Parcells: a 2nd rounder. Just kidding.

This is my guess as to a non-serious trade conversation. lol

I don't think the money is an issue. The Cowboys brain trust has talked to his agent and know his demands; they seem to have a plan for his salary and SB and fitting it into the cap. So the hold up is the Saints trying to get more than anyone is willing to give for him.

BTW from what I''ve read his $16 mil does not have to be all in SB money. Part of it will be in roster bonuses and various incentives so the $16 mil is an inflated number to make it look like a bigger deal than it is.
