is there some quick and easy method for figuring point values for different picks in each round? trying to calculate which teams might be willing to trade up depending on who is available, and what we might get in return for the #11 or #20. is this info available anywhere, and could someone maybe post a link or just give a rough sketch...?
thanks in advance! i'm interested to see what that 11 is worth...

There are numerous 'draft pick value' charts available on the web (do a google search for variations of 'draft pick value chart'). Take them with a grain of salt. More pecisely, understand that the differences in those charts is reflective of the fact that most teams have slightly different charts, so it's not as simple as saying pick X is worth the same as picks Y+Z.

The chart became public knowlede when Jimmy Johnson showed (part of ) the one he used in Dallas during the draft a few years ago. There's at least one story out there that claims Dallas originated the chart. Jimmy Johnson's story contradicts that however. According to Johnson, the original chart was created at MIT and distributed to NFL teams.

NONE of the charts out there on the web match the portion of the chart Jimmy Johnson displayed. Bear in mind that the original chart was for a 30 team draft, so everyone has modified there's at least twice as the league expanded.

I did extensive research into the chart before any versions appeared on the web. Karl Pfaff (the waterboy of Seahawks.net) provided me with a tape of the draft where Johnson showed the chart (incidentally, the tape proves that Dallas didn't 'pass' when they traded down to select Roy Williams, despite the prevailing media articles that say so)

I'll post the numbers from the chart I recreated from Jimmy Johnson's, corraborated with chart excerpts from Bob Cook (KC scouting director), but iI don't think it will format well here.

For future picks, the value is computed as the middle value of a pick one round lower. i.e next years first rounder is worth 440-460 points, the middle value of a 2nd rounder this year.

i'll do some quick tabulations and see what scenarios i can see. it would be really nice to see which teams have a lot of pics - they are the ones more likely to package something to move up. then, by those teams' needs, figuring which player they might target and what they might give up to get that player. i appreciate the help.
